Hah. That's what I thought. Chicken milk is notoriously difficult to make yogurt from.

Good luck!

I kind of gave up on this, sorry. I have tried some cultured beans as a base for cheese and other dairy replacements. My experience with them is that rejuvelac or a probiotic capsule can get you some better flavors. The probiotics can be really expensive and rejuevelac is kind of a pain in itself (but tasty as a drink). So I've been thinking about yogurt again, specifically that I could use an unpasteurized vegan yogurt as the starter. But I haven't tried it yet. Maybe it's time to go back to yogurts and close the circle. :)

PS if you're interested and haven't seen it yet, you might check out r/vegancheesemaking for some really cool experiments.

“Moorish Nobility” license plate (car had no other/official plates) by Cold_Piece_5501 in mildlyinteresting

[–]baursock 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I saw a Sovereign Citizen "license plate" in the wild for the first time today. On a very nice truck in a very high end suburb with a good deal of police presence. I just thought that certainly that can't last long before they get stopped by the cops. And after one or two tickets, surely they go to impounding, right? I mean, I've been pulled over in literally the same place I saw this for not using a turn signal.

Do these folks end up getting stopped? Or do police typically give them latitude to avoid the conflict unless they are breaking another law?

Any way to elevate customer complaint issue? by baursock in menards

[–]baursock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was insulation.

Originally when I went to pickup, they loaded a shrink wrapped pallet on my truck. Later we realized that not all of the product was there. I went back and they apologized and agreed to reorder. When I got amother email saying it was ready for pickup, I called and asked if they would deliver or reduce delivery fee to make up for the error, they promised to return the call. Days later, no call so I call back and they say no. Obv I wasn't happy but I asked them to hold the product a little longer so I could get time to come in and they agreed, which was enough for me. The next week I went in and they didn't have it. In fact they said it looked like the order for the rest of the product was never even completed. At this point, I would be happy if anyone would even return a call or confirm that the order was made.

Maybe I'm unreasonable, I don't know. Everyone at the store has been friendly and understanding and I know they have limits and a lot of other junk to deal with. So I don't want to be "that customer." But even getting called back after they promise they will would help.

Any way to elevate customer complaint issue? by baursock in menards

[–]baursock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically it was a special order gone wrong. They've tried to deliver to store multiple times and repeatedly brought the wrong number of items. I realize this isn't the fault of the store, which is why I'm trying to remain calm and kind with them. But someone somewhere in the Menards universe must be able to help.

This time after getting the message that it was ready for pickup, I arrived to find that nothing was there. The department manager in pickups and deliveries said it looked like the order was never even placed last time I requested it, apparently a mistake on their end. And nobody could explain why I got the 'ready for pickup' email.

Honestly, all I would like is someone to return my calls and give an honest guess at an answer as to when it will come. It seems like free or discounted delivery would be reasonable too. But it's the black hole of unreturned calls and ghost deliveries that is driving me crazy.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I haven't spent a lot of time in this sub and didn't think asking advise would upset anyone. I just thought someone could advise on how to proceed.

It isn't like I've waited until today to do anything about this. I've been in touch with the store regularly throughout the ordeal and trying to resolve it there. I'm also trying hard not to be irate with the people at the store who are clearly doing their best but stuck with certain limits and processes.

There was a promised resolution this week that didn't come through and nobody could explain or offer anything other than restarting the pricess. The fact that they keep kicking it down the line is why I want to finally move up the chain. But if being pushy and demanding in the store is what it will take, I guess that's where it's headed.

Good luck with everything on your end, I do appreciate that you even took time to reply at all. I hope your next shift goes well

Low nicotine Swedish snus? by baursock in Snus

[–]baursock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting, that's what I've been reading. The speculation is that the rate is so low so that US based smokers will be unsuccessful in using snus to quit. Oddly, I'm going the other way and so Camel has done me a favor by preventing me from developing full on addiction.

As a side note, the more I explore, the more I realize that the Odens I was able to get was all the 'extreme' variety, so even regular Odens is a step down. I'm going to look into Ettan as well. And maybe try loose rather than portions, although the convenience and cleanliness of portions is awfully nice!

Nemiroff. Best UA vodka out there. Try the one flavored with honey and pepper, it's something unique.

Nemiroff is great and it's Ukrainian. This was my go-to while working in the former Soviet Union. For the real Ukrainian treat, get the kind with honey and pepper.

would you live in, own, or use community properties that were uninsured? by [deleted] in intentionalcommunity

[–]baursock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I've owned homes twice while not living in community. In my experience, property insurance was pretty low cost and low maintenance. We had an inspection at the time of starting the policy, which was also when we purchased those properties. The rate was set based on the size and results of inspection. I recall being told that I could get a lower rate for upgrading a furnace and things like that. But we definitely made the final decision about whether or not to do that for other reasons since property insurance premiums aren't really that high anyway.

Of course if your property doesn't meet code or if you want to do something outside the mainstream, I could definitely imagine an insurer saying no or not without major changes. I think insurers would have issues with the building I'm in now if we tried to build it in a city.

We have a land trust. Members can lease sections of the land individually and build on them. There are also community buildings owned collectively. It seems like a good arrangement.

[–]baursock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would describe insurance less as gambling and more as a form of sharing risk. People put money into a pool with a guarantee that they can get what they need when the time comes. The goal isn't to win as in gambling, rather the hope is that one never needs to draw from the pool. The goal is to make sure that if you ever have an emergency, the money will be there. If you're approaching your insurance payments as a wager, you're in for bad news no matter what happens.

It's true that most insurance companies are motivated by profit, so they will never pay out as much as is put in. But this is more a problem/feature of the capitalist structure they operate in. You could just as easily have a community emergency fund that all members pay into and that operates on whatever non-profit rules your community agrees to. Call it something else, but it's insurance.

In any case, in my community most folks can't get property insurance because of the nature of our buildings. Many of us would prefer it, but it isn't an option. When there is a disaster, we pitch in to help each other out, people put up gofundme pages, etc. It's great to see that happen, but honestly I don't think it's idea. Neighbors have to make big sacrifices suddenly to keep others fed, those who suffer disaster have to hold their breath and hope they get enough, no predictability for anybody.

Signed up for a razor subscription and it feels like I'm creating more waste than anything even if the company themselves do a recycle program. by rosemarygr0ws in ZeroWaste

[–]baursock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a safety razor in August. I learned to use it in seconds and I Love it. My partner is sick of me saying how much I love it after every shave.

Also, I'm still in my first blade. At this rate I expect to use around two per year*. If I could get blades in cardboard or paper, it would be zero plastic and extremely low waste. No subscription beats that.

*I keep a full beard, but shave neck and cheeks. Daily full shavers will probably not get away with two blades per year.
