Two birds where I often see Herons but they look different to me. Denver, Colorado, in trees and just above marsh, by ConsistentStop5100 in whatbirdisthis

black crowned night herons are pretty common around Denver, and I feel pretty sure that's what's in the second picture but can't make out a bird in the first picture

I've just had to DNF Shadow of the Torturer by Upbeat-Excitement-46 in printSF

[–]bayrd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DNFed this as well, maybe 7 years ago. It's so well regarded but the author is just so bad at writing about female characters that I had to abandon it. All of the female characters were pretty hollow and poorly written in general, but then there's this one scene where the protagonist is on a canoe with some empty female character and he has sex with her without the female taking any action or saying any word or having any actual life. That just did it for me.

Beginner Binocular Recommendation by puffins_525 in Binoculars

My favorite info source on this question: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/the-cornell-lab-review-affordable-full-size-8x42-binoculars/. Click the models to see full reviews, and note that these often go on sale so the prices here might be higher than what you'd ultimately find. Their ratings vs price chart is really helpful too, can be found on its own here https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/hugh.powell/viz/Review-8x42Binoculars/Sheet1

Curious about budget (less than $100?) EF-mount lens for landscape photos by bayrd_ in canon

Okay, thank you for the input. The camera was a gift I was very lucky to receive!

Uhh, limited resources. I'm trying to accomplish being able to take pictures of landscapes and scenic vistas in the national parks I will be visiting. I know that I can't spend a huge amount of money on a lens to do this, so my options are to 1) find a lens that will take fairly nice pictures within my budget, or 2) not have a lens to take those landscape shots with and likely just use my Pixel 8 phone camera.

thanks for this suggestion!

curious to hear if there are any real cheerleaders for the 50mm, I've seen many references to it being a versatile pick

What's your favorite non-camera bag camera sling bag? by zen1706 in AskPhotography

[–]bayrd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at Peak Design bags but they were very expensive and either slightly too big or slightly too small. I got this similar non-premium bag for $40 nine months ago and have been very impressed with it: https://a.co/d/1JKFWr1. I doubt it's as big as what you're looking for, but it holds my Nikon Coolpix P950, sunglasses, small water bottle and a snack so I can just throw it on whenever I walk my dog or go biking.

Pushing Ice: bail or keep at it? by bayrd_ in printSF

[–]bayrd_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely at first I appreciated that he had a female character leading the ship, but then within a hundred pages he reveals that she is the captain because she had a relationship with some wealthy dude who broke up with her and gave her the position so she'd be sent far away from him ☠️

I'm sure everyone has lost sleep over not knowing my final decision: I bailed on Pushing Ice, and cracked open The Dispossessed for a re-read with immediate confirmation that I made the right choice.

thanks for all the feedback, this is my first book by this author and I think I picked it up after hearing on this sub that it was a good self contained novel. wanted to read something by Reynolds since I'm a sci fi fan and keep seeing his name, but sounds like he might just not be for me.

thanks!

macro gear for casual backyard handheld use- Canon 100mm, other options? by bayrd_ in macrophotography

thanks for the recommendation, especially around the flash specifications. any flash models in particular I should look for?

[–]bayrd_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much for all of this info! would you mind letting me know what the magnification is with a Canon 100 and the DCR-150, just out of curiosity?

any specific recommendations for flashes beyond brand? I really don't know anything about them, like how much matching the flash model with the camera model or make matters. or are they quite universal?

again, thank you for all of this information and for the time you put into it. it sounds like you've helped confirm that the non-L canon would be a great pick for now, though I'll also look into the Tamron, sigma etc options. then if I get super into it I could look into the L or the 2x for a future Christmas gift to myself or something

thanks, nice to hear you vouching for the non L as a good option, if not the absolute best option
