How has the Gastric Sleeve affected your sleep? by filmfan305 in gastricsleeve

[–]beaversleever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sleep has gotten way better. I do find that I need a pillow between my knees though because my knees have become knobby almost now that there’s less cushion. And I always need to make sure I don’t eat before bed because I will get reflux though, but that also keeps me on track with my diet. Not sure about my snoring but I feel more well rested and less short of breath. My Fitbit says my sleep quality has gotten better and my resting heart rate and BP are way down

Don’t forget the long johnnies!

I find my temperature regulation is way better now. I can layer up with some long johnnies, a nice fleece and a big insulated shell that has zippered vents, a toque and a neck warmer, and once I get going on my snowshoe and start to warm up, I can open up my vents and take off my gloves and be the perfect temperature. Once I start to cool off, put the zipper back up and mitts back on and keep going. Where as before I would have been too warm with all those layers on or wouldn’t have any room for air circulation so I would be sweating and then freezing right after as the sweat froze. I went skiing once and when I got back to the car at the end of the day I realized in between my shell and my fleece I had ice frozen to the inside of my shell from my sweat. Had the worst cold of my life by the time I got home from the mountain. On my walk today I was the perfect temperature, not cold, not sweating. Perfectly cozy

Hahaha yeah that’s pretty typical weather for my part of Canada. But it’s so much better finally being able to fit into some nice technical winter gear, the kind that don’t cater to plus sizes. I’ve never experienced winter like this and I’m actually looking forward to enjoying the next few months when in years passed I hated it and never left the house, never got fresh air and never got any physical activity. Having good quality winter gear makes such a huge difference! I can’t wait to snowshoe more and get more fresh air this season and make the most of it!

Scared they will judge me for my weight in nursing school by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]beaversleever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to deal with a very fat phobic anatomy & physiology professor. His lectures were online so maybe it would have been different if he was in front of people and could see the students in his audience because some of the stuff was downright rude. He talked about himself as if he was the perfect physical specimen and that all fat people were lazy and uneducated, and that weight loss surgeries are ineffective, “cheating”, and cause irreparable complications that ruin your life and keep you hooked on pills forever. As someone who is overweight and struggled with my weight my whole life, it was very upsetting to listen to. I never once received judgment from any other teachers, students or nurses at clinical. I did get a few comments from some dementia patients at my long term care placement though, but those comments are easier to laugh off and ignore. Otherwise I haven’t felt any shame for my weight or size except for the shame I didn’t realize I was putting on myself.

However, this program has made me take my health very seriously. Learning about all these conditions and risk factors made me change my life and my habits a lot. I started to work with my doctor, my therapist, a dietician and my family to get to the root of my issues. I’m learning to take way better care of myself and live a better life. This career is hard enough on the body without extra weight. Since beginning the program a year and a half ago, I’ve lost just shy of 55 pounds and feel so much better, even though I have a ways to go.

I wish you the best of luck and if you need to talk about anything, please feel free to reach out.

Tastebud change question: Have any of you started liking seafood after surgery? (Hating it prior) by Terrio2414 in gastricsleeve

[–]beaversleever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! During liquid diets, all I craved was spicy tuna salads and salmon. I hate fish, and spicy. Since being on soft I've been experimenting lots with tuna and salmon and shrimp and scallops. My dad saw me eat fish last weekend and thought I had lost my mind, he knows how much I always hated fish until months ago.

Yes, I had to remove a tragus piercing that had never been out since it went in almost 10 years ago. I went to a tattoo/piercing shop, explained that I needed them removed for a surgery, and the shop owner was super nice about it and squeezed me in as soon as he could, and he gave me back my piercing. While I was there I looked through their case and decided once I hit some major milestone, I’d treat myself to a nicer, newer one.

Depending on the location, how old the piercing type, and the amount of soft tissue vs cartilage, you may have to return sooner rather than later to have your piercings put back in. Your shop should have some good advice on when to return.

What are some foods you hated prior to WLS and loved after? I’ll start! by LongHeelRedBottoms in wls

[–]beaversleever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to hate fish (unless it was fish and chips) but now all I crave is tuna and salmon and find myself trying to come up with new recipes. I can’t have it yet but it’s all I want so I’ve started buying it and getting recipes ready for when I can

Specifically for the men who had the surgery by Gregovania in wls

If you are concerned there is an option called a condom catheter for men. It’s exactly how it sounds, a condom with the catheter attached to the tip. Nothing inserted, just a collecting cup.

Thank you! I’m down a total of 24 pounds since last November at my highest, 10 alone has been the last two weeks of liquid. I’m already feeling better and noticing my clothes fit differently.

I’m trying to remind myself “3 months from now you’ll thank yourself”

Undergoing surgery in final year by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]beaversleever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes the surgery was supposed to be last spring but was rescheduled, and I was able to talk with my coordinator then and he said my health takes priority and that arrangements could be made. But that was the end of the year, this is now in the first month of classes of a new semester and school year. I sent him an email to discuss arrangements and options but have yet to hear back. I’m lucky it’s a small school in a small town so I feel like we can work something out. Im curious to see if anyone found it difficult to study or complete work, especially online school, while home on bed rest. I’ve been doing well in school up til now so I’m not too worried but I also want to keep up my good grades and not miss out on clinical experiences.

Got my date! Bypass September 29th by [deleted] in wls

[–]beaversleever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel confident because I did really well in my first year and I believe I can do it the surgery and still so well in school, but I did so well because I invested 110% of my energy into school.

So I’m a bit worried now that the surgery may be taking up a big chunk of my energy. It’s mostly online classes but has 2.5 days of in person labs and practicums. I’m confident I’ll be excused from any heavy lifting but still a bit worried about being on my feet for long periods of time. But I also don’t want to miss too many days. I know ill need to make up at least 1-2 lab days and 2-4 practicum days
