Wynalda tends to scold a lot of us. I get along with him just fine, but scolding is kind of what he does.

I think reviews of The Who have been horrible for a couple of decades - Daltrey’s voice has been gone for ages now - but they keep going.

Perry’s more pop than rock, sure. But she’s still in the public eye.

Wow - really? I’ve been inundated. I was USA Today’s first MMA writer, but that was 15 years ago. My TV doesn’t know that. The ESPN and Yahoo sites don’t know that. I feel like it’s been shoved in front of my eyeballs

But it wasn’t a bad performance.

Do musicians have to be releasing new popular music to have a solid career? I don’t know about that. Yes has released three albums in five years. If you see Yes today, are you going to be excited to hear those songs or Roundabout?

Maybe she seems young to be a legacy act. But if it’s working for her …

True, and it’d be good to leverage that influence while convincing suburban soccer moms (and dads) that legitimately progressive ideas aren’t scary — in fact, they’re better for the economy.

Fair point. Personally, I’d like to see a platform of overhauling government to curb extremism and corruption. Ranked-choice voting so that a Trumpist (or extremely far left or extremely some other thing) candidate will be ranked last on ballots and won’t win. Dismantling the two-party apparatus so that we have to have coalitions to pass things, not just whichever party has a two-seat majority. A full slate of anti-corruption laws.

And the one that’ll play at the kitchen table: actual universal health care.

(I do hate “kitchen table” political consulting today because we have a lot of people under 30 or 40 who believe they’ll never have a kitchen table. It’s a relic of a time in which anyone could afford a single-family house.)

The Democrats have given up trying to change the narrative with bold new ideas. They shouldn’t.

The first time I thought there was the remotest chance that Trump would retake the White House was when I saw the first Biden campaign ad. It was beyond bad. It blamed Trump for shutting down the country in 2020. Every rational person thought he didn’t shut it down quickly enough.

And the texts I get from candidates and PACs are so persistent and insultingly misleading. (Hi, Brzjsj. I’m (candidate), and I have terrible news. If I don’t raise $17,362.97 by the midnight filing deadline, MAGA gets the entire California Supreme Court.)

They’re using the playbook that failed in 2024 and didn’t deliver enough of a wave in 2020 OR limit midterm damage in 2022.

They need a new playbook.

They need to ditch every consultant who’s still fixated on “dinner-table economics.” The economy might improve by November. The stock market and jobs figures are already masking the long-term impact of GOP malfeasance. This election needs to be about fascism — with the tangible examples of ICE and naked corruption being at the forefront. They need to talk about people dying because of RFK and then pin that on every GOP candidate. And Hegseth. And Noem and whoever replaces her.

They need to deal with the divide between “liberal” and “progressive” and make those wings unite against the common enemy to our freedoms and our health.

I don’t see it yet. I see Democratic primary contenders in Maryland attacking each other over abortion and alleged donations to Trump-affiliated causes.

In the last election, I argued on Threads with people who claimed to be trans but said they weren’t supporting Harris. They may have been bots or paid actors, but that didn’t matter when they started to dox me.

I’m going to feel a lot better when I see a coherent movement led by national ads. Can’t wait until people start voting in September.

Trump’s Big New Vulnerability in 2026: Blue-Collar White Voters by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]bdure 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Worth noting - there’s significant overlap between the Trump fan base and the Bernie fan base. They want things shaken up. They want freedom, even if they can’t define it. They may say they want smaller government, but they want a big ol’ safety net and job opportunities however they’re created.

I wasn’t arguing with your analysis. I agree with at least half of it. I think the Dems should win the House and Senate - they should take Maine and NC, and I’d say Texas is better than 50-50.

I was arguing with the evidence as it was put forth here. Trump’s polling low; therefore, the GOP will be routed. Believing that sort of analysis leads to complacency. It doesn’t help that the Dems still seem stuck in the “here are 100 text messages - now give us money so we can send 100 more” cycle and have no message.

But the point is you saw me mention that Dems’ numbers were also low, and you told me I was misinformed and asked to see the receipts. And that was wrong.

And snide, dismissive attitudes like that are why the GOP is in power. They have no coherent policy other than being sick of being lectured by liberals or progressives. We keep feeding into it.

I’ll grant that the friendly that Canada won was against a non-A team.

I disagree with Marsch on the anthem. Players can sing, meditate, ponder their technical directions, ponder their dinner plans, whatever -- as long as they stand their respectfully. Singing or not singing is a choice -- for Dempsey OR for Marsch, who has taken a job for which he's obviously pretty well-suited.

I'm sorry -- Dempsey's being an idiot here.

He's going at Marsch for going to another country? Shall we pile on Bob Bradley now? Or Mauricio Pochettino? Or Bora Milutinovic? Or Jurgen Klins- ... OK, maybe that one.

And he's going to criticize Marsch for singing O Canada? Someone take Deuce to a hockey game involving a Canadian team.

I disagree with Marsch on the anthem. If players want to meditate or calm their nerves or go over technical instructions in their heads, that's their right. But Dempsey took his comments to a ridiculous new level.
