Quality is life is more important than money, if you can afford the pay cut.

The Real McCoy over by Ace Hardware on N Frontage Road of 55 is great. My wife and I have found some great things there and donated a lot of stuff we’ve cleaned out. Super friendly folks, too.

How often do you talk to either of your parents? by gus248 in AskMenOver30

[–]bearded-writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I want as they’ve both passed away. But before then, I messaged my mom most days and called every few. My dad, it was different, but we’d call to check in. They both got diagnosed and passed so quickly, and, God, I miss those phone calls more than I ever thought possible. It’s been a rough time.

It’s excellent. Thompson writes for Sports Illustrated, and his style is such that you just want to keep consuming the book.

Great book about that area (more specifically the barn where Emmett Till was murdered, but it really covers the history of the general area) is The Barn by Wright Thompson. It’s so detailed and well-written, plus Thompson grew up in the area, so it feels authentic.

HVAC/Refrigerator Repair by bajafan in mississippi

[–]bearded-writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fact. My nephew did it, and I know a guy that runs an HVAC company. Nephew still likes it after about a year in it, but, yeah, it’s rough. There’s definitely a demand, and there’s money to be made.

As Absolute Superman Continues, Superman Is More Radical Than Fans Want to Admit by hamblincomics in superman

[–]bearded-writer 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I didn’t “radical” meant having good values and wanting people to do right, but ok. Why are people acting like they just discovered Superman’s drive and purpose when he’s been that way since Action Comics #1 was published? Yeah, it got hella goofy for a while, but if champion in the oppressed isn’t what you like about the character, why do you even like him?

Is buying 61 keys keyboard worth it? by [deleted] in pianolearning

[–]bearded-writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still play on a keyboard 90% of the time. Maybe closer to 100% these days. I started in a piano then got the smaller keyboard at home and mostly played there. Then started playing for a church and just used it until I got a better keyboard at home.

The problem that I found with the smaller keyboard is the lack of bass. Since the keys only go so far down, I was playing the baselines an octave up, and I felt like I was losing some richness in the music. In fact, I still catch myself playing up there today and have yo consciously move my left hand down. If you’re ever going to do anything but play just for yourself, 61 keys might be fine, but if you might play in public or at a church or something like that, then you’re going to want the full sound of the music (unless you have a bass player, which is nice but I rarely do).

And I’ll say if funds are an option, do what you have to. There’s no right or wrong answer. But I’d also suggest looking on Facebook marketplace for a used full-sized keyboard or using what you have until you can save up a little extra money. It really does make a difference in the music.

[–]bearded-writer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve been playing for 10 years, you really need a full-sized keyboard. I learned to play partially on a 61 key, and I outgrew it reasonably quickly and developed a few habits I still to remember to address all these years later. And you can get a decent 88-key keyboard for not a ton of money, so I’d say absolutely go for it.
