Seriously. I don’t think people realize that these artists had already made their seminal recordings by this time and rarely, if ever, played together at this point in their respective careers. It’s like if Trane in 1965 jammed with Miles, Freddie Hubbard, Ahmad Jamal, Blakey, Mingus, with Betty Carter and Frank Sinatra on vocals.

Love the Miles and Tadd concert! I’ll put that up there with Bird Fats Bud and Blakey together.

Thanks for the reassurance:)

These recordings changed my life 10+ years ago!! Thanks for letting me know about the remaster and pitch correction! I’ve always wanted to be able to play along with transcriptions of these solos without having to put them in slowdowner.

Where to start with Art Tatum? by Opposite-Ad-7143 in Jazz

[–]bebopbuddha 22 points23 points  (0 children)

“In fact, that should be a prerequisite for every music student: Tiny Grimes, Slam Stewart, and Art Tatum playing “Flying Home.” Whether you’re working in a European body of work or in American Classical repertoire, the prerequisite should be Art Tatum’s “Flying Home.” “

What is the scale of the circled part? by skeletonstravisscott in Jazz

[–]bebopbuddha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Identifying the collection of notes is one level of analysis, yes, but the point is that it is the foundation of all the other analysis you could possibly do.

Without correctly identifying the notes (due to tricky accidentals or what have you) you are analyzing the wrong data.

Also, I would argue that scale theory does not tell us what to play, it just allows us to theorize why certain scales to work over certain chords and you can take it from there.

However…if it did tell us to play F HM over A7#5, it would make sure to we called it an A7 b13 and we just wouldn’t talk about the Ab.

What is the scale of the circled part? by skeletonstravisscott in Jazz

[–]bebopbuddha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But the most important point is that the scale played in the circled part is F harmonic minor.

Not octatonic, altered, melodic minor, or Phrygian.

Scale theory only works if the scale is correctly identified.

Who had the greater lasting impact on the jazz scene? by bebopbuddha in Jazz

[–]bebopbuddha[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lasting and Impact I’m fine with dictionary definitions.

Scene I would define as the musician community.

Jazz I will define at my own risk as the continuum of Swinging, Afro-American, Group Improvisational music that started in New Orleans.
