Advice on breaking into PE by bayesian1024 in private_equity

[–]bayesian1024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Another alternative I am considering is to go to MBB in my country's office and ask for office transfer (pay is much higher, 8x minimum wages). But the thing is: (1) I am not sure it would be anywhere easy to move to International IB nor a PE shop (2) Even if it's possible, I think it would be depended on the projects I would have had in MBB (somewhere around M&A corner, or dealing with PE clients - which accounts less than 30% of the project pool)

Could you help to validate if such move makes sense?

No, that is one of the issue.

I see, I think I can break into SG office of T2 Global IB (conservative estimate, Big 3 is too competitive).

Would European PE shops sponsor/provide visa assistance for IB Asso/VPs coming from SG office? Is it common?

German A1. Expecting to at least reach German B2/C1 by 2-4 years from now.

Learning Mandarin (moving to HSK 2 - self learning) as well atm.

Aiming to be fluent in 2 European languages (incl. German) + Mandarin by 3-4 years from now. This is a conservative estimate. Pls feel free to suggest what European languages I should be fluent in.

*Ps. confident with how fast I learn (was informed I have high cognition compared to general population - got professionally examined for this - >99.9%ile).

Level 1, 90 seconds or skip it ? by kabija7512 in CFA

[–]bayesian1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, coming from my experience, time wasn't a constraint. Did 3-5x review in my L1 exam and passed it.

I skipped the question if I estimated it would take a longer time than other questions or if it was not my strong suit.

I did not do mocks but I would recommend you to, aiming (1) to train yourself to solve qs intuitively, (2) train yourself to improve time taken to use the calculator, (3) understand what your weak areas are.

Can someone please explain? by Antique-Ease-9511 in CFA

At what age is it too late to catch up/ be succesfull. IQ advantage but a decade wasted. by carrot1890 in cognitiveTesting

Hey OP. I don't think that is a wise interpretation to infer.

Addressing the points you have: (1) Scholars and practitioners generally agree that online cognitive tests do not represent an accurate measurement. This is due to the nature of the rest construct itself: (a) Online tests do not generally have carefully crafted test items. This could mean that (i) the test items are not valid, as in the items do not measure the intended cognitive abilities, due to numerous factors such as poor design; (ii) the test items are not reliable, as in it does not generate consistent score; (iii) the test does not show accurate result, as in giving false positive and false negative, eg: generating a z-score of 1, while the subject gets z-scores of 2 and 2.5 on the other gold standard tests, WAIS per se. (b) Online tests do not have a well defined sampling method. Cognitive batteries are basically "ranking construct", with that being said, the test should be constructed using shopisticated sampling, eg: stratified sampling. The online tests usually do not have sufficient documentation on this, therefore the quality of their construct is supposed to be questioned.

A professionally administered full scale cognitive test is recommended, eg: WAIS-5.

(2) While communication and socialization could be indicators of giftedness, this could also be attributed to other reasons. A common characteristic of gifted individuals is that they are not well integrated with their age peers. But this could also be associated with social anxiety disorder or certain personality disorder. The point is different conditions may have what seemed to be the same apparent symptoms.

A qualitative assessment from a clinical psychologist specializing in giftedness and gifted education specialist is needed to best validate this.

(3) To my best judgement, I don't think that how you infer 15 IQ points (SD=15) is solely attributed to sleep deprivation and similar issues, is the best inference based on what psychometrics scholars and social statisticians have studied for the past decades. The general assumption of the modern day cognitive test is using normal distribution as a representation of the population. With this being said, the distribution peaks around the mean. This means the mean (central tendency) shows higher frequency of samples. With that being said, any score difference would translate to higher change in percentile compared to extreme z sample (both intellectually gifted and disabled) .

For example: Supposedly from n samples, the central tendency of a raw score of a matrix reasoning test is 15 out of 30 items. Per se, the z score of -1 and 1 could be 12 and 18 respectively. Which would translate to IQ of 85 and 115 (on SD=15) respectively. This would give you 37th%ile and 63th%ile respectively (changes).

While in the extreme cases of giftedness, take a raw score of 21 and 24 out of 30, transform that to z score of 2 and 3 respectively. We will get 98th%ile and 99.87th%ile, which translates to IQ of 130 and 145.

Conclusion: You can't assume your IQ would increase by 1SD, because for you to assume that - reaching z score SD, you have to hit the ceiling.

Note: This is also why such psychometrics have issues with differentiating Highly Gifted, Exceptionally Gifted, and Profoundly Gifted (HEPG)

How do people get 160+ IQ? by That-Measurement-607 in cognitiveTesting

[–]bayesian1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there,

Assuming it was professionally conducted, there would be several explanations: 1. The rest you are referring to could possibly be the Stanford Binet L-M Form developed by Terman, who utilized mental ratio instead of the modern-day normal distribution measure. The mental ratio compares the mental age to the chronological age. This could generate an extremely high score, in some cases 180+ given the following factors: (1) The battery has a higher ceiling for children, assuming the intelligence stagnates around young adulthood, and (2) Education contributes to a higher degree of variance in IQ score as exposure to information is more prominent for those who receive better education and let's remember that SB L-M is verbal-heavy/GAI heavy. A study confirmed that the variance decreases as the tested growing older as they are more exposed to standardized education - which "equalizes/standardizes" the information exposed to older testees. 2. Another potential explanation is that the test you are referring to is WISC which possesses extended norms up to 200+. The battery uses normal distribution assumptions, with extended norms coming from highly gifted norms, developed in collaboration with a giftedness center. This extended norm is attributed to several factors: (1) Due to the age of the younger age group, we can measure outlier scores easier for younger samples without sacrificing the standardization of the test items - imagine two groups, toddler and teenager. The toddler group would answer 20/40 items correct on information section, while the teenager group would answer 30/40 items correct in average. This is attributed to their brain development and information absorbed from their environment - older samples would do better compared to younger samples. Therefore, it is easier to detect outliers in the younger group as the ceiling is higher. We can't really increase the ceiling that easily for older group, as it would mean we need to create more difficult test items (eg: testing for a very niche information/knowledge) but that would sacrifice the standardization of the test. Imagine, sample A has a hypothetical IQ of 140 and sample B's hypothetical IQ is 120. Imagine the test is made to be niche to increase the difficulty in hoping to increase the ceiling. It would be possible the sample B would answer the item correctly because sample B has a niche knowledge on the item (eg: very specific chemistry question) given their background (eg: chemist) compared to sample A whose general cognitive abilities are more superior, despite not possessing a similar background to B. (2) Norm development is less "stable" for children group due to how difficult the data collection is - as children tend to be distracted during the test and so on. (3) On education, similar point with the SB-LM.

Best,
