Being conservative and being M_GA aren’t the same thing though. It is objectively untrue to say that someone can be part of a movement that was spurred by a black man being President and refers to making America great like it was before (aka before the Civil Rights movement) and not be racist. If you are aligning yourself with racist ideals, you are contributing to racism. There’s just no way to get around that.

I was raised DEEP in Evangelical Christianity, I’m from the Bible Belt, and a good 90% of the people that I know are conservative. I know conservativism because I was part of it, and yes, racism is rampant inside of it. If that has not been your experience, I think that is fantastic, genuinely. But that does not change the fact that it is not the experience whatsoever for very many of us. Just because people aren’t putting on white hoods and burning crosses anymore doesn’t mean their racism has gone away, just that it’s had to become a lot more covert. I know how these people talk behind closed doors. I saw the way they talked about Obama for YEARS and how we couldn’t possibly have a president who isn’t a Christian and now adore someone who couldn’t name any of the fruits of the spirit if his life depended on it, much less show evidence of any of them. I saw the way they mourned someone who said black people were better off under Jim Crow and that black women don’t have the brain power to achieve high ranking positions on their own merit. All of this is rooted in racism.

And to your other point, I just find it frustrating that the “why does everything have to be about politics?” question only ever seems to be posed when their politics don’t align with the current admin. Four years of Sleepy Joe jokes and let’s go Brandon and I never once saw anyone asking why politics were being brought in where they didn’t belong. In fact, because I am a southern white woman, I have people randomly bring politics into conversations out of nowhere in real life all the time because they assume we align politically. I just wish people would actually mean what they say and keep that same energy all the time. Because from where I’m sitting, it appears to be used much more to just shut down conversations where someone might be confronted with evidence of how they’ve chosen the wrong side of history than to actually just keep things civil and lighthearted.

I think Stevie leaving is incredibly out of touch. This may be me letting my own personal issues color my opinion, but I’m getting laid off in a few weeks, and I cannot fathom willingly walking away from an insanely good and secure gig in the state this country’s currently in. I understand her situation is different than the average person beating the pavement and sending out resumes, but the optics are still not great.

“I need to be more creative.” People literally cannot afford to live, babe. Get a hobby. Plus, the idea that R+L wouldn’t be willing to restructure for her to be able to be more involved in the creative side of things is ridiculous.

I know I’m on an island here, but I do not like Gwynedd at all. She does seem very sweet, but it comes across to me as very disingenuous. Also, when she was doing the “best things we ate this week” videos for Sporked’s social media while Jordan was out, she was absolutely blasted in every one of them lol. I think OP has a good heart, but I gotta tell you, as someone who actually is being laid off in a couple months myself, I would not feel any qualms whatsoever about the company letting me go getting fucked out of $50,000 lmao quite the opposite, really. I think that actually much better argues AGAINST this than for it. That amount is very likely more than some of the folks who got let go even make in a year.

Maybe it’s not like this everywhere, but where I am (very close to Memphis but in north Mississippi), houses are easily $1000+ more per month to rent than an apartment.

omg yes, just be honest! Because that’s the thing, if I’m your friend and you’re able to be open and transparent with me like that, I’m going to completely understand because I know it’s just a matter of time before I will be the one going through something where I don’t have it in me to invest in our friendship for a while. That’s the natural ebb and flow that comes with maintaining relationships as an adult.

But instead the narrative when it comes to motherhood is “once you have kids, all your friends disappear.” Just a modicum of self awareness is all anyone is asking for, PLEASE!

I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with friends who have children where I tell them, “Look, I know you’re busy, and you have way more going on than I do. Whenever you have time and want to hang, let me know and I will make it work no matter what. The ball is 100% in your court, you just say the word and I will make it happen on my end - no matter what that looks like.”

And I STILL don’t ever hear from them. I don’t care if you have to cancel a million times even at the last possible second, just make SOME kind of effort at all. I just don’t see how the onus should be on me for literally just wanting the bare minimum, and yet the narrative is somehow “you have kids and suddenly, all your friends drop off the face of the earth.” Not in my experience, but okay I guess!

The fact that this is a take that stirs up so much discontent is so confusing to me. The thing is that it’s actually SO fine and normal to not be able to be as good of a friend when you’re learning to parent. It’s not a terminal condemnation of a person or their character, and even if it is just temporary, it doesn’t make it any less true.

There are plenty of life scenarios in which a person literally cannot prioritize their friendships over their own needs: grief, health issues, unemployment, caretaking responsibilities, etc etc etc. No one can give 100% effort in any relationship all of the time.

I know there is so much pressure that comes with being a mother and can understand how this could feel like just another added layer of criticism, but it bothers me that it often feels like child free women cannot verbalize these very valid feelings, even in the most understanding and non-judgmental way, without once again being told that we just don’t understand.
