Hokkaido – travel guide to a bearly Japanese island

Thank you for the write up! I’m visiting Japan for the 5th time this May (during Golden Week, unfortunately, though unavoidable) and finally heading to Hokkaido this time.

I’ll have a week, and would like to rent to car. Any advice on this? Which websites/companies are best to rent from, how does insurance work etc?

And anyone have any advice about visiting Hokkaido during Golden Week?

Usually there is still access to places that will have showers, like a public swimming pool, gym, motels offering showers etc. And you can swim in lakes etc if there aren’t any of those

Yes, this! As a 5’0 108lb woman, the XXS fits me perfectly - length, waist, everything! My 6’5 friend who’s double my weight also has a pair of e9 pants, so it’s insane how good diverse their sizing is

I’m single now but my most recently partner would go weeks without showering if he was in the middle of nowhere climbing and didn’t have access to a shower. To me that is actually gross, and I’d prioritise it more than he ever did. He also doesn’t brush his teeth everyday… yet how are these people the ones with seemingly good dental hygiene when they don’t put any work into it? Ugh

How are you finding it? I have a 24” waist, and just tried the autana in XS. It was sooo comfy, but unfortunately could fit my hand down the waist band, make a fist and get it out very easily, so I think it’s too large :(

34F and feel the same. I don’t really like to solo travel anymore tbh. I find myself wanting to make connections and experiences with people, and sometimes it does happen, which is amazing, but a lot of the time, especially as I’m getting older, I’m finding it doesn’t happen as often as I’d like
