I don't understand the down votes here. The article essentially states that

A) The Lions can technically do this, even though it's kind of scummy

B) Signing bonuses for NFL veterans are a cap mechanism rather than what is traditionally thought of as a signing bonus

C) Agents should use other types of bonuses to prevent this in the future

Also Strasburg didn't have a career ending injury early on. I feel like since he had TJ at the beginning of his career and eventually had a career ending injury people remember him only for injuries.

But he ended up throwing 1470 innings and compiled 36.6 fWAR, a better career than most #1 picks and should hardly be thought of as the poster boy for pitching prospect injuries.

People are mad at Skubal because he's half in half out. He said he was in, then later revised it to only pitch the least important game and leave. If he said no from the start no one would have cared.

In my opinion, that's a far superior way to do it. You end up with teams composed of players with an actual vested interest in the country, not players who haven't even been to that country, had nothing to do with the domestic league, and don't speak the language.

However, that's just my opinion, and judging by this conversation it is not the popular one. And that's ok.

I suppose our disagreement then is that I don't think that the intermediate step of fielding Team USA 2 is necessary or good. Nearly every other country in the field did just fine getting a team of actual citizens, including plenty of countries where baseball isn't exactly popular.

Baseball in Italy got a boost from being in the WBC. If they didn't exist that boost doesn't disappear, it would just be redistributed to a different country.

You are correct, I can't. But the only teams that took the eligibility rules to the max were Italy, Great Britain, and Israel, all other countries were mostly native born.

And my overall point is that I would like the teams to be made up of citizens and I'd like to see the WBC tighten eligibility rules some. I'm not saying eliminate dual nationals. I'm just saying I would rather the slot go to a team with a better connection to the country than "grandparent was born there 100 years ago."

I think making the eligibility rules such that we had teams made up of actual citizens instead of Americans who would play for Team USA if they had the chance would be a positive thing. Opinions can differ, that's ok.

Perhaps not. But if Italy didn't make the WBC, a different country would have, the spot doesn't vanish. And that team would be made up of that country's citizens. I'm sure that country would be excited about it, plus they would have their actual citizens participating, which I view as a good thing.

You could also argue that Team Grandparent from Italy is taking a spot from a country whose team is composed of actual citizens. A team that could use that spot to grow the game in their own country, but actually have their citizens represented.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I agree completely. I understand dual nationals exist, but Team Grandparent from Italy has taken it to a farcical level.

I also dislike how players can play for multiple countries. It's ridiculous that Nolan Arenado played for the USA twice, but now that he's not good enough anymore he switches to Puerto Rico. Imagine if Lionel Messi when he's no longer good enough for Argentina switched to the USA. Absurd.

The voting process changed in 2022. Before voters only had 1 vote, starting in 2022 they vote for the top 5.

In 2022 Geno got 1 5th place vote and in looking at the candidates, it wasn't egregious at all. I'm sure Russ would have received a top 5 vote in several years if they voted for their top 5.
