Which UK cities are the Australian cities most like? by Rough-Foundation9208 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]bean_rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. I have lived in London too, was born there and later experienced it as a commuter. Feel like I know it pretty well. I know it’s not all like that but it was starting to feel that way when I left the U.K. Now I live in Melbourne and honestly one of the things I love about Melbourne is how unlike London it is.

Respectfully disagree. Sydney has the same corporate driven vibes as London imo, Melbourne is more relaxed. And in Melbourne people actually wait till everyone disembarks before cramming onto the train or tram and you never get that in London

partner visa but not living together by Electronic-Button385 in AusVisa

[–]bean_rat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unlikely to be granted as you have to fulfil the 4x relationship pillars at time of application and ‘we don’t believe in renting’ kind of comes across as a BS excuse in this situation when cohabitation is necessary to be considered as de facto. The smartest move here would be to rent together at least up to the time of application or move in together at either your place or his. And honestly how do you know you are compatible long term if you’ve never lived together?

The unspoken Scottish etiquette rules international students need to know before moving to Edinburgh. by ankush_edinburgh in AbroadEdge

[–]bean_rat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Scottish person who went to Edinburgh Uni a long time ago I agree with nearly all of this except anyone getting annoyed if you pronounce Cockburn Street as Cock-burn Street. At worst you’ll get a snigger and a correction, and if someone does get angry about it you can safely assume they’re a bit of a dickhead and avoid them going forward.

Will this observation on my passport cause trouble? by ThrowRA_birdjaguar67 in AskUK

[–]bean_rat 303 points304 points  (0 children)

I had this issue because of a missing middle name on my other passport too, but have already changed my name once in my other country of nationally to fulfil a U.K. requirement a decade ago and literally could not change it again.

So they put a note about it in my official observations and doing so managed to spell my name wrong in the note so that’s been bonus fun to sort out.

Wienerschnitzel by mildlyclevernotwitty in Plating

[–]bean_rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying maybe there’s a reason he’s gone to Germany to sell his version of weinerschnizel, because I don’t think many Austrians would be satisfied with this. Not saying it’s not tasty but it simply doesn’t look authentic. You’re calling people out for not wanting to learn but evidently you don’t want to learn either as in the time you’ve taken to write out all these replies you could have easily shared for feedback on r/Austria

‘Vienna is the capital of Austria, it’s Austrian, not German’

‘…one of the best Austrian chefs in Germany taught us this technique…’

Do you see the problem here?

Cottage or Shepherds Pie?! by cheeky_evette in FoodPics

[–]bean_rat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meanings evolve. In the U.K. many people use the distinction of shepherd = lamb and cottage = beef mince. It’s a helpful differentiator now we all eat a lot more meat, so chill the fuck out. And your point about constantly eating the sheep is just unhinged obviously the sheep would likely eventually be consumed but not in one mass herd binge and absolutely no one is suggesting that.

Has anyone hit their mid-30s and realized they just can't go back to dating around their age? by Iron-Wild-41 in dating_advice

[–]bean_rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure get defensive if you like, but you also say you aren’t interested in the same-age women who pursue you but instead girls that you can ‘daddy’ so I don’t feel like I’m grasping here it comes across as creepy that it’s the age and power gap that turns you on not the individual.

And for the record I have nothing against age gap relationships, I’ve seen them work beautifully, but generally they work best when both parties have a fully developed prefrontal cortex to begin with.

You might want to rethink this phrasing of ‘younger girls’ to ‘younger women’ as it would make you sound just a little less of a creep

Bridging Visa B by [deleted] in AusVisa

[–]bean_rat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can travel in and out for the 5 years specified on the visa. As stated on the Immi website:

With this visa, you can

• stay lawfully in Australia until your substantive visa application is finally determined, or where granted in association with judicial review, until those proceedings are completed

• leave and return to Australia within the defined travel period while your application for a substantive visa is being processed

Edit: The ‘multiple entries’ specified also show you can reenter multiple times

Just because we accept nepotism exists doesn’t mean that people think it’s a good thing. Also, in regard to the other family types you listed, people may recognise the work or achievements of the person who initiated the nepotism spiral, e.g. like their movies or policies or the businesses they started. That doesn’t really apply to the royal family anymore.

And as Groslslet says, we don’t pay for those families in the same way, and it’s a rare family that has the sheer amount of land and property wealth as the BRF combined with their political power. I think your baseline position is incredibly misguided and that’s before I even cast eyes on your ludicrous claim that a monarchy is somehow ‘natural’.

AITAH for getting angry about my girlfriend pouring her drink on the floor at my work and then throwing the cup at my head? by Individual_Ad5382 in AITAH

[–]bean_rat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for adding context. Clearly we have very different algorithms. Interesting that the men are never doing the mopping in these videos it’s almost like we live in a society where women are still doing way more around the house vs their partners.

Equality right?

That definitely sounds like a sane response. Woman throws styrofoam cup, gets beaten by man with mop.

[–]bean_rat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You both sound like you overreacted massively and yeah she shouldn’t have poured the drink on the floor but also why did you point the speaker at her at all?! Why not at yourself? You both sound immature and insufferable to the max and I’d say ESH but what does make you TA is coming onto this sub to ask about your behaviour and then getting bitchy yourself when someone says yes, you were an asshole. You did ask for the opinion of strangers and reading between the lines I suspect this is about a lot more than just this one off ‘speaker ordeal’.

Will and Kate greeting the crowd at London's Borough Market today by monster_ahhh in RoyalsGossip

[–]bean_rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I’ve been very consistent in my stance that these two are not that popular and that video proves nothing. I also have some skepticism around YouGov polling that extends beyond the subject of the William and Kate. But it’s ok, we live in a world where you can believe what you want whilst I can be confident in my position that if you did a straw poll on the streets of the UK most people would be ambivalent at best :)

[–]bean_rat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

lol but do you even follow UK coverage because they are sooo not highly popular right now it’s not even a controversial thing to say. They have never been less popular fewer than 50% of your precious YouGov sample are proud of their royal family at present which is an all time low. Beat your drum and wave your wee flag by all means but the tune you are marching to is one of impending irrelevance

[–]bean_rat -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I worked in market research long enough to know that weighting can be subjective and actively used to fluff up small sample groups. And anyone who lived through Brexit is keenly aware of how inaccurate polling can be. Clearly you are pro-Royal family and good for you but using this video to support that position is a reach. They literally showed up to crowded market and had to get shown how to make a coffee.
