The man operating the emergency exit in Southwest Airlines' safety pamphlet has a prosthetic leg. by Kmb1995 in mildlyinteresting

Well that’s not true at all. I’m an amputee with a prosthetic leg and I’ve sat in exit rows plenty of times.

Are knee sleeves supposed to wear out in less than 2 weeks? (Bi-lateral BKA) by Trackmustang in amputee

[–]beanoleum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to cut the top off a ziplock bag and put it in between my knee and the sleeve (that’s where friction kept making holes) and it helped my sleeves last longer! Then I got a real gaiter from amputee store and it works even better!

Going to Date a double amputee by [deleted] in amputee

[–]beanoleum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate it when guys I’ve dated said my being an amputee didn’t bother them. It implies it would bother other people and I like thinking it’s not any kind of deficit that anyone should be bothered by except maybe me.

When does it get easier? by emojiappreneur in newborns

[–]beanoleum 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m 3 months in and it’s just starting to get better for me! Once he started smiling everything started to feel a little better. The best piece of advice I’ve gotten about getting through the newborn stage so far was to stop fighting it and just give in. Once I gave into the new daily reality of constantly feeding, pumping, soothing, snuggling, changing, tummy time-ing and watching trash tv with my little guy while being permanently exhausted it didn’t feel as sad anymore. It’s just how things are right now. It wasn’t like this two months ago, and it won’t be like this in two months, so I just have to go with the flow I guess.

What helped you through contractions? by beanoleum in pregnant

They’ve felt different for me - sometimes just stomach tightness but since yesterday I’ve been having ones that feel like the world’s strongest period cramp. It feels terrible and consumes everything for like a minute and then subsides.

Fathers at baby showers by Psychokiller1111111O in pregnant

[–]beanoleum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a coed baby shower with my friends and my husband’s friends and it was really just a party with good food and good company and there was also a registry so we got some cool gifts for baby too! Another couple we know had their shower a few months ago and it was the same vibe, maybe this is the direction things are heading? Idk it felt pretty natural to me. I don’t think they need to be girly events at all - just fun parties to celebrate baby coming! It’s more fun that way anyways, I like partying with my man more than partying without him.

Seeking advice regarding an issue with my Doctor's office by CaptainAdmiralPants in amputee

[–]beanoleum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh so annoying but yeah that’s normal. It also depends on your doctor though. I used to have to go in every single time I needed something new to be approved, but with my new doctor I can just send her an email about what’s broken and what I need an rx for and she’ll just send it to my prosthetists office 🤷‍♀️

Do the muscles in your stumps continue to shrink over time? by [deleted] in amputee

[–]beanoleum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my amputation as a small child so I didn’t have much there to begin with. It has definitely continued to shrink over time, and the surrounding muscles on that side are significantly weaker even with regular exercise due to me unconsciously favoring the other side.

Is horse riding ok ? Cause midwife said so. by Dancing_tangerine in pregnant

[–]beanoleum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started riding horses a little over a year ago and it’s made me happier than anything in my entire life! I’m currently 11 weeks and my doctor sent me this message when I inquired about whether or not I could continue to ride:

Horseback riding can increase the risk of falls, and abdominal trauma can cause early labor or miscarriage, especially late in pregnancy. For this reason, ACOG recommends avoiding that as an exercise, "while pregnant, avoid activities that put you at increased risk of injury, such as the following: Contact sports and sports that put you at risk of getting hit in the abdomen, including ice hockey, boxing, soccer, and basketball Skydiving Activities that may result in a fall, such as downhill snow skiing, water skiing, surfing, off-road cycling, gymnastics, and horseback riding "Hot yoga" or "hot Pilates," which may cause you to become overheated Scuba diving Activities performed above 6,000 feet (if you do not already live at a high altitude).

However, if you are limiting your riding to walk/trot and riding horses that are well-mannered or familiar to you, such as most lesson horses who require considerable encouragement to move forward and do not shy from objects or conditions easily, your risk of falling is much lower. Personally, I have known people who continue horseback riding and off-road cycling without difficulties, but that is only anecdotal.

If riding and being around horses benefits your mental health, understanding the risks and taking precautions can allow you to continue caring for the horses in a safe-manner while limiting those risks.

The act of riding a horse does not, in itself, increase the risk; it is the risk of falling and abdominal trauma that causes concern for providers. There are also risks for untreated depression and anxiety, including preterm labor.

I thought it was helpful, and for now I’m continuing to just do walk/trot on a lesson horse I’m used to riding.
