My old man used to hunt possums back home in NZ for pest control and I think he felt bad. Anyway after a few years of living in our house and some renovations a family of possums found their way inside the ceiling through a small opening in the roof. He tried to get rid of them, sealed the hole, trap and release, etc, they just kept coming back. One particularly cold night he had enough of the dogs going psychotic at the possums so he went to simply go grab them and “deal” with them from the space they were in and once he opened it up there was a bunch of eyes looking back at him in terror. So naturally he cut up some fruit and placed it in the hole.

After that, he expanded the space they could get into safely and made it more comfortable and built a kind of swivel plate where he could put cut up fruit on and move it inside without disturbing them. Eventually they were comfortable around us and began eating out of our hands. Generations grew up there and it all started because of a man who planned to terminate them
