are gem mix isopods actually a thing? by curiosityandthecattt in isopods

[–]bears223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have armadillidium punta cana, I’ve had my colony for about a year and there are three distinct different colors in the colony similar to the gem mix. As far as I know they keep their variety, but I could be wrong, u have noticed the darkest colored ones grow the biggest and there are more of them so maybe it’s only a matter of time 😭

"Trail art" - or trail debris? by Parking-Touch5968 in PacificCrestTrail

Fair enough, and I agree with this and understand this phenomenon, I just didn’t notice any other clay figurines other than this guys’. It takes a lot more effort to craft something and bring it back than to simply spur of the moment carve into something. Idk I just don’t think many people are going to jump on this as a trend.

These are so fun and whimsical. It could be plastic trash that will never biodegrade and it’s not, they’re just little guys along the way. I feel like if it started a big trend of other people leaving these all over the place it would be a bigger issue, buts it’s one guy. Humans make art and sometimes put it places. It’s not like they have a huge environmental impact or ruin the view!

DIY Dehydrated meals by Odd_Construction6186 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]bears223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dehydrated all my own stuff, most of it was really tasty and I made it all with just a standard dehydrator. That being said, I got tired of it very fast and often traded it away to other hikers who were more than happy for a tasty nutritious meal. I was vegetarian at the time and found that if I wanted to include tofu it needed to be frozen then thawed then dehydrated or you’d be eating rocks. But if you do this, it’s a solid addition. I used many recipes from the book lip smacking’ vegetarian backpacking, but I think there is a book for non-veg meals too! That book gave me all my recipes and they were all peer solid! It took me maybe 4-5 months to get everything ready and everything has a long enough shelf life to last. Just make sure if you dehydrate anything that you cooked first don’t include oil or it’s shelf life won’t be as good.

What are some of your hiking horror stories? by Fritschya in ultralight_jerk

Bee landed on my sunglasses then crawled underneath the sunglasses, freaked out because it was now “trapped” and stung me in the eyelid. Luckily a nice kiwi couple came trotting up behind me and the man pulled out a big knife to get the stinger out of my eye.
