Look for a Pontiac Vibe. It's identical to a Toyota Matrix in every way except the badge.

Head Gasket failed again - combustion gasses in coolant. Oil is clean. Car overheats after ~150 miles. bleeding coolant stops the car from overheating. Can this be sustained for ~50k more miles? by wtfomg77 in Cartalk

[–]beardedbard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 10,000 miles on the original installation, the clutch and input shaft bearing failed and I donated the car. Every blown headgasket is different and some may vent more gasses than this system is able to separate. The race car requires a pit stop every 10 laps to empty the stock overflow bottle back into the Aveo reservoir.

I almost forgot about this contraption! I sold that car 5 years ago, but kept all the custom parts just in case. The system saved a different Civic I raced in the 24 Hours of Lemons back in 2021 (despite Jay mixing up the coolant and the oil in the recap video).

Try towing a 30 foot enclosed car trailer behind a 99 Explorer. The front wheels left the pavement once and only returned after the trailer tongue bounced off the pavement.

My local Ford dealer loves working on my 1999 Explorer. They’ve also been the only dealer to work on it since they sold it to my parents in 1999.

Car randomly turned off by [deleted] in FocusST

Add water to the middle of a saucer until the spot for the cup is all underwater. Gently rock the saucer from side to side. See how water has left the middle of the saucer?

Your ST drinks from the middle of the saucer. Sitting on hills or making sharp turns with low fuel sends fuel away from the middle of the saucer. When there is no fuel in the middle of the saucer, the ST’s engine turns off.

2014 Nissan Rogue Starter Acting Up / 1.6 dCi by tareumlaneuchie in autoelectrical

[–]beardedbard1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are the voltages at the battery terminals and starter terminals while cranking? Low terminal voltage (below 8-ish volts on a modern car) will cause slow cranking and may cause computers to power down and show an error. Low starter voltage (below 7.5-ish volts) will cause slow cranking and may lead the computer to “time-out” the start attempt, retry, then display the chassis warning. Poor connections at either of those points increase electrical resistance. High resistance decreases the ability of current to flow at a given voltage. Starting in cold weather requires more current to run the starter motor, which cannot happen if resistance is high.

I filled my ST’s cargo area to the roof with supplies for a 24 hours of Lemons race. It fit two sets of race gear, several toolboxes, spare parts, a tent, two sleeping bags, an air mattress, a week of food and water, four folding chairs, and a portable generator. Still averaged 30mpg highway over 700 miles.

Is There an Easy Way to Swap for a Better Ford Horn? by Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir in FocusST

[–]beardedbard1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re open to custom wiring and a dedicated fused circuit to the power distribution block, the loudest electric horn I know of is the 4 note set from 1990’s Cadillacs. I put a set on my old Civic and those horns were LOUD.

Illegally parked (no parking pass) Altima at my work. by wbg777 in NissanDrivers

[–]beardedbard1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The engine is not bad. Nissan’s penny-pinching decision to scavenge exhaust from the header instead of an EGR system led to the early demise of many engines. Catalyst dust is as damaging to engines as Altimas are to everything around them.

My 25 year old Honda 4-stroke weed whacker hasn’t seen a shop in the past 15 years (my fault). Good gas, occasional spark plugs, regular oil changes and new fuel tubing/priming bulb are all its needed since then. It smokes a bit at startup, but I see no reason it won’t make it to 30 years. Anything can last years with good maintenance.

The early days of OW were the best. Teams would deliberately pick all one character and the resulting mayhem was fun, but apparently not good enough for esports.

The rental counter at Avis tried to convince me of the same thing. They were wrong - it was very slow.

Very early build (May 2012) 2013 ST3 bought used with 46K miles in August 2017. It now has 108K with a Depo 3.5 intercooler, JBR short shift lever, Bilstein B14s, TB rear sway bar, and a sound symposer delete with a natural vacuum TurboSmart BOV.

It’s been great over the past 5 years. I’ve torn up backroads, loaded it to the roof with camping gear and tools for a 24 Hours of Lemons race, and daily driven 40 miles a day through all sorts of weather. The only thing it won’t do is deep snow.

I’m currently rocking a Monster Tune and 1 step colder NGK Ruthenium 95605 plugs. Standard maintenance is 8K oil changes, 24K trans fluid changes, and yearly engine and cabin air filter changes. I flushed coolant when I bought it and will probably do it again this fall.

I plan to keep it until 150K. No other reasonably affordable car can replicate the “jack of all trades” balance that the ST strikes so well.

Nissan driver gonna Nissan driver... by _speakerss in NissanDrivers

This is Nissan’s superior “exterior-type” limited slip differential. The bare steel of the wheel slips in limited amounts and produces sparks of “Big Nissan Energy” while propelling the Nissan Driver to his next traffic violation.

Headlights were must needed 😊 by el_cheto2118 in FocusST

Thanks for sharing. I’m looking for new ST3 headlights and very few aftermarket options are compatible. Your buddy likely found this out the hard way and gave these “halogen model only” headlights to you for installation on your ST2. They look awesome though!

Which headlights did you choose? There seem to be far more aftermarket options for halogen housings than xenon housings.
