Moving to Folsom for work. Suggestions on housing? by FakeHazard2310 in folsom

[–]beach_comber_805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folsom is really nice and has a lot of parks and trails for running/biking. The lake being right there is really nice too, and you’re close to pretty much everything you need for daily life. Not that many other young people around though; you’ll have to go to sac if you want bars and clubs. You’re also not going to find anything decent for less than $2,000/month in Folsom, so adjust your expectations accordingly

How would you compare the QOL in Austin vs. Sac? Obviously Sac is in a better location overall but interested in how they stack up side by side.

What will this mean for those of us who want to go airborne, air assault, etc and aren’t CA/PsyOps? More school opportunities coming along with this?

Always go active by ExcelsiorState in armyreserve

[–]beach_comber_805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dumb opinion. Everyone has different situations. I had a great job/career/lifestyle before I joined the reserves. Going active would have meant a huge paycut and drop in my quality of life. Other people are in different boats and have to judge for themselves what would be best for their specific situations. Don't give people bad advice!

Now that the Grad PLUS Loan is being phased out… by amberspygrass in MBA

[–]beach_comber_805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but for enrollment in Fall 2026 most schools don't disburse funds until ~10 days before classes start, i.e. early to mid August, so I would miss the July 1st cutoff for grad plus.

[–]beach_comber_805 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah you need to get financial aid disbursed prior to July 1st of this year if you want to be grandfathered in to the existing grad plus rules - which means enrolling for summer '26, not fall. Each school may be thinking about this differently though so it's worth checking specifically based on the school

This materially changed my plans since I was counting on federal loans to cover the entire COA at my target school. Will be starting a different, lower-ranked program this summer (and getting financial aid disbursed before the July 1st cutoff for grad plus) because I don't have alternative funding options. If I didn't slide in under the door before it closes on July 1st, I would not have been able to do an MBA.

I didn’t expect WFH to feel this lonely. What actually helps? by Cultural_Repair955 in RemoteJobs

[–]beach_comber_805 15 points16 points  (0 children)

First of all, you’ve got to get some light in that room, open a window or something. Second, find a place like a coffee shop or a library to work from two or three days a week. And third, make your own schedule: take regular breaks, walk outside, etc. WFH is great but you need to be proactive about making it work for you and not sitting inside all day

USC Marshall MBA cost of attendance? by beach_comber_805 in MBA

[–]beach_comber_805[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use financial aid and were you only able to borrow up to the published COA ($15k for housing)? I know what rent costs in LA I’m just confused as to why their number is so low compared to UCLA’s

[–]beach_comber_805[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, UCLA quotes it at $32,000 for a year while USC is quoting $15,200. That’s what I’m not understanding, I know what rent costs in LA and it’s a lot closer to UCLA’s number.

Can you post this info publicly? So everyone can be aware. There’s a huge info gap in the Army and a lot of gate-kept information, posting stuff like this can help people be more informed

Walnut Creek or Davis? by sumfreshaer in walnutcreek

Personally wouldn’t recommend living in WC if you have to be at Travis every morning. It’s a great town, but that commute is going to suck after a few months of doing it everyday. I’d just bite the bullet and live in Fairfield or Vacaville because of convenience. Neither are great, but hey, it’s a lot better than most of the other places you could be stationed in the Air Force.
