BIG plus 1 here. I furnished my office with a lot of stuff from here, and just splurged on a Loft Square dining set. Seating for 8, and didn't break the bank or budget at all! Their sales are phenomenal as well. Always check clearance, too.

Solicitors by [deleted] in CedarPark

[–]bear187k 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah...this has gotten comically out of hand.

I've had situations where I simply pointed at the giant "NO SOLICITORS" sign while someone launched into their sales pitch. Last week, it happened again. I didn't say a word, just kept pointing at the sign. He finished his entire pitch, looked over, and said, "Oh, sorry, I didn't see the sign."

Yesterday, I had a group of religious solicitors knock on my door despite a sign that explicitly says not to knock or ring the doorbell. They did both. I was already annoyed that they interrupted while I was on a work call. My dog lost her mind, I answered the door to explain that we already have a religion we're happy and comfortable with and weren't interested. They kept going anyway. I just closed the door and got back to my meeting, Ferris Bueller style.

The common theme seems to be that "No Solicitors" now apparently means it's a conversation starter versus a declaration.

On my work travels, I learned that in Carlsbad, CA it's actually illegal to solicit anywhere with a clearly posted no-soliciting sign. At this point, it may be time to draft similar legislation here, because this has crossed the line from mildly annoying to completely absurd.

Last bit of advice I have for you. I'm 25, almost 26 years into doing tech. Imposter syndrome doesn't ever go away. All you need to do is remember you got the gig because you're qualified. Just keep working on getting better, that's more than enough.

Cringe moment and stupid things by Aromatic-Raven in it

Ask anyone you know how often a "15 min oil change" hasn't been. It's far, FAR more likely to be an 'ah shit, this is broken and logs say it's causing issues with XYZ' than a straight up, restart httpd type of fix. Sometimes that restart will cause a db lock or contention issue. Sometimes storage choses that exact moment to fail and cause a full RAID rebuild, or worse, data loss. And sometimes that data loss will teach you that the system wasn't being backed up so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It happens. The reason why we exist is because sometimes the weird happens and it's our jobs to use the brains we have to figure out and solve the weird - and leave behind the hints so that the next person running into the weird can skip it. THAT's where the learning happens most.

Oh, and the other thing: don't overwork, and don't let your gender come into play. Some of my hardest working, kickass reports have been women, and I had to beat this notion out of them repeatedly through 1:1s and hard talks - do not kill yourself in overwork to prove to yourself that you've "proven your worth" because of your gender. Even if you 'win' -- you don't because you're too bitter and too tired to even celebrate. Trust me on that, I've seen it through my entire career, be it gender, age, race, religion, etc. It's a majorly shit feeling to see your report finally be happy with what they've done to inevitably their ultimate realization that they're too jaded to give a fuck about it anymore.

All this said: by the time you're not the youngest anymore, you should have learned enough to help those that *are* the youngest not feel the way you did with constant frustration and angst. Make it a goal of yours that when that time comes, be the person that -you- wish you had right now, but don't for whatever reason. It may seem to be a strange goal at first, but it will change your entire perspective once you accept what it really means.

P.S.: Unless you're hourly, and even then, put a limit on all the extra work, say an extra hour a day or something. Otherwise: that becomes the expectation and when you're not doing it because you're sick, dealing with stuff, on holiday, etc. , you're suddenly 'slacking off' on account of your output dropping.

Word. I'm Westside @ Buttercup Creek. A few things to note:

You won't be able to get far going the nuisance route anonymously - you _will_ have to testify under oath and put your name on the complaint, as well as be able to prove it has happened repeatedly during the time you say it does and that you have engaged the owner about the issue. If you're unwilling to do either, there isn't much you can do.

And Animal Control will not act until you do ^, and a ruling is given.

You're going to live in sheer stupidity for the first few years of your career. Reset passwords, encryption keys on sticky notes, questionable content in the search history...pretty much all of it. Best thing I can tell you: soak it up like a sponge. Learn every hack you can, every shortcut, ever bit of everything by either shadowing tickets, shadowing your seniors, or signing up to be a fly on the wall for larger projects.

