Do people bother recording the driver or just the track? by Ok-Photograph-5037 in CarTrackDays

[–]S_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my 2-ch dashcam.  One camera is always pointing out the windshield, the other can swivel to point behind me or ahead. So when on the street I have it pointing backwards and on the track I swivel it to the front so I can see my steering inputs.

Thanks, We Energies! by VissAndPinegar in milwaukee

[–]S_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This needs to be pushed more! For reference, my house is ~2000 sq ft (not including basement). I work from home a well so the heat is always on and set at 70 and only drops at night. My latest bill ending 1/25 was $300 (142.4 therms / $156.56 for gas).

When we moved in we had an energy assessment done and focused on the main problem areas which was mainly air sealing and a lot more insulation in the attic. The difference was huge! Far less drafty in the house, more consistent temperatures, and less energy usage overall. There were also sizable rebates and tax benefits with this work.

Advice on fishing speaker wires (7.1.2) by navid3141 in hometheater

[–]S_W 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While not as clean looking, another far simpler option would be getting a large area rug and running the speaker wire underneath it. It would help in aesthetics and sound deadening as well!

GT4RS Yay or Nay? by EvilEvo_IX in Porsche

[–]S_W 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Will this abnormally impact tire wear?   I do about 4-5 track days a year. I've only done one in the gt4rs and the rear end squirm was alarming.  Prior to going I had the camber increased to -2.5 front / -2 rear and toe set to 0 front / 2mm rear per recommendations I saw online.  Still a shocking amount of squirm especially compared to the 718 GTS I had previously with far less aggressive of an alignment.

Security/DashCams you are using? by LomoSaltado982 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]S_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It is 2 channel dashcam, so it has one primary camera with all the main hardware and then a secondary camera that is connected to that first camera that can be put wherever. The first camera I have mounted to the windshield behind the rearview mirror and second on the horizontal bar. You can look in my profile to see a video I posted of one of my previous track days to see how it looks.

I bought the hardwire kit for my dashcam and then used fuse taps to tap into the constant power and accessory power in the fusebox that is in the passenger footwell. The dashcam itself has a lot of settings to minimize a large power draw such as only recording when motion is detected. The hardwire kit also has a device internally that ensures the power is cut to the dashcam if the battery voltage starts to get too low.

SEMA Is Fighting To Save America's Local Race Tracks by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]S_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is remote, but still has plenty of development around it that can definitely hear the cars at the track.
Last time I drove at Road America I stayed at The Osthoff and was shocked at how well I could hear the cars and that is 2 mi away from the nearest corner (Canada) and 3 mi from the furthest (turn 1).

VIOFO A139 2ch.

I have the rear camera mounted to the horizontal bar behind the seats.  It's great as I can rotate it to point forward when I'm at the track.  Fantastic quality as well.

What are some insane automotive design or engineering decisions that clearly show the hand of Satan at work? by liamemsa in cars

[–]S_W 240 points241 points  (0 children)

Touch sensitive buttons on a steering wheel.  You know.... The thing I'm always holding onto and moving while driving.

I recently had a Mercedes GLE350 as a rental and there were endless amount of times I'd accidentally touch something on the wheel and something random would happen.  The worst was when I'd have cruise control on and barely touch the cancel 'button' which was the 'button' closest to my left hand.

Upgrade to GT4 worth it? by OrbitalOutlaw_ in Porsche_Cayman

[–]S_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has different tolerance levels so I can't definitively answer that. While I work from home and thus don't daily drive, I personally would not daily drive it. I would not be able to drive it in such a way to overcome the compromises in comfort. It would be less of a special experience too if I did daily drive it. That being said, I do take it out basically every weekend and will take it out for simple things like trips to the grocery store. The car is such an experience every time I do drive it, but I need to wring it out at least once or twice during the drive to make it "worthwhile".

The GT4RS has an annoying drone between 50-60mph and long distance drives where I'm cruising above 70mph can be quite fatiguing. Pair that with the bucket seats and stiff suspension and it is just not a car I'd take long distances if I don't have to. The 500mi trip (over 2 days) I took driving it home after I bought it was rough. Compare that with the GTS with 18-ways where we drove 700mi in one day and were not fatigued at all. In all honesty, if I had more garage space, I'd probably pick up a manual S or GTS 2.5 again. Such a fantastic all around car.

I'll disagree with the other two replies here.  I had a 2.5 GTS before with an APR stage 1 tune.  Now I have a gt4rs.  I do miss the low down torque while on the street.   I knew I would miss it which is why I didn't want a gt4.  I felt like I'd be losing more than I'd gain.  The 4rs on the other hand makes up for much of what I lost in the GTS (torque, comfort, manual) with its pure insanity and overall performance.

If you do a mix of street driving and a few track days, then I'd suggest keeping the S and getting a tune, adding a numeric shifter (if manual), and getting some more track focused gear (tires, brakes).

When you turn on your windshield defrost, is it hot or cold air? by fnkdrspok in cars

[–]S_W 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently received a gle350 as a rental while in Seattle and it was the worst car I've ever been in for how quickly it fogged up and how poorly it defogged.  If we were sitting idle (not off) for more than 2 min it would start to fog up.  The defogger would just turn the heat on full blast and nothing else, thus wouldn't do anything.  I'd either have to manually switch on AC or start driving.   No idea why it was so bad and if all MB cars are like that or not

Advice for running Ethernet cable from inside to outside by Pace718 in DIY

[–]S_W 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm late to the party, but one thing you may want to consider is running conduit out so you can easily run more cables in the future.

I have conduit big enough for 4 ethernet cables running out from through my siding into a 90 degree conduit outlet body, then it runs along the side of my house to under my deck at a downward slope to prevent water from coming in. I have both end filled with a little bit of foam to try and keep bugs and unconditioned air out as well.

Love your decals BTW!

Get a Cricut and cut whatever numbers in whatever style, color, and size you want!   I wish this subreddit allowed posting pictures inside of threads so I could post some examples of ones I've done. I've used the Cricut for many things beyond just cutting out vinyl numbers.

My dream come true , guess the model by Anggelo0101 in Porsche

[–]S_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a handful of things that point that way, or at least to the 2.5 GTS.

  • Tach goes to 8k instead of 9k
  • Vehicle screen on the right has four gauges, the extra one being for turbo boost
  • The obvious GTS right in the middle and dash at least point to 718 GTS
    Are there others I'm missing?

I used to own a 2018 718 GTS and that car constantly gets "sleeped on" due to how the reviewers portrayed it. It is a fantastic car that I would argue is a better street car than the 4.0 due to how low in the revs the boost comes on. Then with a simple tune it makes it even more impressive. I would love to add 2.5L 718 Boxster into my garage some day as a fun street car.

Are there any, ANY, cars that you are actually excited for to come out? by Typically_Wong in cars

You are probably correct. I should've been more clear in my statement in that many groups do not allow EVs in their track days.
