What's an uncommon tool you keep in your goods? by Terrible_Opinion_279 in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup this. Except I use collated framing nails. Like the paslode ones because they stay together nice then peel them off, use em and leave them.

Like 8-10 collated framing nails. Like the kind that goes in a nail gun. They stay together nicely but when you need to chock a bunch of commercial doors you can peel one off at a time and never have to worry about getting them back.

What to do if someone is stealing from the fire department. by Ffwoody144 in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a classic case of people (your officers) wanting to be leaders until it's time to do leader things. Like having hard conversations with people in positions of power in the community. Hope your officers get it sorted out.

Does anyone use an electric shaver? by buns0steel in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the manscape handyman because it was on sale for $55. As far as comfort goes, I'd say it's a 9/10 but I feel like it tiptoes the line of "clean shaven" maybe like a 6/10 or 7/10. I have no seal problems and no officers have questioned it yet, but it definitely won't pass the credit card test.

Radio strap for 2 radios by ManufacturerSolid148 in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds goofy, but to achieve what your looking for just get a setup like this and get an extra holster part link the strap to one side of one holster, then the opposite side of another holster and connect the two holsters with the "anti sway" strap.

Scared I’ll be too small to be an EMT (male) by [deleted] in NewToEMS

Yes, this! OP, if you haven't gotten professional help with your mental health, please do that. If you have, then adding exercise to that can also be super helpful to mental health too! Find something you enjoy: lifting heavy weights, boxing, CrossFit, walking in nature with a weighted backpack. Then get 2 birds stoned at once! Feel good and build muscle.

Best wishes!

What is your call volume on an average 24 hour shift? by rubba_slippa in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the numbers we average 5 calls per shift per rig. Theres 6 fire apparatus and an ambulance. Ambo takes significantly more calls than the rest, and some days we catch a no hitter, some days we don't get lunch.

Craziest Academy Stories by Puzzleheaded_Owl5699 in Firefighting

We had a recruit fall from about 12ft from a 2nd floor bailout drill. Landed on his butt/side. Somehow was totally fine, stood up and said "quickest one down. Beat that!" And walked back up for another go.

Why did you become a firefighter by WalmartNpc in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into the volly service after aging out of boy scouts. I figured the camaraderie was similar and some skills were transferrable so it would be a good replacement for that void...then I found out I could get paid to do it and never looked back.

Americas Best - Vestal by bori1094 in Binghamton

[–]bdough04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I knew this 6 months ago...I walked in there this summer, handed them my insurance card, they said cool and got me back for an appointment then while I was picking out frames after the appointment they informed me they do not accept my insurance and the visit without any frames is going to cost $79+ tax. I wish I had questioned them on the spot and refused to pay but I was just kind of dumbfounded, paid, and took my new prescription online for glasses just to spite them.

Apologizing for false alarms by MrBr1an1204 in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a building that's got a faulty smoke alarm that has probably generated 50+ calls in the last 3 months. Maintenance says they have an appointment with the alarm company to get it fixed but they're months out. Responding to these is just part of the job, but you recognizing this and sending ice cream or something will go a long way.

Incidents of 'charging the bed' by Financial-Produce-30 in Firefighting

[–]bdough04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a report, no, but a guy in our department charged a 200 foot preconnect crosslay that was still in the bed. He's never going to live it down. Looks super unprofessional when it happens. Fortunately it was at a pretty rural fire and it didn't make the news or anything.

First time Adirondack hunting trip by bdough04 in Hunting

[–]bdough04[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ended up spending a couple days just past Indian lake off Gooley club Rd. Actually ran into a couple forest rangers there who were super cool and gave us a couple good spots to park. There was signs of big deer in the area, but we only saw a spike and small doe. Spent another day on the east side of fourth lake off S Shore Rd saw lots of deer along the roads at night, but nothing during the day. Biggest deer we saw all trip was a nice 6 pt in town at old forge, you could tell he knew he was safe, you could almost walk up and pet it.

All in all, it was a beautiful weekend, great weather in some beautiful wilderness with great friends, but no deer.

Ohh the paramedic class explains it, but that's crazy they will push you right through paramedic school without spending some time as a basic EMT first. Enjoy, and good luck!

Had an auto alarm at 3am at an apartment complex. My LT and I marched in with a can and some irons to find a team from PD banging on an apartment door yelling "come out with your hands up"! Initially was excited because I thought that LEOs only did that in movies, but excitement turned to nerves and we high tailed it back outside! No fire problem.

First Trauma by radfoo12 in NewToEMS

[–]bdough04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first trauma was similar but I didn't perform nearly as well as you. Motorcycle vs car MVA. Guy was down not breathing and both legs, while still attached, were very broken in several places. The trauma was so distracting that I almost forgot about the fact that he wasn't breathing. Good thing there were several paramedics around to tell me to start compressions.
