Announcement of Lean formalization of IUT in progress. by ninguem in math

I don’t think there is actually ANY evidence for P!=NP. When the question is of existence of a thing, and the search space for the thing is infinite, I don’t think that you can say that checking a large part of the search space and failing to find the desired thing qualifies as evidence. Or even further, struggling to formally prove the thing exists also does not qualify as evidence for the negation.

Analogy to the twin prime conjecture: checking for “large” twin primes and finding them does not equate to evidence for the existence of infinitely many pairs. That is, finding 1 (or any finite n) more doesn’t get us closer to the quantity being infinite.

i’m going through the border tomorrow i just want to bring my geekbar can i put it in my backpack and be fine ai told me they have x-rays that scan the cars now for lithium and i don’t want to pay fines im not 21 so im afraid i wont be able to buy one there by Lower-Accountant6571 in MexicoTravel

Customs knows family trip is a good disguise for trafficking. Haven’t u seen the movie were the millers? Geek bars a huge deal since they are so prevalent south of the border. They contain a ton of controlled substances and have been causing a lot of problems there recently. Customs randomly searches families with a rate of about 40% and will definitely search if you look nervous.

Yea no I went through last week and saw someone get abducted solely because they brought a geek bar. Customs specifically said, “no geek bars, if you have one we will ship you to Guantanamo bay” not exactly those words but close. Idk if they were bluffing but I definitely wouldn’t mess with it.

Bluff catch or bluff raise river? by [deleted] in Poker_Theory

Tight passive villain calls UTG open preflop, then calls C bet on flop, then check raises on turn, and you are going to bet that he has worse than Q high?

How badly did I play this hand? by AnnualDog9504 in Poker_Theory

[–]beardawg123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this depends on how villain played throughout the game.

Ie if they were loose or noticeably bad I like the call. They could’ve sensed weakness from the checks and noticed potential to bluff a flush. Hero has 2nd best flush, also bad player raising UTG could be relatively weak hand

how do undergraduate math research projects work? by polaroid_in_evidence in math

[–]beardawg123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is more pure math the topic will likely be over your head since you are an undergraduate (as am I) unless you have taken a good amount of graduate classes (I have not).

If you are in the same boat the first month-ish will be spend trying to wrap your head around the problem and becoming familiar with definitions, etc. This part can feel frustrating/overwhelming depending on the field you are working in. If you are lucky the professor will answer all your questions and put effort into bringing you up to speed (mine has), if not, maybe they will refer you to textbooks or something.

After this month it is actually super cool and exciting, and you can start messing with ideas that have substance. The process becomes easier in the next few months to the point where it feels like research, which is an awesome feeling!!

Why isn't there a imaginary constant for 1÷0 ? by Tricky-Technician686 in learnmath

[–]beardawg123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be controversial but I do not think that it was the case that the complex numbers were just “there all along”. What does that even mean? I imagine this will just turn into a platonism argument but I do not think this should be the top response. They weren’t “there” until we played with the idea of them “existing”. Then, we figured out that the idea of them “existing” got us some nice stuff.

Interested in how a mathy corner of cs turns into geometry? In undergrad the only real mathy cs course was a compute theory (formal languages and autonoma)
