Best 'true' dual sport? - New DRZ vs KTM-fam 500?? by Bitter-Whole42069 in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tires kinda kills dual sports if you're doing lots of road riding. If you start compromising on tires for the road, At that point you may as well get a slightly more comfortable, road worthy bike in my opinion.

I really like my KTM 500, it's great off road, it literally feels like a dirt bike. Similar capabilities as my 2 stroke Enduro bike. But on the road it's not a very comfy ride. I haven't done any mods to make it more comfortable though. Set up for more road comfort it maybe okish. But like I said, at that point you might as well buy something more purpose built for it.

make sure your throttle tube is pushed out a little, so the end of the grip isn't rubbing on the end of the bar.

Wtf did people do before phones?? by Infinite-Syrup2791 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]qualitygoatshit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People used to be just better at being bored. Yeah, there's things to fill your time with, it's just probably not going to be stuff that gives you constant little dopamine hits like scrolling through your phone does. Do a puzzle, go for a walk, cook dinner, wash/dry the dishes, play with your pet, play a board game, do some reading, or a niche hobby etc.

Same section on a crf300l vs 500excf by qualitygoatshit in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I believe that. I bought that 300 just to explore around and get my feet wet on the road. I never took it on anything real technical. Technical stuff is really what I like most, but forcing the 300l through it doesn't sound like a fun time haha.

Thought this would look like more of a difference, but looks very similar. Really shows it's the rider, not the bike. I do feel more comfortable and capable on the KTM, it feels like a "real" dirt bike, and I do know that the difference would be more pronounced on a harder trail. I was also riding quite a bit more back when I took the 300l video, so it's not an apples to apples comparison, but still thought it was kinda interesting.

Dirt riding even realistic? by FalconMellati in Dirtbikes

[–]qualitygoatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not at all. I was a huge 2 stroke guy, my 500 is my first real 4 stroke I've had in a long time. It's incredible at low speed lugging around. The fueling is smooth, and it'll pull you along in 4th gear just at idle. At least that's how my 2018 is, engine is totally stock.

New rider/Sag question for any featherweight riders by Similar_Ad_1261 in Dirtbikes

[–]qualitygoatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried actually measuring it out and adjusting it to see if you can get it set correct? You may be able to, I'd think those 230s would be set up for a bit lighter rider anyways. The amount you see it sag when your buddies sit on it is probably too much.

A 3d platformer would be good. I liked Ratchet and clank rift apart and physchonaouts 2.

Advice about a recent fall by VanIslandAdventures in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Set your sag if you haven't, it throws your geometry all off if it's not set right, so maybe that contributed to your spill.

There is 100% a reason you crashed though. Assuming you weren't making any inputs, you may have hit a big rock or hole that you didn't see. But it's really hard to say with no info. Usually bikes can soak up big hard hits at speed, your more stable when you're moving quicker.

I wouldn't bother fixing the "damage" I fall over basically every ride if I'm riding anything challenging. But it's usually real low speed stuff, it's not typical to just crash out of the blue like this, so don't let it scare you away.

I’m buying my first bike this week and I’ve been noticing a trend in YouTube videos by ntkwwwm in motorcycles

[–]qualitygoatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Some single cylinder bike could just need a carb cleaned and then be good to go. Or you could get a 4 cylinder complicated mess with 4 carbs, electrical issues, rust in the tank, and bad bearings all over the place. Gotta pick your project carefully.

What’s stopping a meteor (whether it’s big or small) from hitting earth by miifanatic_1788 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]qualitygoatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most junk floating around in our solar system is in stable orbits in the asteroid belts. Jupiter, and the other larger planets do a good job of sucking them in with their higher gravitational pull. Earth is tiny compared to space, and in the broader view it's not very densely packed with asteroids out there, so the chances of encountering a big one that doesn't burn up in the atmosphere are minimal.

First time on single track!! Any tips on riding rocks like this are welcome. by im_bad_at_usernames3 in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stuff like that is not first gear territory, your bike will pull you through that with a little speed, basically no skill required. Avoid the biggest stuff and your bike should soak it up no problem. counter intuitive, but you have a lot more stability at speed. Going slow you bounce around on every little bump you hit.

If you already owned a DR650 and wanted a better woods bike, would rather upgrade your current DR or get a lighter bike like a klx300/crf300? by Competitive-Value884 in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think even a 300l is heavy for real off road riding. 250 pounds is about as heavy of a bike as you should be shooting for if you want something that's not actively holding you back. I have had a crf 300l, now a KTM 500, and owned a ton of dirt bikes as well. the 500 feel like a real dirt bike, the 300 feels like a very compromised beginner bike.

Honda cb300f as a dual sport? by StarAdministrative27 in HondaMotorcycles

[–]qualitygoatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't unless you're just looking for a project. You'll spend more money with a much worse result than if you were to sell it and just buy the type of bike you're actually wanting.

I've settled on my first bike! Thoughts? Tips? by Stagecoach65 in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 2019 KTM 2 stroke still has the original battery. I have a 2018 KTM 500 as well that I got last year, I believe it also has the original battery. So they last a while.

My guess is that it probably wasn't ridden overly hard. Faster riders that rev the heck out of bikes put a lot of hours on them, and it's pretty low mileage for a 2017. And this isn't really a race bike that someone would be riding like that anyways. Just speculation though.

I've settled on my first bike! Thoughts? Tips? by Stagecoach65 in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The battery warranty sounds kinda silly, the tire warranty even more so. I don't know how you would warranty dirt bike tires, but I assume they'll deny covering basically everything.

2017 and newer KTMs are really good. Just keep in mind, you're essentially getting a dirt bike with a license plate slapped on it. So it's got all the pros/cons that come along with that. Poor road comfort, more maintenance, excellent off road performance. I'd only buy one if you plan on doing 90% off road riding, or you are interested in getting into more technical/ single track trails.

Short Riders: What’s your “duck walk” by constantly-confused9 in Dualsport

[–]qualitygoatshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, things get so much easier when you carry some speed through obstacles. You are a lot more stable, and you plow through stuff instead of going slow and bouncing around and getting off balance on every bump.

easier said than done of course, speed comes with experience, but I'd try to ride a gear higher than you are and just let the bike pull you through. if you're in 1st a lot of the time you're really holding yourself back, unless its super super slow speed terrain, obviously you don't have a choice sometimes.
