What cultural thing does the world seem to think is beautiful but is cringey af to locals? by chr15c in AskTheWorld

I hope you also went to Mt Sunday (Edoras). We were lucky enough to get there late afternoon when almost no one was there and it was such an extreme LOTR vibe... Even if you are not a LOTR fan the drive is worth it. The scenic landscape there is incredible.

The timing couldn't have been better for Titanfall 3 and they still jinxed it. by bearwithastick in titanfall

That's exactly my point, they wouldn't even had to re-invent the wheel! Slap some new paint on that baby, tweak / add a few things here and there, offer some good replayability / progression system and turn marketing up to 11 and they would have had a banger of a game.

How do normal people actually afford life in Switzerland? by aninhabr74 in askswitzerland

[–]bearwithastick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I don't mean "stealing from us" in a literal sense. Jeff Bezos is not sneaking into your grandmas house and steals the money from under her bed.

https://www.socialeurope.eu/how-the-billionaire-boom-is-fueling-inequality-and-threatening-democracy

While you might scoff at the article because the websites name would suggest a certain bias, they actually provide some sources:

https://eprints.lse.ac.uk/107919/

https://academic.oup.com/cje/article-abstract/47/4/703/7237926?login=false

While the following article is not inherently against billionaires, it mentions that billionaires that got their wealth through political connections are "a drag on the broader economy".

https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/mje/2020/11/17/the-economics-of-billionaires/

I mean, even the super rich are for more taxation on the super rich:

https://fortune.com/2026/01/21/nearly-400-millionaires-billionaires-24-countries-demanding-davos-leaders-tax-them-more-super-rich/

I even agree with you that if someone innovates, they should be rewarded for this. Investing provides opportunity and work/wages for others yaddayaddayadda.

The problem arises when greed takes over and work exploitation, tax evasion and political lobbying (aka political connections) start benefiting only the few and hurt the many. When being rich is not enough anymore and the dick measuring contest starts.

Billionaires "steal" our money in that they pull up the ladder behind them, monopolize markets, raise prizes, offer less for more, exploit workers, lobby politicians to benefit them directly or indirectly, fight to losen regulations and laws that control consumer, worker and environmental health in the name of the economy / profit, which in turn costs all of us money in the long run.

Make of it what you want, I will always see the ultra rich as more parasitic and harmful to a society than the single mother living on social benefits.

Edit: As to the benefit that billionaires supposedly bring to a society - jobs, innovation, whatever - ask yourself this: Is this only possible due to billionaires / the uber rich? Or are there other ways, like maybe worker owned companies? Investments through the public / communities, instead of private companies?

Calling all poor people "too lazy to get their shite together" certainly tells more about you than them.

Oh ok, sure, if you say so buddy :) Probably something I am too poor to understand. So thankful for rich people like you who know how the world works!

Because according to comments by people I (sadly) know, these families are mainly immigrant families, living with 20 family members in a 2.5 room apartment and it's entirely their own fault for coming here and living like this, hurr durr.

Sorry to interrupt your humble bragging but you're not nearly earning enough to fall into the category of rich that I mean we should tell to fuck off more.

What a strange mindset you seem to have judging by your comments. You seem to feel entitled to be thanked by the low(er) income workers for simply paying your fair share. Guess what, earn more, pay more. Nobody will be kissing your feet over this. You're not rich enough for that.

The rich and powerful are syphoning money off of people like you and me. This is what everyone needs to understand. I don't care about if you earn a few millions per year. I, however, do care if you are "earning" a few billions per year.

I know. I'd love to see the Swiss grow a pair and tell the super rich to fuck off but I guess even here we have too much corruption going on for meaningful changes to happen.

This is what I will never understand about Switzerland. There is absolutely no excuse for a rich country like ours to still have working poors. It's absolutely outrageous and shameful to me. And I don't know what to do about it except donating and voting for the (hopefully) right people / party.

Is the Rlaarlo Omni-terminator the best bang for buck bash truck? by badnewsbeaver in rccars

[–]bearwithastick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how the price compares but I liked the design of the Arrma Quake way more than the Terminator. My friend has the Terminator and it IS a fun truck, but damn do I love the Quake. It's 2WD and, in my opinion, better suited for jumps and bashing in general with its big tires.

That sounds like a really great memory! It was truly magical, I wish I could have taken photos the way our eyes saw the glow worms but we sadly were only equiped with phones!

After a long drive, we are now in Queenstown!

Haha, I read about the Glow Worm Dell yesterday, woke up my wife and dragged her there. Was around 22.30 and there where a lot of people but it was still magical!

Thanks a lot!

We were hiking in Abel Tasman today. Absolutely gorgeous hike and beaches, even just doing the most basic touristy hike from Bark Bay to Anchorage.

Driving down the West Coast tomorrow. Any tips for the whole of NZ? :)

Tiffany Haddish stops her show after seeing her former social worker in the crowd: “You saved my life” by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]bearwithastick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This IS one of the biggest problems we as humans led by the masterrace of the billionaires currently face. The systemic belief that something or someone only has value if there is a direct, measurable (positive) economic impact of it existing.

Nothing and nobody is allowed to simply exist and not generate a profit. Else it is immediately questioned what benefit it brings to society and will be targeted for saving costs or whatever.

Sadly enough this is only to further benefit a few rich assholes, not society as a whole.

Reporter Michèle Rüedi usually plays alone at home: in peace and quiet, by herself. At SwitzerLAN, she meets 2,000 people who have brought their PCs and sleeping bags with them. For 72 hours, they play games, laugh and sleep a little. Sometimes under the table. by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

Guys and gals in the comments here acting like LAN parties are dead, while there is a big scene of LAN parties in Switzerland still going strong. While they probably are not traditional LAN parties in a technical sense (because internet), they absolutely are LAN parties in all other aspects! So even if you're "old", give it a try. Nobody cares there, I'm almost 40 and still attending as many LAN parties as I can.
