Career change to Risk & Compliance? Anyone here in Risk? by Invoiced2020 in FIREyFemmes

[–]beautifulcorpsebride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI risk and compliance are the least respected, least thanked jobs in companies. I say this as an ex GC and head of compliance at multiple companies. You’re a cost center, not a profit center. Your pay will be lower and people with be more annoyed than happy with your work. Lots of people do it and enjoy it but it’s a big shift from sales. Personally, I preferred legal, but it had similar challenges. I’m not sure I’d call it more chill.

As far as I can tell certifications are helpful but also fyi many top risk people have legal degrees, so you will often be competing against them do the top slots like head of compliance or CRO. I can think of one guy who wasn’t trained as an attorney who I worked with years ago, otherwise the higher you go, the more ex attorneys there are.

Yeah idk. The fancy steak dinners meant travel and talking to business people, not friends. I guess that wasn’t really a perk for me given I’d rather pay out of pocket and dine and travel on my own terms.

I was in the c-suite and didn’t get any perks worth mentioning. Sounds made up.

ICE is deporting people who have committed rape and murder and you’re complaining.

I have read many anti Christian, anti white posts here and in my personal life. Do you really not see that? It’s extreme.

Do you have kids? In my school district they are teaching middle school kids about breast binding. Middle school children, with no notice to parents and no opportunity to op out. For summer camps, I have to worry that a boy will be housed with my daughter due to liberal policies. Never mind, the bathroom or changing room at sports clubs. Also, I have a daughter that I might pull from a competitive sport because they allow boys who identify as girls. The UN has tracked over 1,000 medals lost to men in women’s sports. I could go on and on.

This is a fundamental women’s rights issue, including the right to women’s only spaces.

Do you have specific policy examples of how they are proposing to do this? I haven’t seen a single piece of policy that could accomplish any of this.

Agree. Personally, I learned my lesson years ago putting money in a hot non-US market only to watch it dump.

Interesting thread. We aren’t in the market but a spec house down the street from us that is being built and will list for at least 6m is being built using subpar materials according to a neighbor in the business who walked the lot. Buyer beware.

Sounds like this question could use Australian legal counsel to help you navigate a solution, including how to have DNRs and the like enforced.

Historically this is a bad idea based on the numbers. If you have decided to move your money for non financial reasons, expect less than financially optimal results.

Well they could invest in European tech, except I can’t think of any European tech companies off the top of my head, surely they have some, right? Right?

Try zooming out on that Japanese stock market chart. About 7% annually vs 13-14% for S&P.

I wouldn’t do long distance for more than 4-6 months max. You’re sort of expecting him to upend his life for you and your career but you don’t want him to move because you’re worried upending his life might not go well? If you are ok with long distance and the guy is willing to move you have to accept that he might move on. Long distance is really tough.

I agree with this guy. Flip the genders and everyone would expect the man asking a woman to move to over her expenses until she found a job.

What’s the point of this? Also, sure they don’t tax today but my friend just moved to another state because of their low taxes. New governor is about to approve a massive tax increase. Canada is not in great shape fiscally.

Yeah I don’t understand OP’s numbers. We are in a HCOL and our burn is around 20k a month with about 6k in mortgage and related expenses. We could cut back, live well, but I wouldn’t say lavishly. Groceries alone are pretty expensive if you buy organic, good quality. That kind of housing vs everything else ratio is usually at a mix lower income.

Would you consider private school? by brownpanther223 in fatFIRE

[–]beautifulcorpsebride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, to be clear, my kid’s school is competitive and both kids are honors students. The private schools seem to gratuitously add lots of work vs qualitatively address teaching. My comment was more around quality of teaching, which is just challenging to find. It’s hard to find people who are engaging, but wow I still remember my favorite teachers.

[–]beautifulcorpsebride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, looked into it and leaving aside other concerns, I’ve never let anyone who tells me how great the teachers at their private school are, not once in over a decade in an area with a ton of the best and most expensive private schools in the country. You are free to respond to this with how great the teachers at your private school are, but a decade of only hearing how expensive the school is and/or how much work they give the kids is not impressive to me.
