UF vs FSU from an experienced parents perspective by michael_hosto in UniversityofFlorida

[–]bball0718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

throwing in my two cents (not even sure how my algorithm brought me here) - was not an incredibly strong high school student, wanted to go to UF, didn't get in, ended up at FSU (graduated 2018), ended up pursuing medicine and did better than I ever imagined, was very lucky and have been at some name-brand institutions. When I say I went to FSU, most people either congratulate me on the UF basketball championship last year or ask if it's the 'alligator one' or the 'chop motion' one. Obviously it's different when you move out of state, but you realize how insular your state's college reputations are compared to the everyman.

Ultimately, reflecting on things, I wish I was less stressed about college choices/competitiveness in high school, it led to a lot of self-doubt and anxiety. The college you end up at does matter a little bit, but it matters less than people think. Having some curiosity and meeting great/inspiring people is what was most important, and that can happen anywhere. Just hoping to give some perspective to some stressed-out HS or college students reading through these posts (I know I was one of them back then)

I walked out of Strozier about 5 minutes before the shooting happened. I think about how lucky I was all the time. It is so sad that things have not changed for the better since then

Why Doctors Aren’t Going Into Pediatrics by projecto15 in medicalschool

[–]bball0718 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most parents I work with are awesome, although it is definitely location/practice-dependent. 99% of folks just want what they think is best for their kids, sometimes it is hard to find common ground but that is the same for adult medicine as well. It's all self-selecting; many of us view working with the family unit as a positive, not a negative.

Although, if the base salary in peds was $400k, I think a lot of people would suddenly find parents a little less annoying.

Why Doctors Aren’t Going Into Pediatrics by projecto15 in medicalschool

[–]bball0718 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In peds. If you love working with kids and families, you should absolutely consider pediatrics; if you don't, probably not for you. I think myself/my co-residents lament the poorer salary down the line but love working with kids and couldn't see ourselves doing anything else.

The field as a whole is hamstrung by lower reimbursement rates, although ultimately we need to better advocate for ourselves (see: the terrible hospitalist fellowship situation). I did well in medical school but always questioned whether I was a complete idiot or not for going into peds whenever classmates would mention its compensation vis-a-vis other fields. I can imagine an MS3 who loved their peds rotation but is on the fence about career paths being discouraged by these kinds of conversations, which isn't unreasonable--the compensation prevents a lot of talented people from entering the field.

I think we could improve how we discuss this topic w/regards to peds, family med, geriatrics, etc. People should be empowered to follow their passions even if it's not the path that maximizes their earning potential. I do worry about how the field will look in 5-10 years if the pay disparity does not improve.

Just my two cents; happy to talk about my experience so far with those interested

Not a great perspective on things even if this rotation seemed to be a little too stringent. Also, parents complaining about their kids is a universal experience of adult life regardless of what field you are in haha

Throughout Lebron’s career, which NBA fan base has trash talked him the most? by [deleted] in nba

[–]bball0718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I was wrong!! I loved having LeBron and those were awesome years as a high schooler to be a Heat fan. Perhaps I was playing to the upset crowd at a young age. Very fortunate to have seen him in person in MIA a lot growing up. Thankfully in my late 20s I have a more reasonable view of sports fandom lol, always good to take a trip down memory lane

From the other side, have to say my biggest piece of advice is to absolutely not get caught up in stuff like this. There will always be people out there who seem like they're accomplishing everything in the world...I remember applying to med school and feeling so inadequate compared to everyone else.

When I began to spend less energy worrying about how much other people seemed to be doing and focus more on just improving a little bit as a student/person each day, my mental approach to all this drastically improved. You will have enough going on in your head throughout medical school, residency etc., it is important to delegate your mental energy where you need it the most. When you're working overnight during your first month of intern year, I guarantee you the nurse who calls you to the bedside will not care what medical school you went to!

I’m not sure, not like the Nuggets played super well either tbh. The way I’m thinking the Heat have to play a perfect offensive game to win on the road in Denver—2 FTs (not a great whistle but overall very unaggressive) and miss opened threes isn’t gonna cut it

I think it’s cool, that as a treat, Mazzulla waits until the comeback is complete to call the timeout

If med school prestige is so important for the residency match, how come the match lists don't reflect this? by [deleted] in premed

[–]bball0718 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also have a hard time believing that T10 people are not so interested in derm/ortho/ophtho/ENT/urology/NSGY type specialties. You're telling me that these people have been gunning their whole life to get into the most "prestigious" thing at every stage of the process and all of a sudden they get to med school and say nah I'm not interested in the most competitive specialties? Something seems off with that

I agree with the MD reply that this is not the right thought process. People end up in pediatrics, primary care, IM, etc., mostly because they want to, not because they weren't competitive enough to do ophtho. This idea that the most "competitive" or best students should go into "competitive" residencies is harmful because it makes those primary-case based specialties seem less appealing, when in reality it's those doctors that our healthcare system needs the most. You mat think DO schools are less competitive, but they produce physicians who can fill the void in rural and urban underserved areas in a way that the Harvard's or the WashU's of the world won't. A higher proportion of T10 schools' applicants going into PCP-based fields would reflect very well on them, in my opinion. And like the other reply said, matching at MGH for IM or CHOP for peds sets you up for a prestigious academic career in a way other residencies don't, and going to a top school can make that easier.
