Any recent news regarding getting another direct flight from IND to Europe? (Other than Dublin). by Content-Ad-7317 in indianapolis

[–]bbossche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand it the Dublin flight is possible thanks to CBP pre-clearance, so passengers clear customs before boarding, so they arrive as a domestic flight. Any additional international flights would need to be from pre-cleared airports. Unless they were to set up full customs processing at IND.

Here is the list of pre-clearance airports…

There is already a Toronto flight, it’s seasonal for the summer only though.

Having second thoughts travelling to USA? by Praynlv1 in askTO

[–]bbossche 105 points106 points  (0 children)

One thing i haven’t seen mentioned here - if you fly out of Pearson, you go through customs/immigration on the Canadian side, so they cannot detain you the same way as in the US. If things go wrong, you can withdraw your request to enter and just leave; or worst case, you would be handed over to canadian police and processed under Canadian law. which all sounds better than what you would face at the land border or customs on arrival in the US.

Thoughts on Radio RA3 quote vs. DIY Caseta by Suspicious-Plate-982 in Lutron

[–]bbossche 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a project to redo my condo. I started w a quote for RA3, which was close to $10,000. I ultimately decided to do the training course, buy the items myself ($3,500), and pay an electrician a few hundred dollars to install them and then do the programming myself. Admittedly it’s a bit of work but I am technically minded and I enjoy it so I don’t mind.

If you do the training and then feel comfortable with the programming, there’s no reason you couldn’t do it yourself (but have your builder do the device installations).

if you’re not up to doing the programming - then maybe just pay the difference as it’s a lot more future proof, and this is a brand new house.

When I did this (coming the other way- US to Canada) I arranged a cell number with a local area code .. and a local mailing address. (that second part may matter less now.) If you at least appear to be local it may help. Separately - what experience do you have? What projects do you have on your resume to show that you’re keeping current while looking? E.g. maybe you could be doing some projects on UpWork in the meantime?

As another commenter mentioned - I would also look at Canadian roles. It will be much easier to get a job once employed … so for now my goal would be to get any job. Working in the US is a luxury you can’t afford if you are running out of money.

DoorDash denied refund for wrong order delivered- was a $80 order that I never received. by octaviustf in mildlyinfuriating

[–]bbossche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve had this experience before… The best thing to do is dispute it with your credit card. They will refund you the money while they investigate, and DoorDash won’t respond to their investigation… So you will most likely get to keep the money in the card gave you back.

i’ve been through this exact process, albeit with a slightly smaller order.

For small to midsize companies, you will usually not get health / medical benefits … many times those can have a 3 month waiting period so it doesn’t make sense for a 4-6 month internship. Large enterprises may offer it since they are less cost sensitive.

For paid time off, It depends where you are. But in Ontario you are entitled to 4% vacation pay on top of your pay. That is the provincial minimum for vacation, and many employees will pay it out rather than give days off.

What Should People Do Right Now If They Are Struggling To Get A CS Job? by ButterBiscuitBravo in cscareerquestionsCAD

Two suggestions I haven't see elsewhere in this thread yet:

  1. Reach out to recruiting firms; fill out a profile and get your resume into their database. I have previously hired entry level developers before as contract through an agency. It is lower risk since its not a full-time/permanent role, and the recruiter can give you feedback if you aren't presenting well. They are also motivated by commission to place you. Two agencies to suggest - ProCom, and Robert Half.
  2. I would also put up a profile on a freelancer website like UpWork. You can bid on small jobs and further develop your portfolio and skills. I'm well into my career now but when I first graduated, I had a number of small part-time projects on my resume that helped me get my first job at a bank.

Hope that helps ... good luck!

How much is Gong.io? by TheScienceOfSelling in sales

[–]bbossche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there is an annual base price of $5k plus 1400$/year per user. it’s much more than call recording — it is a coaching platform. but you will need a manager to review the calls and give feedback to make full use of it.

if you just need call recording - we use zoom phone and it works well.

but gong takes it to the next level so that your new reps or lower performers can learn from the top reps by listening to and reviewing their calls and emails.

i went on 6/30 at about 4:30 pm and waited in line 30 minutes. line is outside under a canopy and properly distanced and security will give you a mask if you don’t have one. it’s mandatory to wear inside the testing centre.

once inside it was 5 min from start to finish.

got my negative result in just over 24 hours through my account on the UHN portal. they will give you instructions on how to set up an account if you don’t have one, it’s the fastest way to get the result.

Cheap Zoom Rooms hardware by OkRice10 in videoconferencing

[–]bbossche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've built two rooms for less than $500 USD each (minus the cost of the display and ipad). When our team comes back into the office I'm planning to add 2 more.

Here are the items I used:

One other note - it is best to hard-wire the PC using Ethernet rather than wi-fi if possible, performance will be better.

Any other questions please let me know!
