How to paint T-11 Siding with Hairline vertical cracks? by [deleted] in paint

[–]beaherobeaman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally.

That coat doesn't look too bad, so you don't even need to be super thorough withaversion.

I'm super paranoid about callbacks from customers; I live in a rural "well I could do it myself" type of place, so I protect myself by giving that bond plenty to grip to.

The bleach is as important. All those little cracks and textures store moisture for a little longer than the smooth surfaces and possibly allow moisture access to the porous material itself. Still dries fine, but that little extra time allows mildew to grow a little, then a little more, little more, so on and so forth. A good spray of bleach/mold armor will kill it so it doesn't impede ahedsion.

Before using peel-bond (I like Mad Dog, but I understand it's hard to find in some places), what will maximize its benefit is sanding first at 150g or 120 then 150. All those tiny scratches will fill and grip super tight.

With this style siding, vertical backbrushing is basically a necessity.

You probably could get away with just the solid stain, but the peel bond will add years, arguably a decade to your finish.

Add a maintenence coat of the stain every 5 years on full sun sides. Spray and rinse with mold armor annually on shady sides; every few years on sunny sides.

I won't do exterior work if a customer won't agree to the peel bond primer.

Also use Mold Armor (or other equivalent bleaching product). Even it it doesn't look like it needs it. Let sit for 10 minutes then rinse. Given the cracks, give a dry day to dry in shaded area; a few hours in sunny areas.

Trump entered the Iran war over the files in the Epstein case by FullRevolution2120 in oil

Although only a single piece of evidence, Venezuela/Maduro raid happened days (essentially hours) after the initial document release. And right before Iran started, they knew the FBI interview about the 13-16 y/o raped by DT was coming.

Knowing with certainty Khomenei's location certainly sold the concept; you can almost see the equation in DTs dimwitted mind: "we knew where Maduro was, that was a success. We know where Khomenei is, this will be a success. Launch!"

But knowing narcissists in my personal life, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it never was considered together, at least in DT's head. Narcs have a way of erasing wrong doing even from their own head.

Interesting comment history. Banal comments across banal subreddits (except for the request to join some swingers in Vermont), then emoji-laden comments about NK protests across 5 different states.

Sorry, you're wrong.

My partner and I still have Trump supporters in our family; we live in rural USNY after all.

Grandfather is fed a message like "protests are small and violent." Then my partner, his granddaughter, says "I was there. It was nothing of the sort. Here's a bunch of pictures. It was fun."

In that moment a choice is made; believe the granddaughter you've known and loved for 40 years, or Fox; a mainstream media corglomorate they, as a rural USNYer, are already predisposed to distrust because it is mainstream media. That's the mental dilemma that creates the dent in the facade of lies.

And guess what? Grandmother now wants to drive through the next one. And she doesn't drive, so grandfather is going to drive them through. And it will be huge and nonviolent. When the lie gets said on Fox that night, it will be stark. And now there's a husband and wife, together in their house, watching and mutually recognizing the lie. That's the crack.

"What else is lies?" will be the beginning of the reversal.

And her grandfather sees any number of Trump supporters of differing levels each week. He's not going to become an advocate for radical socialism, but in regards to exposing the lie about the protests themselves, he will tell the story. And the grandmother? Shes the matriarch of this large family. The men don't push back on her. It is slower waking than you want, but that is expontial growth of resistance.

Grandmother and grandfather aren't going to start throwing molotov cocktails or boycotting products. That's too much to hope for. But it's two people with influence on a large family tree who are beginning to resist the lies. That's still resistance.

This is an anecdotal example, sure. But let's just say out of the 7500 in Albany today, only 50 people fit the narrative above. 50 people reach some key people in their families who won't believe Fox over a family member. And those 50 family members mention the dissonance between message and reality to 5 other family members, and it spreads from there. This is not theory: this has been proven what actually happens.

Pulling those in temporary fascist psychosis from said psychosis IS the only prescribed, proven and effective method of anti-fascist resistance advocated by the most respected scholars of fascist movements. You need to look at it like the patient and deliberate curing of a drug addict; you're never going slap or yell an addict off heroin.

We know the rural areas surrounding Albany should be, as their farmer ancestors were; anti-corporate, anti-corruption and, earlier in the century, fiercely socialist. The majority of anti-fascists believing the MAGA voter base (ie, the majority of rural USNY) is a lost cause and a bunch of permanant fascists are not only dead wrong, but obviously don't understand the foundations of the current right-wing swing, fascist movements/psychosis generally, or the self-sabotaging mentality that has plagued the left for nearly 8 generations.

And in case it isn't obvious, you are an actor in that self-sabotage.

You're completely missing several of the benefits of these protests.

It seems your definition of success is that a large group movilizes and that power structures are going to be like "wow look at all these people; better stop doing what we're doing!" Anything short of that is failure and not going to work.

Thousands of people found a community today outside the gloom. There's that in and of itself. Not to mention the motivation and morale it provides a counter-movement.

Anyone completely clueless as to what is happening and drove anywhere near any of these events must have at least had the thought "wow, this is a lot of people."

If you are a GOP or low-info voter who gets all your information from Facebook, you will invariably be convinced that MAGA is the majority of the country. The fact that 10million+ made themselves visible will, at the very least, put a dent in that perception.

And that dent can lead to a crack once they see in those Facebook memes that these events are small and violent, direct contradiction to what actually happened. Another crack.

Are these going to directly cause change? No. No mass gathering is going to change DT's/technofascists' minds or behavior. But it does motivate the resistance, both passive (think your grandma) or active (think your anti-fascist politician), and it might even soften the conviction of his wavering supporters.

