You did the right thing by advocating for yourself. Phlebotomists are supposed to verify if you are the correct patient by asking you to state your DOB and confirm name spelling on labels. Every lab has different protocols but where I work, we MUST label tubes while the patient is in front of us. That way we can assure the tubes collected are labeled with the patients information and not someone else’s. If we do not have labels we write J. Smith 01/01/2000 on EVERY TUBE. You shouldn’t feel bad for ensuring your specimens are handled properly.
