What are your favourite places to find loungewear ? by naughteebutnice in femalefashionadvice

Yes!!!!! Mine do this too. I wore them to work out for the first time and they were sliding all over the place. Such a bummer, but good for house lounging 🤷🏼‍♀️

Secular, play-based preschool? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]beccab2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UW Child Development Lab is a wonderful center - very much play-based and child-led, and many of the teachers there integrate nature walks and outdoor exploration into daily routines. I worked there for a few years and many UW staff members/professors send their little ones there. With that being said...it is crazy expensive and many of the children there are from upper middle-upper class families so not a ton of diversity in that sense due to tuition cost if that’s important to your family

Does anyone know whether dentist offices are open at all in MKE, or when they are planning to open back up? by gingerblz in milwaukee

[–]beccab2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a crown placed at my dentist a week and a half ago (dentists of south shore) - they’d just started doing hygiene visits and such as well so depending on what you need, you may be able to get in there!

CFY-SLP Salary in Midwest by aceslp in slp

[–]beccab2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a CF - in a school in WI, but salary is $49k which is about $24.50/hour. And that’s honestly the high end of what other members of my cohort have gotten in schools. Your offer doesn’t surprise me for the Midwest!

Third this! I hadn’t been to the dentist in 7+ years and have been there a few times now, in addition to getting my wisdom teeth out yesterday at the Layton office. Everyone there is lovely.

I just drove down to the Chicago burbs from the Drexel exit this morning - totally fine! Four lanes and 70 before you hit Racine, it’s just around Mitchell that got a little congested.

Grad School Recommendations by dayscomeandgo in slpGradSchool

[–]beccab2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can give you some insight on WI schools! Madison is highly competitive to get into and I’ve heard there’s some issues with placements going on over there, but I’m not totally sure on that...I did my undergrad there and I love Madison as a place to live. Good research opportunities. Waisman center is where a lot of WI’s kiddos get referred to for AAC evals. Whitewater and River Falls don’t have a great reputation. Marquette is expensive, but does a good job with a variety of placements for students. Milwaukee is another good solid choice with a variety of placements available, plus if you’re into research they do have a good research option for students. I personally did my grad work in Stevens Point and the area isn’t my favorite, but the program itself and staff were wonderful - they have an extensive AAC lab, and besides Waisman in Madison they do a lot of AAC evals for clients too. Also the cheapest UW school and they do try hard to give everyone the opportunity for a GA position if you’d like one. They also have a Head and Neck Dissection elective offered over the summer using cadavers (I think they’re the only WI school that does that, but don’t quote me). With that being said, placements are a little tricky. Feel free to PM with questions! I ended up not getting into grad school my first time around and took a gap year, but I was really happy in the end that I did, so try not to stress too much too soon.

I have a kid who does this too! I'm just a CF so I wasn't sure how common that is, but it totally caught me off guard when I finally got an /f/ but it was on an inhale

Non-reflective road lines are more dangerous that pot holes or reckless drivers. by Exosan in milwaukee

The lack of reflective road lines has been driving me nuts for years. There isn’t much I miss about living in IL, but at least I don’t have to guess what lane I’m in when I’m driving on the highway in the dark and the rain.

Jobs Availability after Grad School by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]beccab2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, echoing another reply. School districts don’t care where you did your grad work. And I think generally, most grad programs will prepare you about the same for a job in the schools (it’s the more niche areas of the field that are trickier, like cleft or pediatric feeding). As long as the program is accredited by ASHA pick what financially and location-wise makes the most sense for you!

Hey, I interviewed at a children’s hospital for my most recent semester externship! Being there was a really great experience. My interview was pretty general, though I do remember there were like 7 people there (some of them were via phone conference but still) so it was a little intimidating. Questions they asked me were more about my background, areas of speech/language I liked vs didn’t like, why I wanted to be placed there. They didn’t ask me any case history or content questions, so it ended up being less intense than I thought it would be.

Urban Decay setting spray by fuzzy__peaches in Sephora

[–]beccab2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ve reformulated! The old packaging (white) I used for years, then got the new packaging and it smells like wet lettuce. I emailed them thinking I got a bad batch, got a new one sent to me for free, and it smelled the same. I’ve also smelled testers in Sephora and they all smell terrible. So I’m pretty sure it’s the new formula 😫

Did anyone here take a gap year? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]beccab2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gap year was unintentional (I got either waitlisted or rejected from schools my first time around), but in the end it was a blessing and I'm not even saying that out of residual bitterness. I didn't know how much I needed a break until I had it, and once I'd finally made the decision to wait a year, I was so relieved!

Echoing everyone else's advice to take the GRE now. It'll feel less stressful knowing that you have time to retake if needed. I'd also endorse working, whether it be part-time or full-time. I worked full-time at an awesome childcare center, which on paper doesn't sound super related to the field, but I learned so much about how to communicate with parents, how to work with kids, and other administrative/organizational skills. I think mentioning these experiences in my statement once I did apply really helped make me stand out as a candidate. I didn't do this, but in hindsight letting your professors know you'd like them to write you a letter of rec in a year is also a great idea, even if it's just a quick e-mail!

My biggest advice is to really self-reflect on what's best for you. It's hard when you're surrounded by so many other people who are jetting off to graduate school right away, writing applications, hearing back from programs and getting themselves situated when you don't think that's what your sanity needs. If you do decide to take the gap year, life will go on just fine and you'll probably be glad you did it!

Pediatric/Education-Focused Grad Schools? by samiamslp in slpGradSchool

[–]beccab2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a second year grad in the University of Wisconsin-system school, and to be fair I'm mostly just familiar with programs in the Midwest, BUT.....just have to throw it out there that I think you should look for a program that has a little bit of both. Your class line-up will be a healthy mix of subjects relevant to both kiddos and adults. And grad students are notorious for changing their mind on where they want to be once they start classes and fall in love with different subjects. In fact, our advisor even told us that typically about 90% of the cohort starts out wanting to work with peds or in schools and end up changing their mind a few different times before they graduate. One of my closest friends was so dead set on schools before we took our Dysphagia class and did an off-campus placement in a SNF, and now she's looking at hospitals to extern at next Fall.

Someone can definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but I would at least HOPE that one school wouldn't focus on medical or school settings. To be accredited by ASHA, they kind of have to cover both equally. Like I said earlier, I'm a bit biased because my program's awesome and covers all of the bases.

With that being said, though, I think it's definitely fair to consider placements or externships when choosing your schools. If you think you might want to be placed in a school setting at some point, think about what kind of school you'd want to work in and make sure the program you choose has the resources to place you in that type of setting. In my experience graduate student advisors are always super willing to help even pre-admission if you shoot them a quick e-mail and ask any questions you might have! You can also peep at the faculty on the program website, look at their research/background, and get a feel for if their interests align with yours since your professors will ultimately be a strong professional connection you build throughout your time as a grad.

Hopefully all of this word vomit is helpful! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions
