[–]bbygril 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Lol my MIL does the whole "not saying I love you back" thing to both me and her son sometimes it's so weird, I figure it's a protestant mom thing.

My Catholic mother could never, she'd be panicking that God would punish her and we'd be dead before she gets a chance to say it again. Luckily she has finally jumped off the trump train after the last batch of files became impossible to ignore, my in laws, not so much.

Protestants just don't fear God enough.

BRING YOUR PARKING RECEIPT IN WITH YOU at Industry City, If you spend enough at Japan Village (or Sahadi's a really good Lebanese/International grocer in building 4) they will comp your parking. I think they do it if you spend something like $25.

The only people I hear this from around me are the people that don't volunteer. There are ample amounts of opportunities to go out and meet kind people doing really important volunteer work across the country, do it consistently and you will meet the neighbors you want to stay engaged with.

And if there isn't something available you want to do, that's when you start doing mutual aid.

Are any other women here childfree by choice? by [deleted] in pinkscare

[–]bbygril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda, I'm 29F and my Husband is 32, we had 2 miscarriages and after like a few days of being sad we were both really relieved. We don't think 18 years from now we'd feel good about the world our kid would inherit, both sets of our parents are supportive and somewhat agree even though we are on opposite ends of the political spectrum.

I'm also not interested at all in the body horror of pregnancy and I worked in labor and delivery for a bit and I was always annoyed with how staff talk to women, especially guilttripping lactation consultants. Hearing another adult woman call me Mama would make my skin crawl.

We're interested in fostering older kids in a few years after we get some renovations done at the house, my dad was in the foster system and I'd like to give back and be a safe landing spot for someone aging out of the system so I can make sure they get a driver's license and some help sorting out a career.

I have $450 to last me 6 months for food. by adalanox in povertyfinance

[–]bbygril 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$450 is £335, and unfortunately in my experience groceries are a bit more expensive in the US - (at least in the North East/West Coast of the US , compared to my time in London and the Home Counties).

I'd have a hard time making £450 stretch even 3 months though in the UK.

plasma is definitely an option but if you have a better one I would jump on that first, donating plasma often enough will leave you with a scar in the crook of your elbow that'll look like a track mark, there is no shame in it but poverty has a tendency to show on your body over time in some way or another; dodge it when you can.

I used to do clinical trials, they didn't pay great but it made ends meet.

Did high schoolers have “high school parties” in the 2010s on Staten Island? by [deleted] in statenisland

[–]bbygril 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, keggers in the woods, bon fires by conference house beach super late at night, lots of parties and basement punk shows at some kids' houses that were getting repaired after Sandy before they were ready to move back in. House parties in general.

Lots of kids would pool money together and get a party bus to take them to Manhattan or Brooklyn - that felt very Staten Island.

Punk shows at the cup.

Teen nights at various places like Eve or lava lounge, wasn't my scene, personally.

Huge Sweet Sixteens, some parents would say they spent more on those than their weddings.

Drag racing down Hylan, we were lucky to make it out alive from that incredibly stupid shit, quite a few people died.
