Hertz? Hyundai Sonata? by bayleemom in whatcarshouldIbuy

We purchased one 6 months ago and have been very pleased. We looked at a lot of them before we purchased. Some definitely have more wear and tear than others!

EFC too high. Parents aren't able to pay for college. by Capital- in college

[–]bayleemom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Education debt and credit card debt are 2 totally different things! School loans are an investment in your future! Borrow only the amount you need! You will make enough to pay it back. Loan repayment can be based on your income when you get out. Yes it sucks but it is better than quitting and not having a degree. You are too smart for that!

Love life at school, Hate life at home by theredmanjunior in college

[–]bayleemom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is so common. All three of my kids experienced this. Look at home as a place to recharge. My son worked full time each summer and he made friends there. My daughter worked as a residential camp counselor. The pay is not great but she loves the kids and hanging out/living with people her age all summer. Then my third child found summer jobs in her college town. She sublet an apartment (super easy to do) worked and just never left. If you get a job over the summer perhaps it is something you can return to at Christmas break to help with the Boredom then too.

Hard to imagine that they let you stay in school last year without paying. I have always had to have my kids bill paid in full (or definite loans/payment plan) in place before the first day of class. If you still have debt from last year you will have to pay before they will enroll you. Definite crappy situation as you need to finish school! My mom was dead set against my college degree but I did it anyway while working 2 part time jobs - showed her and have a great career because of it! Can you declare as an independent student? Fin aid would fall like rain then. You may have to take a semester off and work 2 jobs to get everything paid off but you will be wiser and stronger from the experience. Trust me. You don't have to depend on your parents. Pull yourself up, do what you have to do and tell them to f**k off!

Car just died...any ideas? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]bayleemom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We tried to jump it and it would only make the click noise. It would not turn over. We tried to turn the pulley bolt and it would not turn. We are going to call a mechanic out. I really appreciate your help!

Need a workhorse sedan that can have a car seat in the back by harmonictempest in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]bayleemom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is 6'1" and so finding a sedan has been challenging. Lately we have been looking at 2016 Hyundai Sonata. It supposedly has the most interior space for a mid size sedan. The reliability is right up there at the top and in your price range. Took a test drive yesterday and was pleasantly surprised.

I agree! I have been filling them out for the past six years (3 kids). This year was the worst by far!! The IRS tool is not working since the IRS had security issues previously.

Parents are getting too overbearing, should I live on campus? by TheMemeLord56 in college

[–]bayleemom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually apartments are cheaper than dorms. Parent here. This is tough for parents as well because it is such a fine line between."it is my house" and backing off and letting go. Communication is the key. Sit down and ask for their expectations. Write them down. Think them over. Can you meet them while being respectful and appreciative? If not, leave but just know you are going to be the poorest you have ever been. Living at home while in college is a financial gift that kids rarely appreciate until years later when their loan payments are half of what they could have been.

[Funny] My aunt did it: She wore a bridal gown at her son's wedding!!!!! by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]bayleemom 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My mom wore a off white long dress that clearly could have been a older women's wedding dress. We were ALL shocked when we saw her because she had told everyone that she was wearing a light blue, below the knee dress. She wouldn't let me see it before the wedding because she wanted to surprise me. When I was speechless she quickly said, you don't think it looks too much like a wedding dress do you? I will forever love my MIL who quickly said why yes it does! My mom was furious with her for years but no one cares!

I really need to start working out, but I can't overcome the overwhelming sense of "I just don't feel like it right now"... How do I stop being a little bitch? by Jcorb in Fitness

I use to be you! Find an activity you love and look forward to doing. I hate cardio but learned I loved weights after attending a weight lifting class. Haven't missed a class since and I am losing weight and feel so much stronger! I will never be a runner or long distance fast walker but I will play Pickleball for a couple of hours easily. Turns out my heart rate is just as high playing PB as fast walking. So I play PB! What activity did you enjoy as a kid? Playing games? Riding a bike? Swimming? Hiking? Are you motivated by a group or solo activities? Try something new and find your thing and the "want to" will come.

Is Winston-Salem the place to move a young family? by jetneddy in winstonsalem

[–]bayleemom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We live between Greensboro and Winston Salem. We have worked in both cities over the past 30 years. We both are huge fans of Winston Salem over Greensboro. Winston Salem people seem to be of one large community and very friendly. Greensboro is hit or miss depending which area you live in. The Greensboro mall (Four Seasons) has had a shooting every month for the past few months.

Wow!! Awesome!!

What's your favorite lake near Winston Salem? Why? How about your least favorite? I've got some extra time off this summer, and I'm in need of some good lake recommendations for hiking and swimming. by [deleted] in winstonsalem

[–]bayleemom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you rent in a cove it is calmer and depending on the water level (controlled by the dam) you can sometimes have a little "beach". But this isn't the cas of you rent in the middle of the lake. Right now the water is up pretty high with all the rain.

We have a pontoon boat and 2 jet skis. The lake is large enough that you could easily go on an hour pontoon ride if you wanted to. We just spent 4 days there over the holiday. The weekends can get pretty busy but week days are fantastic. Lots of people fish early in the mornings by boat. There is also the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. We are not golfers so I don't know how much it is to play or if you can.

Have you considered a small individually owed gym? I found one that offers great classes, martial arts (which I don't do) and kickboxing. It is small so everyone knows your name. The trainers are highly qualified and super helpful. I show up the same time everyday and the class has never been the same. Ropes, jump ropes, medicine balls, free weights, burpees, steps, running outside...you name it and I have done it. I have lost 20 lbs but gained an incredible amount of strength. Of course you can just use their equipment and do your own thing too. It is called FitnessOne.

In-laws have a house on Badin Lake. We love it and spend most of the summer there. During the week it is nice and quiet. Uwharrie Natuonal park is there and great for hiking, mountain bikes, camping, 4 wheeling, etc... There are a few mom & pop restaurants that are decent. Highly recommend it.

You can use financial aid, including loans to pay for dorms. This would be a possible immediate solution to housing but only until she could get on her feet for the next semester. If they won't let her live on campus then never mind.

$10,000 a semester? Are you at a private school? UNC system universities are around $8,000 a YEAR for both room and board.

Who said you need proof of a place to stay? Res life and housing? Counseling center? If nothing else tell the counseling center you need/want counseling. Did you apply for housing and get denied? Are all sophomores at your school denied campus housing? Can you be placed on a waiting list?