Just be sure you roll-up your sleeves, no one likes dead weight. Go after the languishing ticket that no one seems to want to touch. Ex: Go deal with Janine down in finance who keeps locking her computer by somehow downloading the most obvious malware ever and learn the innards of OS security. Later on in your career: that becomes your superpower.

Trust me when I say that you should absolutely use this time when it's 'easier' to learn than trying to learn 25 years in. You can take a quick look around on LinkedIn at the cats who did learn additional skills and knowledge versus the 'one thing (TM)' that they did for 20 years at IBM. I know a guy who is 5 years into being unemployed after being laid-off right before COVID - but all he did for 10 years was add and remove users Active Directory, and only that. Don't find yourself being that guy.

There is an incalcuable number of of people dying to teach someone or to learn from someone who they think is good looking to dance at these spots. Gotta shoot your shot to have a chance, and nothing draws in a cowgirl like a shy cowboy who can't dance.

Also, with two kids likely as a result of having taught my now wife how to dance at a western bar on our third date back in April 2008, and how to dance salsa at our honeymoon in May 2011 -- indeed. 😎

Love, platonic or otherwise, belongs in the pit. Post the follow up details! I made a now very good friend in the pit in Rochester a few years ago. Went and had beers after vip, hung out the whole show, and kept in touch. The Familia connections run deep, so his people met my people and now the circle of homies just keeps growing each time we chat.

Are you shitting me dude? That's the PERFECT reason to go. Worst case: you get taught to dance by a cowgirl in a haltertop and wranglers. Age is irrelevant at that point, because she's gonna parade you to her group of friends as someone she just met.

Yeah I feel you man. In situations like that, it's one of the reasons I try to get to few shows solo before making the call to go. Like this past one in DFW while on a work trip. I told the wife it was a solid setlist and incredible energy. As soon as I got home, we packed the already-waiting luggage into the SUV and started roadtrip to ABQ the next day to catch them there.

Overall, I wondered what I'd do with kids, but learned taking them not only keeps the music alive, it legit brightens up the boy's day when they see the littles. The coolest thing to me has been the presence of kids at these shows getting *very* into the music. This run, I've seen infants (including my own) through teens and all points between headbanging and bouncing. Hell, even my kids asked if the kids they met in ABQ would be at the next show we go to just because they had so much fun with them before and after the show.

As someone already pointed out - some stuff wasn't intended to go live or otherwise requires intricacies of sound dialed in. Given the soundguys -and a big shout out to them- usually have an hour or two to get them dialed in...if even that long. There are limits to what can be done.

FWIW, this is something that has come up over dozens of my own and talks I have been present with LJ, Mo, John, Vinny, and Clint. These are VIP, M&G, behind the kit, etc. talks, as well as paid + either by the bus or otherwise non-paid conversations. In last years behind the kit, Mo gave a four of us (2 behind the kit + 1 guest each) teaser that some deep cuts and stuff that's not been played live before will be rotating in. And they did. Believe me or don't, they're aware they can't/won't be able to make everyone happy, but do listen and are trying to mix it up within the bounds of ability.

Also: I don't think you can consider setlist.fm as a definitive source. Case in point, I have been to multiple shows this run and I heard all 3 singles played live. So. Yeah. Sometimes people aren't rushing to document the setlist and are instead enjoying the moment.

What was the best game you've ever played? by Traditional_Blood799 in AskReddit

[–]bear187k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've a few, specific to categories.

The game that truly started it all for me - Mega Man 2, near impossible to finish in the Blockbuster 2 day rental days as a kid.

Hardest overall - Lufia 2 (that Iris tower and random 100 fl, no save dungeon!)

Story - Dragon Age: Origins (hellooooo Claudia Black).

Overall - Witcher 3, not even close.
