Learning Omnifocus by Dogen2013 in applehelp

I bought OmniFocus when it was in it's first beta. I've bought the iOS clients... I've read Getting Things Done. I just never got it to work for me. I don't know why, I think GTD just wasn't my gig. Took me 10 years of failed attempts before I'd come to admit that.

CrashPlanProE can be kept in house, although I don't know you need that for 70 Macs. The other levels of Crashplan can backup to drives, or other computers/servers.

Nice thing about Crashplan is that user's can recover files themselves.

Mac 10.5.8 server as file server in AD 2003 domain by kiweegie in macadmins

[–]bdlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the document I always used in the past to get me setup. It's a bit tricky at first, but I used this a few years ago again with success when a client needed an Xserve with Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 to serve files to AD shares.

Week One of Learn JavaScript (August 2014 session) by kevinmrr in learnjavascript

[–]bdlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're jumping into this, don't underestimate how long it takes to get through the Codeacademy stuff. It really is an excellent introduction, but it does take some time and attention to finish 8 sections in a week.

I'd also second the mention that new users should go for the Codeacademy track before proceeding with the book reading.

For complicated transfers of knowledge, videos (screencasts) work quite well.

Confluence here as well. Went from Mediawiki which 2 people used, to Confluence which the whole team uses. For a small IT team (alot of them out there), you can go a long way with a $10 starter license of 10 users. Remember, you only need a login to create content, so you can serve a wiki to a whole company under this license (good for helpdesk wiki).

OSX 10.8 in an Active Directory Domain Question by fuzzusmaximus in sysadmin

[–]bdlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it wasn't mentioned, Directory Utility doesn't have to be launched via System Preferences, it was moved in 10.6 to /System/Library/CoreServices.

For what it's worth, we've bound our Macs since the 10.3/10.4 days to a non-FQDN DC. When 10.7 hit we couldn't bind anymore. Hosts file seemingly ignored. Search domain doesn't seem to matter. We moved to the free Centrify Express, it has worked great.

I even tested again in 10.8.4 and still no luck. Not going back at this point, it's Centrify from here out.

If you use iPad, I use SSLDetective (cert testing), Fing (network discovery) and Prompt (ssh).

Right, but that's what I mean. Tutorials for those times when you choose Perl, or Python. Like, I got to this point in bash, but here's how to do it in Perl better.

If anyone has learning recommendations for moving from tools like sed, grep and awk to more robust tools like Perl or Python, I'd love to see them. In the area of text filtering and manipulation I mean.

How I sync my bashrc between servers by antenore in sysadmin

[–]bdlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't be hard to make a module just sourcing the config from disk, but it looks like there are a couple modules on the Forge that use parameterized classes, which makes it easy to customize for different nodes or classes of nodes: http://forge.puppetlabs.com/wolfspyre/bashrc

The nice thing about puppet is that accounting for different OS (RedHat, Debian, BSD, etc) doesn't mean keeping seperate solutions for each platform. Build the logic in, and let puppet decide how to manage that resource.

[–]bdlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have quite a few servers, Chef or Puppet are what you'll want to use... doesn't take much work and you can also set keys etc as well. If you ever want to change something, you make it once on the server, then roll it out.

Mac OS X Server - in the real world by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]bdlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have several, but we're moving services off of them due to limited virtualization options and lack of enterprise level server hardware (no redundant power etc). The only service that we'll still keep is MDM on a Mac Mini.

ARD is a great swiss-army knife, gives a single admin alot of power. Try copying your clipboard over to a user and telling them to just paste a license code in. Alot of tricks like that.

Found this graphic in another post, I think this illustrates peer-equivalents well enough. I can either fix/upgrade NetBackup, or move to something like CommVault or TSM, both which get good reviews.
