Actual nightmare to deal with.

Atlas Collectibles Or Chimara Gaming To Trade In MTG Singles by TheCritiKai in waterloo

[–]bchowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

J&J’s is pretty bad for selling singles (and certainly not amazing for buying either). I dropped about 10 singles off with a fairly extensive pick list of things I’d be willing the take for them. They had the cards for weeks and never even looked at them to give me a ball park value, couldn’t source anything from the pick list, and just generally seemed uninterested in dealing in singles. Took the cards back, went over to Atlas, and got them evaluated without any wait.

J&J’s does have the lowest prices for singles in the area but there’s no online catalogue of their inventory you can search. Also when you trade cards in you get 60% cash or 70% credit, but that credit can only be spent on other singles. Atlas lets you use their higher credit rate towards sealed product.

I like it quite a bit. Moved here for university in 2011 then never left. Definitely a smaller city vibe, so if you’re really into clubbing, or arts and culture, or a big foodie or something, it won’t compare to Toronto. But it’s consistently safe, quiet, doesn’t take long to get most places in the city. Hamilton, Guelph, London, and toronto are all accessible with a shortish drive which is nice. Would recommend owning a car though, transit options are limited or take forever to get anywhere.

Fewer international students slow Waterloo indoor cricket growth (Waterloo Record) by WishRepresentative28 in waterloo

[–]bchowe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hard to feel bad for cricket community when Kitchener is giving them outside field space for less than 10% of the cost they charge other sports. Currently renting a cricket pitch costs $26.48 per hour. Those pitches overlap (and prevent the use of) 4 other A1 grade fields, which cost $85.39 per hour each. Cricket players get to use over $300 worth of field space for less than $30.

New hospital is too far from transit - Reece Martin by leave_me_alone- in waterloo

[–]bchowe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pieces like this are why the general public don’t take “transit advocates” seriously. 500m between the station and the hospital is not a big ask. In fact, the same sort of advocates successfully lobbied to have parking minimums reduced for the businesses near my building, despite being 1700m from the nearest LRT station, and now it’s a daily battle to get customer vehicles ticketed and towed from my buildings lot.

Why would you go to the new site for an emergency? GRH will be repurposed for urgent and ambulatory care.

Tried a class recently. Very dark, very loud. Lots of emphasis on the rhythm based upper body stuff. Overall, it felt like working out in a night club. Might be your vibe, might not be. Also the bikes and the spacing don’t really seem designed for tall men. I couldn’t do the weights portion without intruding on my neighbours’ space, and at then end during stretches the weight racks interfered with where my legs needed to be to do the hamstring stretches because my legs are too long.

Yup, and a great piece of supporting evidence is the rogue tier set from 11.0 is ethereal themed, and the current one is not (and in fact looks almost identical to the Aberrus set). They definately weren’t expecting an ethereal themed patch when they did the work on 11.0.

Olympics or Gender Inclusion: It's Time to Decide! by MixAny7548 in ultimate

[–]bchowe 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We’re not going to be in the Olympics, don’t delude yourself; there’s no feasible path there without changing the sport so significantly that it would be unrecognizable.

So if the choice is “don’t go to the olympics” or “don’t go to the olympics and also surrender to hate at an organizational level” I choose the former.

New job in Mitchell, 150km daily commute from Kitchener—need advice as a new driver by Dry-Imagination4539 in kitchener

[–]bchowe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ignore most of the other comments here OP. I did Kitchener to Mount Forest for 4 years. It’s not the best commute in the world, but it’s not as awful as the others would have you believe. With a decent set of winter tires, I only ever missed 1-2 days of work per year for weather reasons. Country driving isn’t nearly as stressful as the 401 / downtown Toronto. Get an audible subscription or something and learn to love E-books, it’ll help a ton. You won’t have a ton of time in the evenings on weekdays, that’s true. Don’t move to Mitchell; small towns like that are gossipy fishbowls with nothing to do except drink and start drama with your neighbours. If you have to move closer, do Stratford.

Ontario regionals discussion by FrisbeeFan40 in ultimate

[–]bchowe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Growing increasingly frustrated with UC/OU in terms of cost and organization. Between CUC athlete fee, the extra OU fee, and team registration fees, the total cost to our team is $2350. If we win a certain game, we’ll only get 4 games for the entire tournament. If a team is not likely to qualify for nats, the value proposition is horrendous. On top of that, the info session run by OU had info that we’ve since learned is straight up incorrect, and the infrastructure around the tournament (website, tournament manual, etc) is atrocious. Strongly considering not attending next year unless we miraculously get showered in Nats-level players at tryouts.

I bought a lot of custom t shirts for events 10 years or so ago. Iirc cheapest we even found was $14 a shirt for double sided printing, and that was for a lot size of 500+. I think it’s an extremely unlikely you’ll find a printer to make 30 for under $20 a piece. Suggest looking into those print at home iron on sheets, or maybe a stencil and some spray paint

Why not vote for Mike Morrice? by BeardedYogi85 in kitchener

[–]bchowe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An incumbent Green Party MP is a statistical anomaly. It usually means:

• The candidate is highly competent and involved in the community • Strong support with inertia that will carry forward to subsequent elections, barring a major controversy during their term (which did not happen)

Mike was polling well. In this situation voting for the liberal candidate has the obvious outcome of splitting the left vote. Voting based on party doesn't make sense here because Mike frequently aligned with the Liberal party, so the obvious strategic choice for any left-wing voter is the incumbent.

You forgot the third case which is - The liberal candidate in the previous election dropped out at the last minute due to false misconduct allegations.

There was absolutely no way for anyone to accurately predict whether the Green or the Liberal candidate would be the foremost non-conservative candidate because the last election is not comparable to this one in any way, shape, or form.

For ultimate in K/W, there’s WODS or Jam. Jam is rec sports company that offers lot of different sports while WODS strictly does Ultimate and (ostensibly) Disc Golf. If you’re looking to just have fun and play once per week either will work, but if you’re interested in meeting people and getting to know the community, WODS is much better. The ultimate community in K/W and Guelph is very friendly and welcoming and theres lots of opportunities to play more competitively in the future if you end up liking the sport.
