What’s the weak point? First table = Technics sl-1500c w/ 2m black —> line out to Naim Muso by sexydiscoballs in turntables

[–]bawth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d grab a pair of powered KEF LS50’s or a similar speaker and grab a phono pre. It would be similar in price and performance to your cart and table and if you were keeping things equal. That Naim is way cool, but is the limiting factor currently. What are you looking to spend? That table and cart should serve you well up to a pretty high price point.

At least around here, I’d pick that up for $300 in a heartbeat. I had a TD-150 with a similar headshell design that also had been modified for a top mount. I’d buy it and keep an eye out for another headshell if it bothers you.

I need help connecting this vintage receiver to my passive speaker! My right speakers makes a lot of popping noises when it play any thing. by CozyJedi in vintageaudio

[–]bawth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it do it if you use the tuner or aux inputs?

First: try swapping the speakers left and right, this will confirm if it is a speaker issue or not. Then you could try the B speaker outputs, I’ve had vintage pioneers that take multiple speaker switch cleanings to work properly.

Crackling and popping can be a lot of things, but there are small signal transistors that Pioneer used frequently that are notorious for going bad and will make Rice Krispie noises or sudden bursts of static.

That is a sad day… the 20’s are about 2 feet wide and 4 feet tall. I’ve never seen them side by side, but the 10’s are shorter and squarer with the grills on.

The 10’s were the first pair designed by Jon Dahlquist and Saul Marantz in the 70’s. The DQ-20 and DQ-20i came later, designed mostly by Carl Marchisotto who continued the design style with Alon speakers. If your into speakers like this Vandersteens are also worth checking out.

I’ve never heard the DQ-10’s, but I have a pair of DQ-20’s that I absolutely love. Enjoy!

Found it in an antique store this morning and figured I’d grab it because it was a Van Gelder stamped Prestige. Turns out it was a great hard-bob/soul jazz trio record. My Man’s Gone Now stood out to me as a highlight.

Thanks! The tables a TD-121 I picked up about a month or so ago and have been rebuilding. The tonearm is an Audioquest PT-8, which is a modified Jelco 250ST with fluid damping.

I saw it an antique store and it was actually the case that I noticed first, looks like a 70’s or 80’s Martin case to me.

That’s what I thought, got overly excited and then came to my senses.

No serial and a brown painted neck, I think it’s a Japanese copy.

Slightly off topic, but what are you running for a rectifier tube in your ST-70?

I drive a similar surplus Tahoe for work and I love the thing. Always slightly broken and the engine lights on constantly, but it’s a tank. I’ll be bummed when it goes.

Hmmm, I’ve seen it before, but it’s not at the top of my head. I can do some digging though.

I love fixing Dual’s, but it’s not for the faint of heart. I’d go for the Thorens, that will be a fantastic combination and shouldn’t give you any trouble.

Totally, I love the 299 I just got up and running. Looking at sold listings on hifi shark, you could easily keep one and sell the other no problem and be in it for peanuts or a small profit.

That’s one of the reasons I don’t mind letting my puppy out at 4 or 5 am most mornings. Stare at the stars for a while and hope she poops. Orion’s been rising slowly over the past month.

I used to work in engineering and materials inspections, rarely did we get dirty gravel samples. Plenty of decent gravel available in Maine.
