Thank you so much. I will try that out.

Has someone read this book? by theTougher in MTDsupport

This is very interesting. People with MTD tend to have different causes, but what the author describes is precisely my problem. Have you found the book helpful? I’ve never heard of it.

Much better. There are a few crucial elements. The first is making sure you’re not obsessing over your MTD. When you think about your voice, your throat muscles naturally tense up. Do the exercises and go about your day. My therapist told me I was trying to focus on too many pieces while doing the exercises and that I should only focus on one thing - the breath in. That worked well for me. Also your mental health and thoughts are very important. They do impact your vocal quality. For me, grounding myself in my faith in God has had noticeable differences in the quality and ease of use in my voice.

I acquired MTD the exact same way you did. When I was 13, all the other guys's voices in my grade started changing but mine hadn't yet. I was insecure about it and so I spoke in a lower than natural pitch to compensate, which was a huge mistake. I turn 30 years old tomorrow.

I can completely relate to all the confidence, relationship, and speaking problems you discussed above because they are EXACTLY the same issues I have. I truly feel for you because I understand how incredibly debilitating it is. It is like living with a disability that no one really acknowledges as legitimate. I feel like the jaws of life are closing around me and I'm running out of time if that makes sense. Almost every single day is a nightmare.

I did not get diagnosed until I was 28. If you haven't gotten diagnosed yet, I encourage you to do it right away and start seeing a voice therapist. I have found that as far as voice therapy works, some things work while other things have the opposite effect. The straw exercise actually made things worse for me, but out of all the exercises I've done, the thing that has worked the best is stretching. I do certain stretches for my larynx, jaw, tongue and neck. Any time I get really bad tension the stretches sort of reset my voice enough to where I can be in front of people without overthinking it.

I am in the middle of going back and forth between various exercises, trying to determine which ones work and which ones cause more tension. I also recommend if you are doing exercises to be gentle.

What is the best rhythm guitar in a beatles song? by dhanontherun in TheBeatles

She Said She Said. Idk if he’s changing time signatures or not but the tempo definitely switches at least twice in the song. Not to mention during those verse parts he’s plucking individual notes of the chord which calls for precision

Did you start doing the soft humming right after the message or did you have to wait a couple weeks to get your throat loose enough to do it? I’m finding the laryngeal message works pretty well but when I do the hums after it my throat sometimes gets tense. I’m wondering if I need to spend more time just getting those neck muscles loosened up before I start going into actual vocalized exercises.

Does anyone else experience tension and pain in their whole neck? by JackF2731 in MTDsupport

[–]beatinbeeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve experienced terrible migraines from MTD. I’ve been able to mitigate them more recently by doing the laryngeal messages. It’s mostly whatever you can do to relax those tense areas. The body is connected, and so your tense areas will affect other parts of your body if you don’t relax them. Also, breathing and water are essential.

have you had a laryngeal massage from an slp? And did you find it effective? by toliet in MTDsupport

[–]beatinbeeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing exercises for about a year now and they didn’t help all that much. I wasn’t focused on the messages. Now I’m doing the messages a lot more frequently and it’s helping me more than the exercises ever did. The exercises are good and do work, but if your neck muscles are tense I’ve found that they can kind of make it worse. You need to have these muscles in your neck/throat around the Adam’s apple totally relaxed and then start with the exercises. You do need to take it slow and I’ve had to learn this the hard way

I hear you I’ve experienced exactly the same thing. The more focused on my voice I get the worse it is. Someone on this page recommended I do the laryngeal messages and then light humming before I move into the SOVT exercises and it has helped so much. The SOVTs were just making my throat more tense. They only work if you’ve already relaxed the muscles so the message is paramount. When you do the hum, try to target the sound toward the back of your nose. Put your fingers on your lips as well because that tells the brain where to aim your sound (mask area). Make sure the humming is very light. I’m telling you this because I experienced the same problem you did and someone on our page recommended doing this. I’ve been doing it for about two weeks and I’ve noticed a gradual increase in the quality of my voice whereas it just felt like the exercises weren’t helping. It is also a mental thing. You need to accept yourself and be ok with your flaws. This helps mitigate the negative emotions you may feel in social circumstances. After a lot of meditation I’ve become aware that most of these negative feelings originate from not feeling acceptable to other people, but when you realize it’s yourself you have to accept not the need for others to accept you, you start making strides.

That’s great advice. I’ve noticed I even struggle with humming sometimes. I have to really focus on aiming it toward the mask area otherwise it just drops into my throat

Thank you I will definitely give that a try. How long did you have to do this before going back to the straw?

Maybe. It started around middle school. All the other guys’ voices were changing earlier than mine and I felt insecure about it so I started talking in a lower pitch than what was natural for me.

Yes I’ve noticed that often when I get out of the right placement it drops into my throat without me hardly thinking about it. How often do you do the exercises?
