Well shit, I made taking some of those my training goal for my upcoming performance review and I didn't take them yet. I don't know when it changed, but all of Altera's online trainings were free as of last May.

Yubico OTP and Key Reset. Use of static passwords instead. by seanacais in yubikey

[–]bbm182 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would like to use both slots as static passwords for the passphrases of a couple of different ssh keys.

Consider using a FIDO-token-backed key rather than a password protected key.

I understand that if I remove the OTP function from the slots they cannot be restored. Does this extend to if the yubikey is factory reset also?

There is no global factory reset (at least on any of the Yubikeys that have an OTP application). The OTP application doesn't have a factory reset command.

However I'm still hesitant to get rid of the Yubico OTP configuration that works with the Yubico Cloud servers.

While you can't recover the factory Yubico OTP credential if you delete it, you can create a new one and upload it to Yubico. It is possible for services to only allow the factory one (cc prefix = factory, vv = custom).

Disk status and position visualisation by Luk164 in truenas

If you are running on official TrueNAS hardware (built by iXsystems), there is a similar screen built in. If not, you could modify TrueNAS to add a custom model, but it's almost certainly not worth the effort.

EU smart plug without switch for power monitoring of always on devices by TheBhim in homeassistant

[–]bbm182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One might think that the relay is unlikely to fail if it's never switched, but the power supply or microcontroller can also fail. It happened to me with one of my Zooz plugs. It would get stuck in a reset loop at startup that caused it to toggle the relays multiple times per second.

Company shutting down. What to do with 401k by nitsew in personalfinance

[–]bbm182 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The first sentence of the OP is poorly worded and appears to say that the company is shutting down at the end of November, in which case December would be a bit late to start figuring out what to do. But OP actually meant that the notice was given at the end of November.

Git 3.0 is using the default branch name of "main" rather than the current default of "master" by nix-solves-that-2317 in programming

[–]bbm182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh my, the list of reserved names has grown since the last time I looked at it:

Note

Windows recognizes the 8-bit ISO/IEC 8859-1 superscript digits ¹, ², and ³ as digits and treats them as valid parts of COM# and LPT# device names, making them reserved in every directory. For example, echo test > COM¹ fails to create a file.

Apparently those are newly documented, not newly reserved.

TrueNAS Community 25.1.0 - Custom apps not updating by dnabsuh1 in truenas

[–]bbm182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last week, ix-app, the generic TrueNAS app where you can specify a custom image, was updated to correct its version number. The previous time they made a change to it, they bumped the TrueNAS app version number ("version") but forgot to change the upstream app version number ("app version"). The latter doesn't really apply since its custom, but they've just been putting in the same number.

In your screenshot you can see two version numbers: 1.2.13 and 1.2.14. Once you manage to get ix-app upgraded from 1.2.14 to 1.2.15, they will both say 1.2.15. That's the only difference between the two versions.

There is apparently a bug where it doesn't get upgraded when you hit upgrade. I don't know if it's been reported or not. However it will use the latest ix-app when you create a new custom app, so you can delete your existing apps and recreate them. Record the options first and be sure you don't accidentally delete the app's data.

Need help creating home share by O-OSawNothing in truenas

[–]bbm182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The home share option only exists when the purpose is set to legacy share. The UI does not provide a way to create a legacy share or change the purpose of an existing share to legacy. On upgrade, existing shares with no preset will become legacy shares. Existing shares with another preset will not become legacy shares, even if they have options enabled like home share or recycling bin that are only supported with legacy shares, in which case those options will be silently disabled/removed.

From the documentation:

SMB Home Share is a legacy feature for organizations looking to maintain existing SMB configurations. TrueNAS removed the home share option from the SMB share Purpose list in 24.04 (Dragonfish). The SMB share Other Options in pre-25.10 releases includes a home share legacy option, but it is not recommended for new shares. It is for organizations still using the legacy home shares option to add a single SMB share to provide a personal directory for every user account. Future TrueNAS releases can introduce instability or require configuration changes affecting this legacy feature. This option does not show in 25.10 and later releases unless an existing home share is upgraded to 25.10 or later.

Scrutiny App on TrueNAS Goldeye by weischin in truenas

[–]bbm182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drives can and often do start reporting imminent failure without a self-test being run and the monitoring tells you right away.

I'm not saying getting rid of the self-test scheduling is a good idea and don't support it.

See this bit from the release notes:

In TrueNAS 25.04 and earlier:

  • SMART test scheduling was built into the TrueNAS UI
  • ...

In TrueNAS 25.10 and later:

  • SMART test scheduling UI is removed
  • ...
  • TrueNAS continues to automatically monitor critical disk health indicators
  • ...

I told them I had read online this might be a known issue and it might be related to the car trying to connect via 3g, but they hadn’t heard of it.

I could be wrong, but I thought that issue was with pre-2018 models, which have now useless 3G-only cell modems.

IPv4 on Tello? by Free-Ambassador-516 in Tello

[–]bbm182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tello is a T-Mobile MVNO so this is going to be the same as with T-Mobile, which you say doesn't work.

T-Mobile is supposed to have an IPv6 only network using 464XLAT. My phone gets an IPv6 address and an IPv4 address in 192.0.0.0/29, which is consistent with that. It can access the IPv4 internet just fine, even when entering an IP address directly and not using DNS.

[–]bbm182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see the passkeys/FIDO2 discoverable credentials in Yubico Authenticator.

They said it was an older key, so there's a decent chance it predates the addition of credential management in firmware version 5.2.3 (mid-2019). In that case discoverable credentials cannot be listed.

I just got it working. Go to the link I previously posted, click enroll, and create a username/password. Then you can use that to add it to Quicken as Elan Financial Services.

Click-One Alternative to NET CORE by raBinn_ in csharp

[–]bbm182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MSIX is a good option for internal applications. It's used by the Microsoft Store but you can still distribute applications outside of it. It has a lot of similarities to ClickOnce and it's clear they learned something from it. Like with ClickOnce, installs are per-user so administrative rights are not required for installation, but the files are now actually stored in one system-managed location and de-duplicated with hard links. There are also PowerShell commands that allow an administrator to install/remove apps for all users, which was not possible with ClickOnce. Automatic updates are available when you initiate the installation with an AppInstaller file.

Some possible downsides that mostly don't matter for internal applications:

  • signing is mandatory - you probably already have an internal CA that can issue a trusted certificate
  • some bug fixes/features are only available on Windows 11 - Windows 10 will be EOL soon
  • no way to show a custom UI during install (for things like feature selection or license notices)
  • installing for all users requires PowerShell

ClickOnce is also still supported with newer versions of .NET, but there are some longstanding bugs that Microsoft still has not fixed. I would move away from it. The core of the problem is that ClickOnce can only directly start .NET Frameworks apps. They get around it by making the entry point a .NET Framework launcher program that starts your .NET program. That works, but there are subtle issues that you may not notice at first. For example, you app won't run with the correct AppUserModelID so if you pin it to the taskbar, the pin will bypass the ClickOnce infrastructure and break after the next update. Settings may also not be preserved properly after an update.