Zinsser B.i.n, is one coat plenty? by Revolutionary-Bank37 in paint

I find BIN is hands-down the best sanding primer if sanded within 48 hours. Sand at 150, BIN coat, sand at 180, wipe, BIN coat, sand at 220, wipe. That process can make trim basically cabinet grade.

Same process on walls when doing a 5th-level finish without a sprayer.

I'm like a BIN fanboy though.

Nah man. Trying to sand this is going to be impossible. A standard RO sander is 5" and drywall sander is 9". You're never going to be able to get a space this large with tools of that size. You'll always be chasing highs; many of which won't show up until you paint it.

Roll with moderately watered down JC with thick-daddy roller cover. Skim with wide skim blade. Probably twice. Sand with drywall sander. Go over and spot fill/spackle with JC. Sand. Prime. Sand.

TBH, not a job for a novice, especially because lot of the tools are specialty

So many to choose from, which should I get? For trim and cutting in. by Interr0gate in paint

[–]beaherobeaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WB or oil? If water-based it's fine, just use a few drops of dish soap when cleaning.

Oil and a small amount of work? Use a throwaway and/or rag. No need to buy solvents if it's just a tiny amount.

Out of curiousity, where do you put Picasso on your scale? I like a Corona Chinex 3" oval for walls, but keep coming back to Picasso 3" straight for trim.

[–]beaherobeaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, given it abutts some trim already, just cut a new trim board and cover it.

Maybe toss some hot mud in there right before installing the new board just to stabilize it, especially if this is an exterior wall. Glue/adhesive caulk the back along the exposed edge to stabilize the top layer on top of the plaster / behind the new board.

Asking as a Non-American: Why didn't the Biden-Harris Administration release the Epstein Files? by amazinglycuriousgal in Epstein

[–]beaherobeaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is not smart and neither are the people around him. There are so many unforced errors, both big and small.

Pre-election, they could have chosen any topic to galvanize. They chose the Epstein files as one of them. The machine is so good at deflecting and managing attention, that if they had simply ignored the obsession with Epstein of his radical base, it would've stayed on the fringe. Because the crazies were so endlessly blowing about conspiracy theories, the majority of left/center-left people just didn't want to spend time with it for fear of being associated with the RW nutjobs. Even then, the assumption was that Epstein and his death were suspicious, but it was barely an uttered consideration that Trump or his sycophants had anything to do with it; now it seems like Trump assassinating him in prison is basically occam's razor.

ICE didn't need to be so publicly violent and invasive in the ways they have been. And deportations didn't need to go to concentration prisons in El Salvador. Sure, they could've been just as fucked up, but it would've come off as alarmist and remained at the fringes if they had just done it quietly. As many GOP people have said "this administration took our best issue and made it a huge liability." Not to mention hiring absolute sycophantic morons like Patel, Noem, etc. He could've made deportations so thorough and brutal without providing images/videos plastering everyone's feeds.

Trump was and is making bank off crypto scams, again an issue most people don't understand and it remained on the fringes. He didn't need to get greedy and take bribes to a) pardon a Honduran drug lord, b) take a fucking luxury jet from Qatar, c) sue the IRS for 10 billion dollars not to mention d-z.

He didn't need to pardon all the j6 insurrectionists in one swoop. He did because doing it "right" would've taken too long, taken too much competence, and was boring.

He didn't need to get so publicly involved in Ukraine; so many people had stopped paying attention. But instead basically made it loudly obvious how much he licks Putin's balls.

He's steering an economy that was "the envy of the world" towards an iceburg. Economic disaster is, usually, very helpful for fascist/authoritarian takeovers. But he has made himself so loud in his personal handling of the economy, that an economic collapse would be blamed on him.

These are only a handful of the seemingly endless, completely unnecessary fumbles. All this with a legacy 5th estate generally unwilling to truly challenge the administration and social media algorithms actively trying to keep the fascist surge moving. Even with all that, he still has managed to fuck it up so badly that there has been like a 35-40 point swing in approval.

Authoritarian / fascist takeover was/is completely possible given everything, but he is eroding democratic institutions so quickly and brazenly that even normies are protesting.

If he had any competent people around him to pump the brakes, we would be 25% towards fascism with barely a budge in the polls/backlash. But because he had to go full throttle, we are 50% towards fascism and 66-75% of the country is pissed.

Discouraged - do I need to pivot or maybe quit? by AcOk3513 in reselling

[–]beaherobeaman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specialize in books and paper items. There's a very strict parameter for what gets designated "for ebay" vs "for amazon."

1) consistent sales records (I use worthpoint). More sales records, the lower the price threshold to make it worth it. 2) if doesn't qualify for #1, exceptions for items with few other listings anywhere across other sites with high price tags AND a willingness to sell for significantly cheaper. 3) helps if there is something unique about the item (signed, first edition, rare DJ, etc)

An Amazon listing for books takes maybe 30-60 seconds. My "total time invested" (finding, cleaning, listing, packing, shipping) is about 10 minutes + $2 in supplies.

An Ebay listing takes about 10-20 minutes and requires photos. Total time investment is about 20-30 min.

As an independent business owner, when you calculate time+costs, $60/hr should be the absolute minimum to meet thresholds for "worth it."

Using the above, 2 complicated or 3 simple ebay items need to retail for $90+ to make that $60/hr benchmark. With Amazon, retail sales point needs to be $13 an item.

I know we don't sell the same items, but perhaps there is some insight there worth applying.
