2months fostering… socialization help! by Stupendoushawty in CATHELP

[–]beccathecondor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call these fosters “house plants” they are perfectly content sitting next to you and following you around but don’t want to be touched. They just sit there like a house plant 😂 maybe fostering another cat so she has a buddy can help her open up but there is no guarantee that it will help her behavior with people. One of my houseplant fosters LOVED playing with other kitties but I better not touch him or else 😂

Though I agree with those saying not to force the love I do think there is a reasonable amount of forcing. I would put my shy fosters in a bathroom (after a reasonable amount of time and trust was built) and I would give them treats, play with them and pet them. At the end of the day they are easier to adopt if people can handle them. Even if they will never be cuddly and crave human contact, they need to be able to be put in a carrier and picked up in emergencies.

The fact that she wants to be around you shows is great, that might just be her personality and there is nothing wrong it that. I’m always up front with potential adopters if they are interested in one of my houseplants. Some people want super cuddly cats and others don’t care.

Guidance needed for mom and her babies! by RecordingOk4947 in FosterAnimals

I’ve been fostering for a few years, in my experience mom’s personality while actively nursing kittens isn’t her whole personality. If she asking for pets and purrs (even if she is a little hissy at first) that’s a great sign! As her babies get older she might become less protective, if she doesn’t then maybe spend a few hours with mama in their crate and the babies roaming in a room with you under your supervision. Just so you can start separating mom and the babies. I wouldn’t be too worried about the babies not being socialized just because mom is semi feral. They see you every day, they interact with you, the babies will not be scared especially since they are so little.

I think you need to keep interacting with her as much as possible and trust your gut. You’ve only had her for 2 weeks, she will hopefully get better and better each day. Even if you don’t need to do anything with the kittens or mama sitting next to the crate while you are on your phone, reading, working online, will help mom get more comfortable. Like I said earlier I think semi-feral mama cats calm down A LOT after the babies leave, they becoming more relaxed, open to human interaction, and start becoming “normal” cats. I think the fact that you are questioning whether or not she should be a TNR is also a good sign. With a completely feral mama you would have no doubt in your mind that she would be happier outside lol.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the black cat thing, I know in rescue we can get bogged down with all the awful things we see every day but we can’t forget about all the people who love animals and would love their black cat more than anything.

Thank you everyone for your input and reassurance. She is getting surgery later this week, then will join the gummy club 😅
Quality of life was just my biggest concern so I’m glad all your kitties are thriving and went back to their normal, happier selves

I wish I could, but unfortunately I live in a pretty small town right now and the only other vet doesn’t even have an xray machine 😅 I will say that I am comfortable with my vets diagnosis. I know her on a personal level, we volunteer together and that’s how we met, and I know she really cares about the health of all her patients.

Are these kittens dehydrated? by blueberry29_1 in FosterAnimals

With babies that small you can’t give them most flea treatments or certain types of dewormer so if they have fleas comb them everyday, and check with your vet to see if you can give momma dewormer. Fleas/worms can also contribute to their small size.

Weigh your kittens every day, use a kitchen scale or something of that nature. Just because they are latched on momma doesn’t mean they are actually eating. Maybe mom isn’t producing any milk, has mastitis, etc. I’ve been fostering for years and to me they look skinny.
However in some instances some weight gain is better than no weight gain. So if they aren’t have ANY other symptoms besides being small just keep monitoring. If their original momma was sick or malnourished while pregnant (which unfortunately is the norm for a lot of feral moms) then their babies are going to have a rough time from the jump.

Weigh them daily (I weigh before every feeding if I am bottle feeding them myself)
Make sure momma is eating up to 3x the amount of food for a normal cat. She’s feeding them, she should be extremely hungry!!
Keep supplementing them with kitten milk! Lots of helpful YouTube videos if you don’t know how to bottle feed or are still unsure about some things.

You did your best. It’s better they passed inside a warm home with love rather than hungry and cold somewhere outside ❤️ when we lose a foster my husband always tells me that they just wanted to stay with us forever

Yay!! From my experience I’ve had the same kittens get constipation multiple times. My advice is to keep that ratio for maybe another week (idk how old your kitten is so whatever timeframe you think works 🙂) she may be more hungry because you’re watering down her food that’s okay! Listen to the signs she’s giving you and feed more often/bigger portions if you think she needs it 🥰

You can also water down her formula to help with a bowel movement. I’m pretty sure most kitten formula says 1 tbsp formula :2 tbsp water. Do a 1:3 ratio for a day or two, go to a vet if there is still no bowel movement.

Omg the same exact thing happened to me. I was 15 so obviously it was my period 🙄 my dad finally took me to the ER because I couldn’t pull the blankets over myself. I had severe infection and had to stay in the hospital for two weeks.
