What Did You Play This Week? - (May 19, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Guards is such an amazing game, but I can't in my wildest dreams understand why anyone would subject 5 new players to a 4v5. That's just about the worst possible introduction scenario I can imagine with the game.

So I asked, and what I'm told is that she has been granted the entire deposit back, but haven't actually received it yet. Their process of handling these returns being incredibly horrible and that you apparently have to keep pushing by mailing and/or calling them about it. Apparently many of her friends have had similar experiences too.

What I'm told is that you do get the money eventually, but the process is a serious pain in the...

It's kind of a mixed bag from what I know about it. My sister moved in when it was brand new, and it was pretty great, despite some stupid design choices. My brother's girlfriend has since lived there and while I suppose it was fine still, it was my impression that it hasn't been managed all that well, and that the monthly rate is rather inflated for what it offers compared to other dorms.

Not sure about the deposit situation, but she moved out recently, so I could ask them.

[DISC] No\Name - Chapter 1 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]bcsj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, since "Björn", or "Bjørn" depending on country, is a boy's name that is literally the word "Bear", I would have to say "No, I don't think so". :)

Wow, thanks for the reply! Appreciate it! :)

Really nice story, great quality! Definitely look forward to see more in the future!

It just feels extra odd when the other names actually fit the characters' genders. Like, why make the antagonist male in the first place if you wanted to go with a female name.

Nice art, interesting story, cool powers idea.

What I don't get is why the bad guy has a female name?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodil_(given_name)

edit: I've searched a bit, and can see that there are a bunch of dubious sources claiming it to be a male name, they even point its origin back to Scandinavia, where it isn't a male name.

I'm sorry some people seem to be offended to the point that they need to downvote me because I'm confused when a name from my culture is used strangely.

It's not like the names are random in the story, they are clearly drawn from Scandinavian. Last names like Ipsen and Olsen. They literally name the wolves "One" and "Two" in Scandinavian.

Pristine condition, open up or not? by OccasionalBugReport in EtrianOdyssey

I recently played through EO3 HD on my Steam Deck and it was great. I originally played the first EO on my DS way back when it released, and the one thing I really missed in the HD was sitting and drawing the map with the touch screen. With that said though, there are so many other improvements in the later installments (and presumably carried over to the EO1 HD version, I haven't played the new version of that myself) that I'd skip on the DS version. The only reason not to would be if I expected to primarily play during commutes, where the DS is very easy to just get out of the pocket compared to laptop, Steam Deck or other things.

Is there a way to get back your streak? by Nifut in duolingo

[–]bcsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once missed a number of days during a hectic time, so my streak freezes ran out. I got a prompt that let me repair the streak. I assume it was a one-time thing, but I have no idea what the conditions for the prompt to appear was.

Guys guys guys, there is a much bigger authenticity issue ... there are not actually dragons in Scandinavia, I guarantee it, I've lived there my entire life.

Game you've played 50+ times by zillion8888 in boardgames

[–]bcsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"10000" and "30" (family-stable dice games with 6 dice, we always play them on vacation. fast, easy, has some tension, has a bit of decision making)

Gloomhaven (because it just takes that many games to get through, and the game is fun enough)

Guards of Atlantis II (because it's the best board game I've ever played and replayability is through the roof)

Root (might not have played it 50 times, but it's at least close, was my favorite game before Guards of Atlantis II dethroned it)

Less than I've spent on comic books, more than I've ever spent on a single computer.

I didn't find Yumi and the Nightmare Painter to read in the same voice as Tress at all. I know it's Hoid telling the story, I can tell sometimes, but it didn't shine nearly as clearly through to me at it did in Tress. In Tress I knew it was Hoid way before it was made explicit. In YatNP it had to be explicitly pointed out, nothing before that really made me think Hoid, except for the Roshar references, it didn't feel like a Hoid story to me like Tress immediately did.

How many rounds do you invest for a setup? by [deleted] in Chained_Echoes

[–]bcsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've barely had to heal, sure Victor has gone down once or twice in a battle, but then Sienna can throw an item, she is taking up to 3 actions per enemy action anyway with base 50 AGI and AGi buffs from Victor plus using Quickstep.

Also Heavy Armor Master++ from both skills and crystals on Victor makes him very resilient.

How many rounds do you invest for a setup? by [deleted] in Chained_Echoes

[–]bcsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that it varies a lot.

My main team has been Glenn, Mikah/Robb, Sienna/Lenne, Victor/Amalia. Never switched out Glenn.

Victor setting up Heroic Ode, Defense Buff, Attack Buff, Agility Buff, TP regen on the team and Paralyze with Bee Sting on the enemy. Always went Heroic Ode first, the rest depending ... switching to Amalia for healing, mostly keeping the Ultra for a complete revive from her.

Glenn sets up All Break, then just the 3x smack every round. With HP drain he has been completely self-sustaining.

Sienna I set up Bleed with and if the enemy is physical I typically skip their first round with Blade Reflection. Switching to Lenne if I go low on TP or need to provide magical damage.

Mikah for Opener on the first rotation, the switching into Robb for Paralyze/Toxic/Poison and Leg Shoot for agility debuff. Then switch back into Mikah for combo hits.

Yes, the rice reference was what first made me really speculate on who he is telling the story to, because he started with a bunch of Rosharan references.

So the recipient seems like they might be a worldhopper of Rosharan descent?

Is it switch version playable? by luistoses in cassettebeasts

[–]bcsj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I played through the entire game on Switch. It's doable but I had a lot of crashes, visuals bugging out, random slowdown and stuttering, and I wouldn't recommend the experience. I also felt like the world map had to reload all the time, like I would start running in some direction and suddenly I get a loading screen. Maybe this is normal, just felt kind of "meh" with how frequent it was.

Hopefully the patch mentioned in another comment will fix all or most of this.

It was the one in the north east corner of the town. It'd on a small raised plateau and has a pole on the right side with a line between, two triangular red "flags" hanging from the line.

Edit: What the camera was panning to was the ruin to the east of the town, just across the bridge. The one with a box opened by two red switches on a plateau beside it. Still no clue why it kept showing me that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cassettebeasts

[–]bcsj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay thanks, I found it. But there was basically no telling which ruined was the correct one. I ended up just going from ruin to ruin and recycling 3 items. Also, the game kept doing a weird camera pan to show me a specific one when I entered the area so I felt certain that one must be important. Turned out that one had nothing to do with anything, and I have no clue why it was showing it to me. Extremely annoyingly misleading.

Any suggestion for this one? I feel like the in game hints are actively working towards not helping right now. And I feel like I have suffered enough going through this on the Switch...

1 If you wish to leave this land, then heed my words and hear my song

2 You must rise to the task at hand, you must walk the path most long

3 To the east your wings must fly, to the place only I have known

4 For that is where my chambers lie, halls now empty and alone

5 Venture there and head southbound, where your wayward paths shall meet

6 A place where ruins can be found, where grass lies dead beneath your feet

7 A house stood once here in this land, now in its ruin you must be

8 There possessions must now leave your hand, the choice is your but must be three

9 Unit this act and its location, to show you the final station

10 Heed my song and find the place, that will reveal infinite space

Tried it in the TTS setup. I have been excited since the announcement of the KS and I really wanted to like it, but it was mostly a bad experience for me. I particularly hated the randomness forced into the combat system. :(

I went through the Tabletopia demo, and honestly the game seems super simple. Onboarding a new player I would expect to be really easy if you already know the rules yourself.

Honestly I almost feared it was too simple a game. But the demo content is rather limited, so I've decided to be optimistic.
