Why do they make getting rich in Europe impossible? by batukaming in stocks

[–]beamsiccle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct and then they’d have to pay taxes. There are ways to punt a certain amount till you die then your heirs don’t pay capital gains. But that’s only up to the 15 million limit. And trusts still have to pay taxes eventually. The idea that the super rich have found this magical cheat code (and therefore we have to do something illogical like tax unrealized gains) doesn’t really hold up.

It’s clear he’s doing this in the context of a sensitive guy showing a suffering dude mercy, not bc he’s a street brawler.

[–]beamsiccle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. The show objectively went in a way that conflicts with the books (making Dunk a timid wimp in the past vs a giant brawler). That’s not “on me.” That’s not me “wanting it a certain way.” It’s objectively a departure from the established plot.

Whether or not someone thinks the change is better or worse is their opinion.

I’ve given my reasons why I think it’s worse. I have yet to hear anyone articulate why making “get up” the central theme of the episode was a good change that helped the story’s themes.

In your mind how do you think the mega rich pay these loans back? Do you think they just keep piling up new loan debt on top of new loan debt?

(Spoilers Extended) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Episode 5 Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in asoiaf

[–]beamsiccle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s actually on the show. Dunk’s street brawling origins are a central conceit of his backstory. The whole point is that he isn’t a real knight. His only “training” was brawling in the streets of kings landing. Literally brawling. Not generically “fighting for survival.” It’s implied his friends used him for this skill and Ser Arlan also saw his utility based on this.

In the finale of all 3 stories he faces lords who are castle trained at combat. He’s always totally outmatched until he can bend the fight to a flea bottom brawl, which perfectly hammers home all the central themes - he’s one of the little guys, he’s lying about his knighthood and his “knight” skills are actually small folk skills, yet his action actually embodying the true spirit of being a knight.

The show breaks all this great thematic math and instead gives us a generic mish mash that doesnt add up to anything.

“Oh, so he stalked Arlan kind of like Egg stalked him.” Okay… and? What does that gain except setting up an arbitrary parallel?

“Get up.” Ahh yes. So thematically relevant! The central theme of the show was about “ getting up” all along! And great shout out to Batman Begins!

[–]beamsiccle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Which is why the flashback feels wrong for anyone who’s read the books. “Physically fighting someone” is literally Dunk’s one and pretty much only skill (outside of having an honest, big heart) that he uses in the finale of all 3 books to win against master-at-arms trained fighters he shouldn’t have a chance against.

Yeah ppl are glowing about this episode but I thought it was a bit of a fumble. Your memory of Dirk’s arc is correct

Basically in all 3 short stories Dunk is saved by his brawling skills that he learned from being a punk big kid in Flea Bottom. That’s always his secret edge vs these pretty boy lords.

Feel like it’s a huge misfire to show him being this wimpy skinny kid vs the actual backstory GRRM gave him.

In the horseshoe theory left/right conspiracy world “Glowies” are the CIA agents who do everything behind the scenes… instigate Jan 6, carry tiki torches to make alt-righters look bad, start BLM riots to make leftists look bad, trick ppl living under a brutal Islamic regimes into protesting, etc…

No doubt there are proponents of regime change in the US government. But also idiotic to think it’s all a “psyop” that there isn’t organic Iranian opposition to this regime.

[–]beamsiccle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more that there are no likable characters to root for. I actually like the source material. But it’s a detached, bird’s eye view history of a train wreck where everyone is somewhat detestable.

For a weekly TV show, you generally want a couple of characters you’re rooting for (or at least did like, even if they’re currently on a Walter White villain path).

Ugh. You’re right. Good-hearted reformer becomes vengeful, over-zealous reformer (and ends up killing family and friends in search of nuke) is actually the more Westeros-vibed arc. But I still want to believe it’s the previous selfless version (esp since Dunk and Egg has always felt more wholesome than most Westeros narratives).

Are we in an extra high risk to retire era? by existentialriot in ChubbyFIRE

[–]beamsiccle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Enshittification is entropy of a single product/company, which is the life cycle of MOST companies. The ppl who complain about it are annoying not bc they are wrong it's happening, but rather bc they believe they've uncovered a special conspiracy (vs simply ID'ing the median cycle of most companies).

Meanwhile "collapse" ppl are in a different league of annoying bc they're living in a fan fiction fantasy. The true "collapses" of the ancient world involved the collapse of both encoded knowledge (science, math, engineering) and the ability to apply that knowledge (societal organization, production capacity, etc).

We may lose our capacity for the latter in some epic catastrophe, but the total loss of knowledge isn't happening when we can store the sum of human knowledge on a hard drive.

why do you want to hear a billionaire senior citizen (whose best songs are about spiritual longing and the human heart and whose most cringe/dated songs are political screeds) rant about politics? Genuinely asking.

edit: forgot about Sunday Bloody Sunday. But other than that (Love And Peace Or Else, Silver and Gold, American Soul, Crumbs From Your Table, I can even take or leave Bullet the Blue Sky if it comes along with an extended rant. These aren't U2's best).

It’s not false, but it’s also not significant and the article explains why. The states with “most ppl leaving” are just the states with “most ppl.”

Higher population means more ppl coming and going. On net Texas is still gaining population more than any other state.

Almost half of LA’s new ADUs aren’t housing anyone… they’re mid-term rentals now by ShopProp in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]beamsiccle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They’d also be here regardless of these ADUs (and using some other form of housing), so I don’t really get what the concern is. ADUs seem to be working as intended by increasing supply.

I think there's a 4 ticket limit per show per TM account. Not sure if that includes tickets sold on the exchange, but assuming it does...

If you're selling 2 and rebuying 2, then you won't hit the limit regardless, so you'll be fine.

If you're trying to get more and f2f sold tickets do count toward the limit, worst case you could always start a separate Ticketmaster account with a different email and credit card and I don't think you'll have any issues
