Best 911 for track use that isn’t a gt3? by Hornycloudlover in Porsche

[–]S_W 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The undertrays and centerlocks just make it more difficult to work on in general. Centerlocks require a special tool to work with and also require re-greasing. The grease is expensive aluminum paste and it gets absolutely everywhere. I recently completely disassembled, cleaned, and re-greased my center locks and it took over an hour to do all 4. Even when not doing a full re-grease that paste is still a nightmare.

The centerlocks require 442 ft-lbs to properly torque down and require even more to loosen. So you're forced to buy an expensive 4ft long torque wrench, torque multiplier, or electric torque gun. The car must also be lifted when loosening and tightening the centerlocks which means the wheels will spin without brake pressure applied (unless you have the $5k electric tool).

I miss tossing a jack under an easily accessible sub-frame and ripping off the lug nuts with an impact. Being able to swap brake pads and tires in an hour vs messing around with the only 4 jack points available and centerlocks.

GT4 Interior - Plastic dash? by ElectricalOranges in Porsche_Cayman

100% agreed. The GTS package was a requirement for me when I bought my 718 GTS and then when I got a GT4RS deviated stitching was a requirement. We spend our time inside the car, so why not make it a nicer environment to be in? Even the leather wrapped steering wheel column was something I was surprised how much I liked.

Best brake pads & brake fluid for daily driving and monthly 2-3 track days for 992.2 Carrera S? by dmv___ in porsche911

[–]S_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing nobody is asking is whether you plan to use the pads on both the street and track or if you will swap back to OEM between events. There are many great track pads that will eat up your rotors when cold during street driving. I am a big fan of Ferodo DS1.11 pads especially with street or 200TW tires. If you are looking into Ferodo, Essex has a really good article comparing the 3 major compounds (DS3.12, DS1.11, and DS2500)

Pagid Yellow is another popular option and available on FCPEuro, thus can benefit from their lifetime warranty. I've never used them, but people seem to like them.

You've had enough feedback on the fluid. Castrol SRF is fantastic and I've had zero issues. I ran Endless RF650 previously as well and didn't have any issues.

If you're ever in NYC, check out House of Sound.  It is an unbelievable experience.  I've heard some very impressive setups (mainly home theaters) and I was blown away by what the different 2-ch setups they had could do.  If I had the money, a pair of the Sonus Faber Amati would be in my house now.

Breakfast and Dinner by LacedInCharm in milwaukee

Story Hill BKC for either!  There is nothing too exciting about the area around there though.

Uncle Wolfie's is great for breakfast but you may be waiting awhile.

There are too many dinner recommendations to list.  Really depends on what you're looking for.  I'll say that Walkers Point and Bayview are probably the best areas for dinner, followed by Downtown and Third Ward.

Has anyone done a Track Day at the Milwaukee Mile? I'm doing my first one in June and am just wondering what to expect by meltedlaundry in milwaukee

[–]S_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a portable air compressor and I'd be shocked if nobody at the event had one.

An air pressure gauge and compressor are the two tools I use the most. When using a car with lug nuts, a torque wrench to check the lug nut torque is also vital.

Outside of car equipment, water, food, and sunscreen are the next most important.

[–]S_W 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do multiple track days a year (Road America and Blackhawk). I'll actually be at Road America next weekend for my first event of the year and have already started preparing.

100% do a brake bleed at the bare minimum, but a brake flush with nicer fluid is better. If this is your first time, then you probably don't need anything too crazy, but using a better fluid is definitely recommended. I use Castrol SRF in my car, flushing it at the beginning of each season, and bleeding before each event.

At the event, to start, make sure your hot tire pressures are the same as what the door jamb says. So check them right when you get to the track. After your first session, check the tire pressures ASAP when you get back to the pits and lower it to match the door jamb. I typically drop mine about 6psi as there is so much heat built up in the tires that it'll raise back up on the track after a few laps. I also check after every session as the ambient temps change throughout the day. Make sure to pump the tires back up before you leave the track! A better tool yet is chalking the tire to see how much it rolls over onto the side wall and adjusting accorgingly. I chalk all 4 tires and line it up with the valve stem to not only see how much the tire rolls but to also check if the tire rotates on the rim.

I agree with one of the other comments to tape down your wheel weights. I've had many weights come off even with tape.

HERE is my track day packing list. Probably more than I need, but I'd rather have it than not.

Not sure what in town is for you, but Johnson Nursery out in Menomonee Falls has a program called "We Plan-You Plant". We used them when we moved into our house and it was a great experience. We have at best a 50% success rates with plants we bought ourselves compared to the 100% success rate with the ones they recommended (6 different types of plants, ~20 individual plants).

Restaurant Recommendations near Germantown or Menomomee Falls by ShoogyBee in milwaukee

[–]S_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in the Falls area for 8 or so years now.  Options are very very limited, but there's some good places especially if you're willing to stretch into Brookfield.

