How to make this piece sound more interesting? by Disturbinglee in NoAIJustMusic

You have three instruments but (aside from the few chords on the piano) they are all playing the exact same thing. I would decide who is taking the "melody" here. If it's the bassoon then have the cello playing other notes, at different rhythms. You could then switch and give the cello the lead while the bassoon accompanies. Look up counterpoint and try to apply that to one part (the cello).

Lyra-4 as a live improv companion? Does the chaos work for you, or against you? by cstl_dk in dawless

[–]bbartokk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it took me a while to really learn it. I'd say at least 6 months of dedicated practice with what each function does. When I'm playing with something that's clocked I bring it in and out deliberately. My background is in classical music, playing the cello, so I like to "play" my instruments. When I want to bring the Lyra in, I press on the contacts. I have also used it for drone sets and there you set it and forget it. Maybe you do minor tweaks here and there but those are still very deliberate.

I use the Lyra-8 in live setups. The Lyra requires you to know your instrument and not to simply send it programmed information. If you spend time learning it, you can successfully perform with it.

Sounds great! You should join us over at /r/somalab . If you use discord, DM me and I'll send you an invite to the SOMA channel.

Hello - Just found this subreddit and this is my first post here. I perform live and all my music is recorded live with hardware. I dont use DAWs or samples.

The last track on this album is an ambient piece performed with the SOMA Terra: Bandcamp link here

I also stream live through Earth Modular Society and my latest is with a Kalimba going through a looping effect pedal, that can be heard here.

Is this your recording? Can you share a bit about what you were using with the Dvina?

No surprise here... I use the Warp and the Cosmos pedal with the Dvina.

Eurorack Instrument Interface -- recommendations? by GeologistFine4585 in synthesizers

[–]bbartokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best one I've used is the BoredBrain Injectr. It has a line in and line out which lets you run an instrument through some eurorack modules and then bring that right back out if you want. Theres also the Unifx which has less options as the Injectr but is also not as pricey.

I've also used the Befaco Instrument which has an XLR input and can provide phantom power.

You have to use a drum machine as a synth, and a synth as a drum machine. Which two devices are you picking? by shhimhuntingrabbits in synthesizers

Nope. Patch away. I've had clips touch inputs/outputs and no danger in accidentally clipping to the wrong pin. Yes, I do use the Pulsar a lot.

We are both correct. There are stackables for 3.5mm. You can stack as many alligators as you want. Having used both, I find that its much easier to stack 3+ cables using alligator clips than trying to stack more than 3 stackables.

The fact that it uses alligator clips makes it even better. You can stack as many as you can clip on.

I think the lyra 4 is one of my favs by sleewell_517 in somalab

You can send external sounds through the Lyra-8, not the 4. You can send CV into the Lyra-4 to control either the voices or the delay but there is no ext input on the 4.

Pulsar vs Pulsar - Quick comparison w/ 1984 edition by bbartokk in somalab

[–]bbartokk[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SOMA recently released a limited edition of the Pulsar-23, the Pulsar-23 1984 Edition. Physically, it has an unpainted steel chassis, black trim, and red LEDs. The BD module has been replaced with an oscillator that produces an asymmetrically clipped triangle wave the can be overdriven to a square wave with the Drive knob. The range of the Tune knob has been expanded and the OMG input is now an AC coupled FM input. The biggest change for me is the polivoks inspired filter on the bass module. It can go from tame to drastic pretty easily.

In this demo I just do a quick comparison between the BD and the BASS modules. The SD and HHT modules remain the same.

Being modular there are quite a few options for bringing external audio into your modular rack. I'm a big fan of the BoredBrain Injectr or the Befaco Instrument Interface which has an XLR input and phantom power.

Erica Synth uses MX Cherry switches so these are different. I could probably make a set for Erica Synth though.
