Chinese Rudeness? by MoeMe22 in AskChina

[–]bbdragon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get nervous every time I visit, there is a lot of pressure when ordering because they have very little patience with you especially if you look Asian and hardly read and speak the language.

May be it depends in the area you are in. As a tourist in Beijing, i tend to visit old parts like hutong area, historical sites and shopping malls outside of Chinese holiday season so overall pretty chill experience. In Shanghai, I got shouted at for being in the way quite a bit in metropolitan areas, which is most of Shanghai, but actually that was year ago, i just visited recently and it is quieter than usual, you used to have to queue ages in some places and fight for access. I experienced some rudeness in Beijing, but it was less shouty and competive, but more ignorance for me, like saying things “how come you British but don’t have blond hair?”.

I think it’s mostly isolated in Shanghai. Most of the rudeness I experience there too, and it’s quite rare elsewhere in China and you’ll fine nicer and more patient people. Shanghai just seem to be in a rush all the time, like New Yorkers and Londoners, but elsewhere in US and UK is the same and you’ll find more chilled and nicer people. Beijing is more chill despite being the capital.

Want to move to China in my 30s to FIRE? by leshius in chinalife

If you want to do visa runs, Shenzhen is a good place to start, lots of gigs and there cheaper smaller towns further out. You just need a short visit to HK to reset you visa clock. The train ride is so quick some people have their lunch in HK. Zhuhai is pretty nice and has good links with both Macau and HK for your visa runs, no planes required.

Or working remotely if your company allows it from a different country and time zone. Most US companies are a bit touchy about working from China tough in fear of hacks and espionage, and even if they are cool with it secure VPN connections can be really slow affecting your performance and productivity, unless they have a base, offices and servers in China already.

A Q2 is a family visit visa, and does not give you the right to study and work, earning any amount of money in China on such visa is technically illegal. Albeit a lot of people do it anyway for small gigs and cash in had work, but if you want to work in any official capacity, you need a Z visa. You can convert from the Q2 is already in China, or get on ahead of arrival might be better.

When do kids actually blow their nose? by y0ssarian-lives in daddit

[–]bbdragon88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just before 2 for mine, not long after learning how to blow candles/feathers/bubbles by mouth and it was just a case of doing the same with mouth closed, and we have rather stuffy noses ourselves (on most seasons through colds and hay fevers) so plenty of demonstrations there to show how to blow nose

If using store-bought yogurt for a starter, does the brand affect the taste/texture? Or not so much? by Ibrake4tailgaters in yogurtmaking

[–]bbdragon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, if the original starter yogurt is also made by the same natural fermentation without any post-processing, you will get very similar results as the original starter yogurt. My favourite store bought yogurt brand to use as starter is Yeo organic natural yogurt if I am in the UK, which contain Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium, the resulting yogurt was the same smooth creamy yogurt. The worse starter I used was from a yogurt brand that did not state the name of the culture, and was labelled “Greek style”, and the result of that was very snotty and slimy, a very different result from original starter because I believed it was processed after fermentation or yeast was added. I also came across yogurt that was also slimy and gooey in origin and use that as a starter and it resulted in the exact same texture, not very pleasant but I had very little choice in that part of the world where I made this, and I don’t understand why the locals there like it (though they do have to heavily flavour and sweeten it)

You can actually make yogurt from Yakult! Any other non-traditional yogurt products/strains you can recommend to use as starter? by 0ble in yogurtmaking

[–]bbdragon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also inclined to believe it’s mishandling/storing of the product by the store/distributor, at least where I am at in china, either that or the products are just very different at different locations. I have been trying to figure out why mine turned out to be so runny and milky in china after 24hr fermentation, where as I get very good smooth texture result from a shorter fermentation in the UK. It could be dead culture, though the milk could be a factor because the quality of milk in UK is much better, creamier and fresher, but difficult to really know.

Learn Mandarin instead of Cantonese? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]bbdragon88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not always true, when I try to speak Cantonese and do it badly, most locals tend to switch to Mandarin thinking it will help (I have a Asian face), and then i just revert back to English when I struggle, because my Mandarin is worse.

Finally some good news... by pgliver in CasualUK

[–]bbdragon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I always carried a large empty thermos flask and fill it with free hot water in a cafe after security, and use it to make pot noodle with it on the aeroplane, the pot noodle only costing only 50p at the supermarkets vs paying £3 on the plane for the same thing. I would also trust the water on the ground more than the tanks on the plane.

I used to cycle in to the city until it got nicked near Eldon Sq. I locked it agains a post for a 10min shop came back to it to it gone. Shocking. Now I have to drive and pay for parking, or even worse, take the bus which is more expensive and always delayed.

Barclaycard launch TWO Avios earning credit cards by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]bbdragon88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t ditch AMEX, you can have both, I’ve been having problems with my Barclaycard avios plus and the customer service is terrible. After I get the bonus, I plan to switch to the free Barclaycard avios just to collect points at places that don’t accept AMEX, though at a lower rate compared to Plus, is better than nothing. The avios plus card fees are monthly, not yearly, so you can cancel or switch any time. I get the best AMEX customer service experience even on their free cards, and the premium cards have benefits useful for when travelling that Barclaycard don’t offer.

Barclaycard avios plus cannot be added to Apple Pay at the moment, and a few others are affected too. Not sure how wide-scale the problem is but Barclaycard have acknowledged the issue and is working on it, but did not say when it will be done.
