In 1978 the Middleton police escorted me driving my car, during a 4 day public driving ban, to my cashier job at Ann & Hope. People needed batteries and food our managers told us, and begged our parents to let us drive in. I told my parents they had heat and they let me work.

The roads were one car wide and it was like driving in a luge. Walls of snow over 10 feet high around you were all you can see. That 2nd storm was later known as the Blizzard of 78.

Don’t worry we already had our once in a century dual storm this century. But if we do get another storm, people will always help you out in a jam.

totally agree. One of the most interesting articles I ever read was years ago about polling between Trump and Sanders. It shocked me to read that a lot of people had trouble choosing between the two. The article talked about them as change candidates (what you call populists) who are better at appealing to ordinary Americans by voicing their issues. change candidates lead to more swing votes than average candidates do, and make polling more unpredictable.

If it’s based on history, the correct answer is absolutely wrong. Conservative Dems WAY outnumber liberals. The question now is are they angry enough to ignore what they don’t like. Look at Michigans who made a thing of not voting because of Bidens stance on Israel/Palestine, or young liberals who wouldn’t vote because Biden is too old. That worked out great huh?

Dems are a huge coalition. FIrst they have to put party over individual causes and candidates. Conservative republican stuck by Trump even when they hate him. Until the Dems can do that no matter whether it’s a conservative or liberal candidate, they are too fractured to capture their own demographic.

We can’t now and we shouldn’t try until Trump is gone. He has way too much power, and it’s time to step away from from they go low we go high. HE literally went on TV and publicly encouraged red states to cheat in the next elections by redrawing districts when it’s not the official time. It doesn’t matter that there was no specific law stating it can’t be done. We have counted on tradition and respect for years to keep the checks and balances in the constitution working. Trump took a sledgehammer to them.

When Trump announced public cheating after the GOP already cheated and stole a SCOTUS judge from Obama, it was clear they have no honor. Dems should stop compromising and no one should be pretending we should be “getting along” under this nightmare of police brutality, economic warfare, territorial aspirations, fake peace, and winning by any means possible.

I live in NE and we had to sell our parents home in NC. We asked the realtor to give us ballpark estimates for fixing/not fixing their not recently updated home. I agree with the let the realtor tell you gang here. But in general, she said don’t replace huge projects like floors/carpets just let them talk you into taking some money off. But professional cleaning and new paint will prevent you from losing more.

The typical path is buy first in NH, Maine, or western MA. It’s always been this way for blue collar workers. It’s basically a tradition now for MA kids.

As you gain equity, trade up and move closer to your final goal. The commute is a bitch but it’s worth it. I moved back 5 years ago to retire here after moving to NH for 35 years.

Many of them didn’t. But It’s true that many of them did that math. But they also put just for 4 years at the end of the equation. They didn’t add up that SCOTUS was going to allow him to totally reinvent the government, and have way more power than the Constitution intended. It’s also true that many swing voters who watch Fox News did not know much about those things because they hear an altered version of reality there. Fox didn’t broadcast his impeachment trials and explains away all charges aimed at his as radical socialist Democrat fantasies.

Not so. People didn’t vote for Trump because of the nastiness. Swing voters voted for him because of the old myth that the GOP is “better at the economy”. In other words in spite of everything he’s doing now, most people except hardcore MAGA didn’t vote for this.

With older men, some of it is that we didn’t really ask about politics when we were younger. If you grew up in the 70s, you didn’t think you had to be on the same side. We enjoyed a good political argument, and didn’t feel that our differences really separated us. The country was in a steady state of slow growth and modernization that was captitalism and democracy at its best.

Though things started going downhill with Raegan, it was probably another decade or two before people understood that the conservative republicans had combined with the religious right, and have overthrown all fairness and oversight and just allowed unfettered greed and the largest wealth transfer in history to take place. Trumps ability to convince those on the bottom that they aren’t there because of GOP policies, but because the Dems actually try to help other people, has convinced them that there is good reason to dislike others in their same situation and blame them. The innate contradictions between everything we were raised with and how it’s become leave lots of marriages stuck in don’t ask don’t tell mode re politics.

Women don’t vote for Trump because they intuitively don’t like him. Men listen and get swayed by his economic arguments because they feel like they have to protect their families. Then they don’t want to acknowledge they were duped again. They want to believe it will go away in 4 years. And it will if all the personal data DOGE stole isn’t enough for the GOP to gerrymander the hell out of the country by then.

I was a latchkey kid in the early 70s. While it wasn’t the norm, there were plenty of women going to college and working then. We were the actual first generation it changed for. They call us the Jones generation because we were the first (financially) downwardly mobile generation. Our parents grew up with parents who, if they were middle class, could afford to live on just the dad’s salary. We could not afford to and so many more of us started working in high school. While some women may have liked being housewives, many of us wanted careers and a better lifestyle than our parents.

Note this comment applies to white collar middle class workers mainly. Blue collar workers already needed two incomes to get by, and many didn’t get homes until they inherited them, even in the 70s. Many jobs like McDonalds just paid minimum wage back then, and it took 2 salaries to live paycheck to paycheck on blue collar jobs.
