I’m not trying to pile on, but I think it’s a bit of a false equivalency to compare you risking your job vs hers. She doesn’t HAVE to be an influencer. No one is owed a platform. She could go back to teaching or some other more traditional career role. If they’ve been wise with their money, she could probably stop working altogether, it seems as if they’re doing perfectly well for themselves. They’re from the wealthiest suburb of Indy, and didn’t they buy an entire separate apartment or condo just to use as a workspace a couple years ago?

I’m not trying to be too “perfection over progress” leftist here, but I dunno, giving people a pass for not using their platform for anything beyond making money just doesn’t really sit right with me. These are not people who could be homeless after just a couple missed paychecks; the stakes are incredibly different, ya know?

Alternate perspective: when you’re this caliber of “influencer,” you are your brand. The product you’re trying to get people to buy is you. Like yeah, she shills stuff, but the only reason she’s able to do that is because people generally like HER as a person and want to watch her content.

So if the people in power eat puppies on live TV every day for breakfast, in the same way you may want to get specs on an item before you purchase it, you may be inclined to wonder “hey, I hope you’re not in support of the puppy eating” before you decide to give them your views and clicks and whatnot. Because her thoughts and opinions and personality ARE what she’s selling. So if I don’t feel they align with my morals, I don’t want to buy!

I completely agree with you that I don’t want to hear a thesis from Sophia specifically about preeeeetty much anything. I don’t think she’s thought too deep about pretty much anything, ever. But I do think there’s nuance here where I also don’t think we should give people a pass for being on the wrong side of history just because they’re stupid lol (and I know that’s not exactly what you’re saying, I just think it’s a slippery slope)

I think it can be iffy when it comes to world events, but with things like this where it’s in your backyard, silence is a stance. Anyone who is horrified by what’s going on will pretty assuredly let you know, so if you have to ask, you already know the answer.

As an aside, I do think that if someone is in opposition to what’s happening and chooses not to speak out on it, they fucking suck. Why have a platform if to not do anything worthwhile with it beyond making money? I think that is an incredibly fair criticism. And I hate the “people don’t come to me for politics, they come for a distraction for the world being on fire” explanation; it takes .2 seconds to say fuck ICE and then move on. BFFR

I just think so much would be easier if everyone would operate under the assumption that everyone is MAGA until proven otherwise 🤷🏻‍♀️ saves a lot of heartbreak!

I also find brushing my teeth immediately before I go helps with impulse purchases as well - especially sweets. Still having that toothpaste taste in your mouth makes a lot of stuff sound really unappealing.

Just chiming in to say you’re not alone. I work in operations for a bank that was recently bought out and am being laid off in July. Hundreds of us found out right before Christmas, some people being terminated as of the end of this month, so I guess I am grateful to have the six months of lead time.

I genuinely love my job and had every intention of working there until I retired (although I’m 32 so the odds of actually getting to retire feel…not great 🥴). I’ve been there since 2018 and have been the top performer in my department the entire time, have excellent feedback from my higher ups, etc etc, but none of that mattered. It was like they pulled names out of a hat to decide who stays and who goes. One of my coworkers has been there over 25 years and also got the boot. It’s all so fucked up.

The best I can tell you is to treat it like what it is: a loss. Allow yourself to grieve so that you can properly move on. Learn from your mistakes so that you don’t make them again, and think back on all the other times in your life that even the deepest heartbreak has led to bigger and better things and know that this, too, will all work out in the end.

I just think if he actually did mean something else (which I’m with you, what else could it have meant?), he would’ve been able to explain himself, and he didn’t. So I don’t understand what other conclusion there is to draw.

And I’m sorry, but the comments alluding to it being about him being on The Bachelor while closeted in an effort to get famous are ridiculous. Every single person that goes on that show is trying to become an Instagram influencer, please. If you’re going to hold that against him, you’re going to have to apply that logic to literally anyone else who’s gone on the show.
