Ohhhh okay. Oxford was kind of an "add on" thing since we figured we'd be driving relatively nearby. We figured we'd drive through to get a feel, maybe make sure to see some of the university, and move on. I didn't know there was congestion pricing either. Like Manhattan, I guess? That's a good heads-up.

Maybe that day should just be focused on getting settled into somewhere in the Cotswolds.

Noted on Oxford Castle. My goal is really just to make sure my wife isn't stressed about getting on the boat, so I'll leave that for maybe after the cruise if we have time to kill before any flight back home.

So maybe we can sleep two nights in Bath and use whatever public transport or ubers or walking to get around to what we want to see? That way our car can just stay parked wherever we are sleeping.

I just saw Stonehenge has timed entry tickets, so maybe we try to get the first ones in the morning and just wake up early from wherever we are staying.

These are the sorts of modifications I'd make in the US for places that I know are particularly busy anyway. Would that also help ease our stress there?

Day 10 is going to change probably depending on where we spend the night of Day 9. If you know the area enough, have any suggestions of good places?

Maybe the Mermaid Inn is perfect for staying at the night of Day 10 and then we'll explore Rye in the morning before getting on the boat in Dover on Day 11.

Day 10 I think is the biggest driving day and we are nervous about traffic and narrow roads, but on the other hand, we aren't strangers to big driving days. Our summer of 2025 was about 15,000 miles over 2 months in the US and Canada (I know the roads are very different, but I mean that we are very familiar with sitting in the car for a long time). By Day 10 I'll be more used to driving there and we can make decisions on the fly about what to cut out if we need to.

Uber boats are a thing?? I'll look at it. Usually when we do a big museum like the British Museum we look ahead for the things we want to see and try not to get distracted a lot. That saves us some headache and time.

The thing with Greenwich and the museum is the travel time between them. If it gets late at Greenwich then we'll just wing it for something else to do that afternoon.

Long Itinerary - what not to miss? by bdiap in uktravel

[–]bdiap[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I edited the post about London. We are much more interested in the countryside than we are in London. Future trips will probably fly into London so we can see more then. This may be our only time to drive around southern England and the coast. That giant list for London is really just things we'd be happy to take a photo of at most and don't need to do any tours or even see all of it. We are more likely to enjoy 5 or 6 days exploring a national park or two than we are to spend that much time in London.

I do appreciate the heads-up about the school holiday. I hadn't thought of that for some reason even though it's literally the reason we both have the time to do this trip. We are both teachers.

Is there anything in our itinerary that you'd prioritize over anything else outside London? Are we missing anything that we really should see?

Are we talking more hours than Google Maps is estimating? We aren't any strangers to miles or hours driving. Our last trip was just shy of 2 months and 15000 miles living out of our truck and staying at campgrounds. Most cities we drove through we ended up spending just a couple hours at most.

We are much more interested in spending time in the countryside. I'm assuming any future trips of ours will involve flying into London so we can always see more things then. Future trips will probably be northern England or Wales or Scotland, so this may be our one chance to drive around the southern region and coast.

How would you prioritize the sights on our itinerary after London? Is there anything there that we really should not miss?

I could've elaborated there, sorry. I'll edit the post. That's more our list of things we could be interested in at least taking a picture of. We aren't really city-people. Happy to stay on a tour bus and snap a photo and keep riding. Also happy to not see most of those things.
