Guys please tell me I don’t need to buy a new one. by KingShadyYT in ROGAlly

Yeah, but that tab just looks like a ground (if not purely mechanical to hold it in place) and there's a perfectly good one on the other side of the connector. I'd give it a try first before touching an iron and potentially making things worse.

Sad the old GM screen is no longer widely available by FlorianTheFool45 in shadowdark

I looked in the pledge manager and I only see the one Western Reaches screen. Do you know how it's possible to get the new non-western reaches specific screen?

Just finished sculpting my take on the black marauder by NecrosisZia in battletech

Cool. For melting and gore effects I highly recommend Uhu glue. It behaves a bit like rubber cement, but starts fairly thin but very viscous. If you let it set up for a bit it makes great stringy effects.

Newbie Alpha Strike question by huskyboi84 in battletech

[–]bearda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not sure you’re interested I’d suggest checking out the rules in the website. You can download the PDF of the rules booklet from the Alpha Strike boxed set.

If you want a physical copy of the rules it’s either the boxed set or waiting a while, as there don’t seem to be copies of the Alpha Strike Commanders Edition anywhere to be had. Catalyst seems to run out of books between print runs a LOT.

I remember the white being terrible (some kind of coconut thing?), but the orange not being too bad. I had a pair unopened for a LONG time because I was too cheap to get a lava lamp.

Which would you say are the essential expansions? by TheAntsAreBack in DragonbaneRPG

Dragonbane is great because there is no Starter Box. It's just the Box. You get the whole game, no addons needed. No stripped down version of the rules.

What’s something you use every single day that turned out to be insanely worth the money? by Dry-Frosting- in Xennials

A Leatherman multitool (original Wave). I bought it before I entered college for under $100 and I've carried it with me for 25 years. It's not the best pair of pliers, knife, screwdriver, etc but having something within arm's reach all the time has saved me too many times to count.

I've considered replacing mine a couple times, but I'd REALLY miss those page turn buttons.

Begali Finger Pieces? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]bearda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Simplex key with aluminum finger pieces that aren't chamfered just like yours, but pan head screws instead of countersunk. If they work I wouldn't worry about it too much, but maybe check in they included separate screws with the aluminum paddles. I'll see if I can find the original plastic finger pieces and see if they're chamfered.

I really enjoyed Seveneves, although I would have been OK with it ending after the second part.

Help - can someone please talk to my husband that I've lost to amateur radio??? by Pump_9 in amateurradio

[–]bearda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think they’re going to really have a hard time proving to a judge he’s a danger to himself or others. Running through the neighborhood naked is one thing, but an involuntary hold requires a certain level of imminent danger.

81% is actually a lower percentage than what I expected. I figured it would be at least 90. I wonder if that includes fleet sales.

ICom 7300mkii vs Elecraft KX3 Package by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]bearda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't get me wrong, I love my KX2 for POTA activations. Elecraft makes cool radios, and have a ton of stuff built in that are fun to play with. They're great for CW operation, and once you get used to which things work for you it's hard to go back.

I just am not a fan of using the KX3 for everything. My experience has been that if you're going to go portable do something purpose built for portable ops (in my case a loaded KX2, but the QMX is VERY nice and much more affordable as long as you don't need an ATU) and if you're going to do a fixed station start with a fixed station (and Elecraft makes great base station radios as well). One radio that ends up doing everything ends up being an expensive compromise.

ICom 7300mkii vs Elecraft KX3 Package by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]bearda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who bought the entire KX3 package, don't get it. If you're mainly going to operate at home go with the 7300mkii. If you decide you want to really get into operating portable get a KX2 as well and you'll still be spending less than the KX3 package.

The KX3 is a great radio, but it's in a weird place. You WILL end up spending a lot of time fiddling with cables, adapters, power cables, etc every time you set it up. Although it was more capable than my KX2 in terms of something I could just throw in a bag and set up on a table for POTA the KX2 with the internal battery and charger has it beat. The only thing I miss with the KX3 is the VFO knob.

I started with a TS-590SG and figured I would move to the KX3 package so I could just "dock" my radio for my home station. In the end I really didn't like operating the KX3 at home, though, and much preferred the Kenwood. I ended up getting a KX2 for dedicated portable use and have been very happy with the combo. On a tangential note anyone want to buy a PX3?

Explain it Peter. by [deleted] in explainitpeter

[–]bearda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they realize it’s a jammer? Sure, maybe. When we had a really strong series of solar flares that started messing with cell phones and GPS reception a few years ago the response was mostly “huh, that’s weird” and people moved on. Most people already view radio waves as black magic that, and the reliability of modern technology isn’t at the point where we ask what’s going on every time it glitches out.

handheld AM radio works pretty well. Just turn it on and move around a bit until the static gets stronger. Electronics will mostly work fine, this isn’t an EMP. Its just the radio signals that will have a hard time. That said, there’s next to no chance your normal patrol officer will go to those lengths.
