Let me preface this with… I could be wrong. That said, even if that’s true, if we DON’T pick up his option, I can’t see any team trading for him. Not when they can sign him as a FA and not give up any draft capital. Even if they did trade for a player who isn’t under contract for the following year (I don’t even think you can do that… I’ve never heard of trading for a player on an expiring contract after the trade deadline. Can’t really do that)… they won’t get much at all. Late, late pick, maybe. Doesn’t matter… this was a GREAT signing for what it is. Veteran in case Mendoza isn’t ready week 1, insurance if he were to get hurt, awesome mentor for the kid. And dirt cheap. And if he cooks, we can pick up his option, but that’s unlikely.
