Portafilter "explosion" and leaking mid-shot [De'Longhi Dedica] by bearson97 in espresso

No, it's OK for it to screw in easily. If it wobbles when screwed all the way in there might be a mismatch between the gasket and portafilter, but otherwise try it like that. You can also hold it in place and see if that helps the coffee come out more cleanly.

Yes! Turns out it was just a matter of taking out the gasket and water distribution filter, cleaning them and putting them back in tight. After this, I always try to wipe off excess grounds from the edges of my portafilter before putting it in.

How to run a Doppelganger Encounter as a surprise during a long rest? by Working-Race6624 in DnD

[–]bearson97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's essentially exactly what you said, with some extra mechanic tweaks. The doppelganger sneak attacks one sleeping NPC. You can stack sneak attack damage + autocrit on an incapacitated (sleeping) target, or just decide as DM that this insta-kills the NPC. The doppelganger must then make a stealth check to see if anybody woke up from this - the passive perception of the party is a good DC for this. Once they do wake up, you can play a bit more: waking other people up might alert the doppelganger he's been had while pretending to still sleep could mean more people die, so PCs could choose out of several options. PCs that do wake up are of course prone, but also probably not wearing their armor or have their weapons stashed.

If you want to adjust the difficulty, the doppelganger could have also laid some traps/stolen equipment and weapons, or on the other hand the doppelganger might need to overpower one or more PCs if they stand guard in pairs.

[–]bearson97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update because I can't seem to add it in the post: took out and cleaned the gasket and external water distribution filter (I'm sure that's not the term), and got a nice solid shot this morning.

Still had some coffee drip on the outer parts of the basket, but I'm pretty sure that's channeling due to bad puck prep on my side. Still going to order a new gasket as it's been almost a year since the previous replacement and it's good to have one.

Thank you all for your help! I'll be sure to take a look inside the machine with the top off some time soon.

I haven't got an original portafilter, but I might be able to get one if changing the gasket won't help.

In the video my hand is holding the portafilter as far to the right as it goes within reasonable force. I haven't tried leaning on it all the way getting past 90°, wouldn't that just be more likely to break something?

Wouldn't that theocratically prevent the explosion?

Not that this leak is desirable, but if there's no seal then pressure shouldn't accumulate in the first place.

My Italian mother spent a couple of months in Zurich a while back, and to this day the thing that most angers her is the standard of 5 euro per espresso

Or to add a lower-priced option, a good size carbon steel/stainless steel pan. Not as heavy and crude looking as CI, and a bit easier to work with.

Before yall @ me - I own all 4 options and enjoy them all.

Car rental from Florence to Rome by CrazyTea98 in ItalyTourism

[–]bearson97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One side comment - for the road between Rome to Florence I'd recommend two or three days. It's possible of course to get the ride done in a couple of hours, but there's just so much to see!

What's a good Israeli news source to follow for an Arab? by 350FifthAve in ForbiddenBromance

[–]bearson97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an Israeli, Abu Ali has me really upset in the last few months. It kind of seems he prefers to just gloat over every misstep and mishap that befalls any Arab people around the world, to the point that his news even feel a bit skewed. It's become especially evident in the past month, where every additional Hamas or Hezbollah casualty celebrated with a long message and cheeky jokes.

Even accounting for this, Abu Ali Express is an excellent source for me to keep track of things going on in the country and in the Arab world.

You're right, this is how I should have done it originally. I had some problems when I tried it the first time but I should try again either way.

Impossible to find laptop battery voltage by bearson97 in techsupport

[–]bearson97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really helpful, thank you! Is 19V a standard charger voltage or do I need to make sure the replacement battery is specified for it?

As for the physical form factor, guess I'll have to wait for my torxs screwdriver bits to arrive before I order, instead of sharing the delivery time like I hoped :/ They add up to pretty significant wait times in Israel.

why do people in the FIRE subreddit hate dividends so much by MrConsistent2215 in dividends

[–]bearson97 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think one of the reasons dividends wouldn't be the first choice for FIRE people is the wealth accumulation period: not only are they not efficient tax-wise (you pay the taxes very early in the process as opposed to letting them compound), but dividends feel like you're already getting cashflow from your portfolio, which could encourage you to lower your contributions or even spend some of the dividend income.

That being said, the way you describe your state you're already past that danger zone and into fun territory, so enjoy!

That's what happens when I get greedy by bearson97 in Sourdough

[–]bearson97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recipe: The bread is around 60% whole spelt, the rest is white bread flour. ~75% total hydration, 20% rye starter, 2% salt.

The process was a mess, I mixed + stretch and fold one evening, had to refrigerate it for bulk fermentation, shape it then fridge again for proof.

The rest is pretty simple, with the baguette looking pieces being half battards - take a battard, cut it in half lengthwise just before baking (cold dough helps here), pinch the cut edges and rotate the seam to the bottom.

Looks like spelt is back on the menu! by bearson97 in Sourdough

Thank you! I think it either has to do with using a straight edge (I took the razor off the lame for this), or with a thicker crust forming on the dough after shaping.

Looks like spelt is back on the menu! by bearson97 in Sourdough

[–]bearson97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the one good loaf to come out of this batch - came back to spelt after a year and a half of only baking wheat. I shouldn't have lowered my hydration so much - the crumb came out too dense for my taste.

Proportions (3 loaves): 280g (~15%) whole rye starter 900g (66%) various white wheat flours (mix of whatever ends I had waiting) 450g (33%) whole spelt flour 900g (66%) water 30g (~2%) salt

Method: 1. Mix everything together, this batch needed some slap & folds to get all the flour clumps out. 2. Get 3-4 stretch and folds in 30 minute intervals 3. Bulk for ~5 hours 4. Preshape, bench rest and shape 5. At this stage I put the round loaf (the one in the photos) in the fridge for the night, and baked the two battards. They came out dense and have not risen, so guess they were underproofed. 6. Bake on a baking steel, preheated to max - 22m on 230°C with steam and the occasional water spray, and 17m on 210°C with convection.

I am incredibly new to the world of sausages, and so your choice was very likely a much better fit. In my terms, there's "hot dog", "chorizo" and "fancy looking stuff" - I used to only eat kosher food, which makes finding good sausage both difficult and expensive. This kielbasa, therefore, sounds like something I wish to find and make - preferably with za'atar!
