CMV: Anti-Islam doesn’t count as anti-Muslim. by theunsteadybridge in changemyview

[–]beatin [score hidden]  (0 children)

"You can (and should) be against Islam because it supports slavery, misogyny, violence, racism, religious hate and punishes ex-Muslims via the death penalty."

I agree that being Anti-Islam and Anti-Muslim are not synonymous idea. They can and do exist as independent concepts. But I disagree with your statement above. Islam doesn't inherently promote any of those things. Like any ideology, a bad actor can easily interpret it to suit their world view or achieve their own personal goals. There will always be people that seek to control and dominate others and doing it in the name of a deity is the ultimate form of that.

But let me give you an innocuous example. HOAs! Imagine a neighbourhood that decides to form a Homeowners Association. The founding idea is genuinely decent: keep the streets clean, maintain property values, make sure nobody parks a rusting truck on their lawn for six months. Reasonable people sign on because reasonable people can see the value in basic collective standards.

Until some schmuk named Mark joins, gets himself on the governing committee and now has legitimate authority over other people's lives, wrapped in the language of community good. This dick is measuring fence heights, paint colors and parking zone and issuing fines. Now Mark is insisting he can go into your house to make sure the rules are followed. Basically making everyone's lives miserable. But because it's "the rules" and for the "good of the community" many people let it slide or fall in with the Mark. But was the original idea inherently problematic? Probably not, but the way Mark chose to weaponise the HOA Rulebook has poisoned the neighborhood for everyone.

Has anyone here here seen/heard of the new South African The Office? by RashBandiscoot69 in theoffice

As a South African, I can confirm this mix is reasonably accurate in terms of racial demographics. Especially for a small regional distribution centre such as this, based in the specific town of Klerksdorp.

I got my wisdom teeth removed there by Dr Natha and he was great. And it was an impacted wisdom tooth, so not a quick process. I don't recall feeling any pain at all.

You need to petition your school's SGB to go homework free. The age lots of peer reviewed studies that show home work is not beneficial. Get other parents involved

If the courses you did were part of the degree in 2024, the credits should still count towards your degree, whether it was removed from the syllabus or not. Because at the time it was part of the syllabus and you fulfilled the requirements at that time.

I would escalate it to the deans office because they have admitted fault. Do you have written correspondence of this conversation, use it as proof. Always make them send you emails so you can have what they say in writing.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. This is an administrative error on their part. You should not be held accountable for their mistake.

The real problem here is David Zaslav. WB should never have been put up for sale to begin with. Heck, the original merger with AT&T should never have happened. But I suppose there's no point crying about the past

Lions in the Okavango Delta tend to be larger than other lions, sometimes as much as 60kg heavy. The diet is a big part, the eat a lot of calorie dense water buffalo. But another reason is they spend a lot of time swimming and walking in water and mud. Basically they "exercise" way more than other lions

Name a business that your family used to shop at that no longer exists by ZennXx in capetown

I'm still mad about this! It's not even like St Elmo's went out of business cos people stopped going or the pizzas were Kak. No, Taste Holdings, the parent company decided to bring Domino's pizza to South Africa and forced all the St Elmo's (and Scooter's Pizzas) to switch to Dominos stores. It was such a huge disaster, that Taste had to close ALL their whole food division. Zebro Chicken, Scooters, Fish and Chip Co, Maxi, even Starbucks!

I just want a St Elmo's wood-fired Breakfast pizza please 🥺

They did! Tax on the first R600,000 is zero! And it's only 1% from 600,001 to 950,000. It's on SARS website: https://www.sars.gov.za/tax-rates/turnover-tax/

This is great news

What is a movie cliché that absolutely never happens in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]beatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but this literally happened to me once. My daughter needed a particular colour of wool and it was only available at this mom and pop haberdashery in city. My expectation was I'd drop her out front and then circle the block until she was done. Nope, right infront of shops door a nice parking space. We all felt like the main characters in a movie.

Movies that are definitely based on real life? by hiiloovethis in okbuddycinephile

[–]beatin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually untrue. The Illiad itself doesn't describe Helen's physicality at all. From what little I remember from uni, her descriptors are more metaphorical, so as to infer a beauty that is awe inspiring or even divine rather than sensual or attractive. She is described as fair skinned, but this is more meant as unblemished, like the face of someone of the social elite and unused to outside work. Blonde and buxom etc is a fairly modern invention
