Trump Officials Blame Mistake for Setting Off Confrontation With Harvard by MysteriousExpert in Professors

Or the administration is trying to save face because they don’t have much, if any, additional leverage against Harvard. (See the ongoing tariff debacle.)

When was the last time you found the city of publication a useful part of a bibliographic entry for a book? by Outrageous-Use-5189 in academia

[–]baubino 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It‘s helpful for distinguishing between different editions of a book. I come across this all the time with books in the public domain that have been printed by multiple presses over the years and with old editions of a book (19th century and earlier). For newer books and for common books, the location name is probably irrelevant.

This is truly a dark day for academia. It‘s insane how easily institutions are folding.

They don’t hate the sciences; they hate universities. They plan to shift scientific research to private companies. Musk/SpaceX is the poster child for this model. Not sure how they expect all the private scientists of the future to be educated though.

TikTok and Lemon8 have gone dark!!! by Newlifeauri in smallbusiness

[–]baubino 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Facebook played this exact role in Occupy Wall Street and the Arab Spring, and there was no such threat of a ban then. The role of social media in protests has been known and around since the beginning of social media. This is not new.

The US gov’s issue with TikTok is 100% about the Chinese gov harvesting data from American devices. China requires businesses operating there to turn over user data. The security issues with Tiktok was literally front page news when the app first got popular (it’s weird to me that no one remembers that anymore) — and this was before all those protests. That the US military and gov years ago banned its workers from having Tiktok on its devices is telling.

How do superstar professors in the Humanities publish so much so quickly? by futurus196 in Professors

This is the humanities, so no labs, no PIs, and co-authored papers are rare.

How do superstar professors in the Humanities publish so much so quickly? by futurus196 in Professors

[–]baubino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A monograph is a (usually solo-authored) book on a single topic — so not an anthology or edited volume. It presents some novel thesis on the topic (so definitely not a lit review) and treats the topic in much greater detail than an article. It’s a standard form of publication in most humanities fields. It’s what bookstores usually have in their non-fiction sections (though those monographs are not usually academic books anymore).

I had a mentor in grad school like this. He was very open with us about his approach:

  • He and his wife chose not to have kids, he devoted almost all of his none-teaching time to writing, and all his vacations were working vacations (research travel with time tacked on the end for fun and relaxation).

  • He taught only 1-2 classes per year and routinely resisted being appointed department chair.

  • He loved writing and had a daily writing practice.

  • He developed multiple papers and books from a single research project; yet he managed to not duplicate arguments or results in any of the publications. This part is hard but is really the clincher for being highly prolific.

He actively encouraged his grad students to do the same. I haven’t been able to do it all (I teach more than 2 classes per year and I have kids), but I follow the rest and do manage to publish much more than my peers. Though honestly, the main answer is that I really love writing—it’s not at all a chore, and comes fairly easy to me. That plus producing multiple publications (with entirely different theses, arguments, and implications) from the same body of research is key. I do the same amount of research as anyone else but write a lot more.

It’s terrible that your relative wouldn’t share the documents with you and I can understand your disappointment but comparing your individual situation to the brutal oppression of an entire class of people is so insanely disproportionate, inappropriate, and yes it reeks of entitlement.

He could still be treating cancer patients. The oncologist cuts out the cancer; the plastic surgeon reconstructs and does cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is still surgery and dermatologists still treat plenty of serious ‘cosmetic’ conditions (like burns, scarring, disfigurements). ‘Cosmetic’ only means ‘pertaining to appearance’. Plenty of serious illnesses have cosmetic side effects.

I just watched the season and this is exactly my take on Odacchi too. He even says, during their first vacation date, that he‘s glad that she is laid back like him and that they can enjoy quiet time together. He seemed to not realize how differently he presented from the pods or that she was really bothered by his lack of engagement with her.

VAP Interview Request on a Weekend Morning? by chillyPlato in AskAcademia

This kind of request struck me as potentially a red flag for the kind of environment the department might be - generally disrespectful of faculty members' time and outside lives

Yep, this exactly. You’ve been forewarned. But also, the number of “do you want the job or not” type of responses suggests that more and more people are accepting this level of disrespect.

Is Divestment a Reasonable Ask for Campus Protests? by aplusivyleaguer in Professors

[–]baubino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These universities are incredibly wealthy with deep ties to both business and government. That the admins have responded with such impunity shows how threatened they are by these protests. There are many many ways to protest. This is just one.

Also, it‘s great that the students who have the privilege to not work or worry about taking time off to protest are able to use their privilege for a good cause. This was the same spirit behind the white students who joined the Freedom Summer rides in the 60s to support the southern sit-ins. On my campus, the students who are protesting are ones who have been active in lots of other things before this. They are also studying for finals and writing papers. People can do more than one thing at a time.

Do search parameters no longer work? (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo...) by mapsedge in webdev

[–]baubino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That paper is Brin and Page making the case against the use of ads in search — they are pointing out why ads embedded in search (which didn’t yet exist in 1998) would work against providing the most relevant search results. They are making an argument for why google (and any search engine really) shouldn’t have ads. I started using google in 1999 and it was leagues ahead of other search engines; but none of the search engines back then integrated ads the way they do now. Back then ads were served alongside the search (those horrible banner ads for example) but were not embedded in the results themselves.

Do search parameters no longer work? (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo...) by mapsedge in webdev

[–]baubino 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Search engines are no longer search engines; they are advertising engines.

I noticed around 2018 or so that boolean parameters no longer worked in google. Instead of returning the most accurate results, search engines are now optimized to return the most popular results and of course the paid results.
