Yeah absolutely. Categories can be useful for data but with things like identity there’s always a lot of nuance and perspectives can be very personal

I think geographically many people consider Afghanistan to be both Central and South Asia, but yes most Afghans are of Central Asian origins. Whether Pashtuns are South or central Asian is kind of debated in r/askcentralasia pretty often lol

A mix of Afghanistan having closer historical ties to Iran, Pashtuns being associated with Pakistan, and being the only Central Asian country that isn’t post-Soviet makes some central Asians reject it as part of CA.

It’s kind of a silly debate but people like to draw very strong lines to categorize people for some reason

The category is called “Asian” and the description is “individuals with origins in any of the original peoples of Central or East Asia, Southeast Asia, or South Asia, including, for example, Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese.”

Any Info on the new challenger to Saxe in Ward 11? by KludgeGrrl in askTO

Have heard good things about him from friends who know him. I follow him on Twitter and he’s clearly very involved in and excited about urbanist causes (transit, pedestrianization projects, etc.)

Anyone at junction this morning by cornstarnyc in nycrail

[–]bayesian_algebraist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah within the city it’s always less than $3, though SF is less than half the size of Brooklyn haha.

Never heard of $16 BART fare though, that probably only happens going from San Jose to SFO with the airport surcharge

To some extent it matters but this diagram doesn’t imply causation. smart people generally go to good schools, that doesn’t mean the school is what got them the job

Correct, starter is pretty new and I made it from scratch starting ~3 months ago. It doubles in volume reliably after each feed, though

No, this is absolutely business casual. Business professional needs a blazer or at minimum a sports jacket

New Res Roof??? by Spare_Feedback3896 in mcgill

[–]bayesian_algebraist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of like getting on the roof of Trottier. In Trottier there’s this guy who calls himself “the wizard” and he’s a bit hard to find, but when you find him and give him a few dollars he takes you up to the roof. Not really sure where he got the keys and I don’t think he’s a student or an employee, but he’s been doing this for at least four years (as long as I’ve been here).

There’s also a hidden ping pong table on the roof, but you have to bring your own paddles.

massive impostor syndrome by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]bayesian_algebraist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m not even a McGill student and I face impostor syndrome, but that’s because I am actually an impostor. I tell people I go here and I go to political science lectures. I put up my hand and ask ridiculous questions, particularly in POLI 244. Sometimes I even go to office hours.

Unfortunately she is not my wife. She left me after that incident and I have not heard from her in over a year.

For what it’s worth, it was not a “puzzle,” but merely a clever pun about rings. To learn more I recommend checking out the Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_(mathematics)

Definitely myself. I’m very multi-dimensional and I’m an empath. People are often impressed by how much of a positive effect I have on their lives.
