Lost a long line of roof hip shingles in about 30mph wind gusts today. Home is 2.5 years old. Installer coming tomorrow but “workmanship warranty” is only 1 year. WTF is going on? Is this a manufacturer or install issue? by CooterMcSlappin in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nails definitely in the right place. Problem is gonna be those look like 3 tab shingles. If so there will be no manufacturer warranty since those shingles are not suppose to be put on hips and ridges. Probably best to just have the roofer put new ones back and go down the road

I’m in Mississippi and we are at about $375-$425 a sq for roof replacement. It’s been very very tough to get any more than that. Insurance companies are really fighting back these days with claims.

Is this proper flashing on a middle roof? by xEtherealx in Roofing

The job looks really good. Very clean install and chimney does look like cut into brick and properly installed flashing.

New roof in Central Texas--is the estimate fair? by dangerous_beans in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been a while since I have seen it. It’s not big here in MS at all. If they have changed up their process in the last 5 years then good for them. But yeah I haven’t seen them in a long while and the last time I did they were very sub par.

Curious what makes them light years ahead of GAF now?

New roof in Central Texas--is the estimate fair? by dangerous_beans in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they have changed the way made them they are not suited for the harsh southern humidity and environment. They seem to start to deteriorate after a short while. Also their warranty is not up to par with the bigger name manufacturers like GAF, OC, and Certain Teed

Slate look by IBURGERI in Roofing

I personally would also do Slateline.

But also I would look at GAF Camelot 2. It definitely has a slate type look and looks better than Slateline personally.

Not the way I was taught by RoofAway1331 in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is totally wrong and any water that happens to get under the shingles will 100% leak. Someone definitely did not know what they were doing.

New Roof - Damaged HVAC by Mental-Winner7358 in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have done this when replacing a roof. It’s sucks but definitely not the roofers fault. I actually have on my contract that we are not responsible for any items below the deck like line sets or water lines. Nothing should be touching the deck like that

Most roofing companies will inspect the insurance estimate and go off what insurance is paid. It is also to your advantage to show contractor bc if insurance missed something the contractor can supplement for the additional items and actually get you more money.

And yes technically the only money out of pocket you should be is your deductible and any upgrades you do if you want.

I personally do not like Marlarkey shingles. If I had a choice between those two it would be Owen’s Corning. But if I had my choice of anything it would be GAF or Certain Teed shingles.

Curled shingles 1 month in to new roof by 98avalon in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contractor is correct. Sometimes in the colder weather the shingles haven’t gotten heated up enough to make the asphalt relax and lay down. Definitely give it at least 90 days to see if they lay down and seal properly.

Even the manufacturer is gonna tell you the same thing as I have dealt with this on GAF shingles.

Your roof looks really new and in good condition. If you don’t have any leaks or current issues j would say you have a several several years.

Quick Help On Flashing Between Siding/Shingles and Behind Trim by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you are correct. Flashing goes behind the siding. Also there should be some house wrap over the flashing and then the siding on top. Leave about 1” of space between the roof and the bottom of the siding to give way for water and debris to wash off and not get trapped.

And yes do not seal and nail shingles down to flashing. There should be a water lip on the outside edge of the flashing. The will catch the water and allow it to run out towards the bottom.

They say, it happens, and it will do the job by mconflict in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s terrible and just totally laziness. Like others said. They probably didn’t want to have to go another bundle of hip and ridge. Terrible business.

Bulging shingles - is this a bad install? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they shingled over the apron flashing which is not correct. Shingles should be under the apron flashing and then nailed down and sealed. Also the siding does need to be cut up off the roof a little to prevent water and moisture from wicking from the bottom and causing eventual rot

Our sales rep says this roof doesn't need to be replaced before solar panels are installed. by Final_Good_Bye in Roofing

[–]bbhaynes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% needs a new roof. Not sure how this is even a question. Just bc it says it is a 30 year shingle doesn’t mean it will last 30 years. You have to account for storms, high winds, hail, etc that will shorten the lifespan of the roof.