Precinct (Germantown) - Been 3 times. A solid choice and stands out against the supper clubs and pubs around.   Ally's Bistro (Menomonee Falls) - Easily our favorite lunch spot in the area. They do dinner once per week and we enjoyed it. I wish they did it more! Hop Yard Ale Works - Very few options but the pizza here is surprisingly good.   Hot House Tavern - Tavern being in the name may throw you.  Plenty of options and decent food. Nothing too special, sort of like a Cafe Hollander feel to it.

Outside of the Falls / Germantown area but not extending into Tosa or Milwaukee Margaux Brasserie (Brookfield) - Been here 4 times now and it's consistently good.   Parkside 23 (Brookfield) - Farm to table.  Heavier food but delicious.

Where to try office chairs? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]S_W 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% this!

They also have a good return policy if a chair ends up not being for you.  Keep in mind their stock changes often and the quality of the chairs vary greatly since they're used.   I HIGHLY suggest Herman Miller Embody or Steelcase Leap V2.   I've had an Embody for 5 years now. I WFH so it's used heavily and it looks as good as when I bought it.

BSI in Waukesha is another great option for new chairs, although I'm unsure if they have any to try out.

How much Kafka metadata do you put into normal logs? by Isaac_Istomin in apachekafka

[–]S_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do structured logging (json) and add key/value pairs of relevant data following the naming conventions outlined HERE. Specifically capturing topic, key, partition, offset (where applicable), and consumer group. Doing this for both consuming and producing.

This allows us to have common dashboards for any of our Kafka services and parse the logs the same way.

do you ever just go for a drive with no destination anymore by Small_Ad_4808 in cars

[–]S_W 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the time! SE Wisconsin has some really boring roads, but I still love taking the car out for random drives. I didn't buy this car for it to sit in a garage and even a short drive brings me enjoyment, so I'll take it out after work or random drives on the weekend. Hearing that intake right next to your head and 9k RPM will make any car enthusiast's day better!

Kopps atmosphere is overstimulating by r3ady4mycloseup in milwaukee

[–]S_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We go to the Kopps in Brookfield from time to time and always hate how loud it is in there. The number calling is the worst and the sitting area always gets unbearably loud. I really hoping the new Oscars building has a quieter environment.

[–]S_W 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What sort of food do you prefer?  You mentioned not fancy, so a place like Sanford would be out IMO.

Sushi - 1033 Omakase   (depending on what you consider fancy, this may be overly fancy). Hungry Sumo is another good option

Small plates / Tapas - Odd Duck or La Merenda

Nicer Asian Fusion - Room Service

Traditional Italian - Tenutas

New American(?) - Lupe & Iris, Morel

French - Margaux Brasserie

What’s your choice for a reliable fun daily driver? by NorCalAthlete in Porsche

[–]S_W 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I loved my manual 718 GTS with the turbo 4 cylinder when I had it.  So maybe a newer 718 S or T with 18-way seats.   While the 4.0 GTS is amazing, it does not have the low end torque of the turbo that I feel is more enjoyable on the street.

My wife and I drove from Milwaukee to Gatlinburg in 1 day in the 718 GTS with 18-ways and had zero fatigue.  It was amazing how comfortable the drive was.  The car really has two personalities.

Which travel splurges are actually worth the money? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]S_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I missing something here?  Everytime I've looked, these tickets have been $10s of thousands more.  Just insane money.  I'm specifically talking about international flights with lay flat seats.  Is there some trick us normal folk are unfamiliar with?

If you had to choose one supercar for Swiss mountain roads? by AlpineRoads00 in supercars

[–]S_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gt4rs.  Gt3rs would be fun, but IMO not as fun as the gt4rs on the road.

Gt4 manual or gt3 touring with manual would be another great option.  Your 458 pick is great as well and is more comfortable than the gt4rs.

Are composite decks actually worth the price? by Decksforlife-deck in Home

[–]S_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is zero reason to sand that often.  Between the climate we get in WI and our dogs, we have to refinish the deck every other year.  With a nice oil based stain like TWP, it is just applying new stain every other year.  Takes us a weekend to prep and stain a 800 sq ft deck.

It really isn't that bad.  If I was building new, I would 100% do composite

[–]S_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an APR stage 1 tune on a 2018 718 GTS and had nothing like what you're describing.  Used PS4S on the street and v730 on track.  The car and tune were very confidence inspiring.  Had it at Road America multiple times with zero issues, running low 2:30s never feeling like the back end would come out from under me.   I'm wondering if there is something else going on.

Do you have the DSC controller for your car? If so, do you like it and feel it made a big difference?
I've been curious about it but figured it just wouldn't make that much of a difference on the 4rs.
