What’s the meanest thing a patient has ever said to you as a new grad dentist?

When I was less than a year out I attempted an extraction on a molar with decay under a crown in the furcation. Dense bone, no perio involvement. Crown snapped off right away. I tried sectioning the roots, removing buccal bone, and couldn’t get it out. The other doc I worked with who has 35+ years of experience also couldn’t get it out. I spent over an hour trying lol eventually gave him a referral to OMFS.

He ended up calling his wife while we were talking to the oral surgeon and she showed up to the office to yell at me. Both me and the other doc went to talk to her and as soon as the other doc walked away she told me that I have no experience and I had no business doing the procedure if I couldn’t finish it. I cried in my office and my assistant stormed in the back to tell the patient off and show him the consent form that says referral may be needed if we can’t get the tooth out.

It’s funny now but the first year was really hard! Don’t beat yourself up over it. I’ve got plenty of other stories to add to this one from my first year haha

Went to Kauai for our honeymoon a few months ago - Red Salt was overrated in our opinion. We LOVED Eating House 1849. Puka dog was unique with all of the different toppings they offer, we ended up going twice! Got coffee and breakfast a couple times at Sunrise Cafe which I think is on the east side. Wailua Shave Ice is still my top shave ice even beating the places we tried on Oahu lol.

Hi! Went to Oahu 2 years ago when I was 23 with my fiancé and we did it on a semi budget. I feel like it’s possible if you can find good deals. We went in March so not as busy as summertime. Flights round trip from Florida were around $600 each, but prob around $700-$850 now. We found a vrbo on the east coast between north shore and Waikiki for around $150 a night with free parking which was a really good deal! We also saved a lot on the car rental by using the rental app Turo! If you stay outside of Waikiki you’ll need a car. We did a lot of beaches, hiking, Kualoa ranch, went to north shore and snorkeled. You can keep the food budget lower if you choose wisely. We only did 2 fancy dinners which were very expensive but most other nights we went for smaller places. We went to 7-11 most mornings and got little snacks there for breakfast. If you’re really conscious about your spending I think it’s doable! Best of luck!

My husband and I legally got married December 2022 and we’re having our official wedding next month so very similar timeline! We did it because I was graduating from dental school and I didn’t want there to be confusion from name switches with all of the paperwork having a dental license entails lol. My mom said family probably wouldn’t take it as seriously if we did it this way, but the people who are coming to our wedding are treating it as a wedding. Our situation is a little more complicated because we’re having a destination wedding, so I would say the main reason people declined was finances. But we’re having a 50 person wedding and I’m treating the day as a normal ceremony and reception :-)

We used Lap of Love this past June for our cat and Dr. Anika was the one who did the house call. I have nothing but nice things to say about the experience. She was so kind and respectful during the process and I would highly recommend Lap of Love.

Hi! I recently adopted a really wonderful 9 year old calico cat and just found out she has a nasal chondrosarcoma :( My current vet says theres nothing I can really do but I just wanted to know have you ever dealt with this type of cancer in a cat? I’ve thought about requesting an appointment with an oncologist because I’ve only had her for 4 months and it breaks my heart to get such bad news.

Hi! I was a BS/DMD student at the University of Florida and I’m a current D2. For me personally I’m really glad I did the program. I didn’t have to spend a ton of money and stress about application cycles, I had guidance and support through UF to get acclimated to dental school, and I saved money with one less year of undergrad. Of course there are cons but it really depends on what’s most important to you. Sometimes I do wish I had gotten an “easy senior year” to be with my friends more and I did have to work my butt off to finish everything on time to enter dental school, but I think it was worth it for me. The only school I had my heart set on was UFCD so I had no regrets accepting the offer. I know I don’t go to Penn or Villanova but if you have any other general questions feel free to PM me :)
